The much awaited film Noukadaubi by multiple national award winning director and master craftsman of our time, Rituparno Ghosh is slated to have a momentous release date.

Film maker Subhash Ghai, as a tribute to Rabindranath Tagore 150th anniversary will be releasing the multi-lingual film on May 06, since the film is based on his work. After giving beautiful gems like Iqbal and Joggers’ Park, Ghai with his Mukta Searchlight Films, wants to take good Bengali cinema on a global scale.

The magic and imagery of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s words will once again cast a spell over the audience when his Noukadaubi, a tale of four cross-wired lovers, gets a mainstream makeover in director Rituparno Ghosh’s film by the same name. The film will be released both in Bengali and Hindi.

Noukadubi will gain much attention for its content that was considered rather broadminded and progressive during Tagore’s time. All these years later, the film will be a mainstream progressive Bollywood-style story from ‘Galpa Cuccha’ (Collection of Stories published in 1912).

Says producer Subhash Ghai, “It’s an honour to be associated with this film which lends itself so beautifully with the legends work. We have also decided to dub it into Hindi. We showed the film to Gulzaar Saab, and he loved it. He would be doing the translation of the lyrics of the songs for the mainstream Hindi speaking audience, but there will be no change in the orchestra track or the tune in the original, to retain the sanctity and essence of the film. Also since May 07, is Tagore 150th birth anniversary, we felt it would be the best way to pay our tribute, since the film is based on his work”

Adds director Rituparno Ghosh, “The idea of making a film on Nouka Dubi germinated while we were shooting for Abohoman. I would discuss with Titoda (Dipankar De) if there’s any place for Bengali literature in popular cinema because there’s a tendency to classify any literature-based film as an art film. Noukadubi has to be seen from the point of that period’s conventional morality. Chastity plays a major role in the film. Morality is very important. A new bride who has lived with another man over a period of time returns to her husband.
I felt Noukadubi has all the ingredients of a mainstream, rather popular, film. It’s basically a tale of wife-swapping – a couple is separated and there’s a lot of melodrama. Noukadubi won’t have the complicated narrative of Chokher Bali.”

The film produced by Subhash Ghai’s Mukta Searchlight stars well known Bengali superstars Prosenjit Chatterjee, Jisshu Sengupta, Raima Sen and Riya Sen.
