15may_MadhavanIntrvw-TWMR02Bollywood never ceases to surprise. Just when one had started losing hope in some good content being in the offering that would find widespread audience, back to back successes of Gabbar Is Back and Piku infused some life in the industry. Then when there was a huge dip with Bombay Velvet, there came Tanu Weds Manu Returns which literally took the narration by storm. This was evident with huge jumps that the film took over the weekend after a very good Friday.

However, the big moments were reserved for the weekdays. With Monday being bigger than Friday and Tuesday almost equal to Friday, Aanand L. Rai proved that the weekdays always belong to the director. Such has been the acceptance of this Kangna-Madhavan starrer that the film has now netted – hold your breath – 70 crore in its first week. Not just is it the best of the year so far, it is also comparable to some of the biggest money spinners that Top 5 stars have managed over the last few years. Also, if someone would have mentioned before the release of Tanu Weds Manu Returns that this sequel to Tanu Weds Manu (lifetime total 40 crore) would earn 70 crore in its lifetime, no one would have really minded that. However to get that in one week flat is huge indeed.

The film is now heading for a Blockbuster status and while 100 crore is a given, the next target that the film is approaching is 125 crore. This is now huge by all standards and what makes it further special is the fact that Eros has scored a hattrick is successes with Tanu Weds Manu Returns after Badlapur and NH10. It is the only production house to have achieved this remarkable feat this year and that too with unconventional subjects and treatment. While their next biggie is Bajrangi Bhaijaan, one awaits more unique and commercially viable films from the corporate giant.

Meanwhile, Piku managed to collect well when in its third week and has now netted around 75 crore. It could have managed at least 3 crore more if not for Tanu Weds Manu Returns wave, but still is good nonetheless. It is a Superhit though and all eyes are now on how close it reaches the 80 crore mark.
