Aamir Khan, whose last 2 ventures 3 Idiots and Peepli Live have been major hits at the box office, stated that Indian Cinema is continuously evolving and there is a demand for diverse content.
Peepli Live, which is a satire on farmer suicides, performed handsomely in the domestic and international circuit. The actor asserted that films like Taare Zameen Par and Peepli Live would never have worked a decade ago, pointing to the fact that the Indian audience is gradually warming up to the mature and intellectual genre of cinema.
He went on to state that while Peepli Live had a specific message, Dhobi Ghat didn’t have any social message and the plot revolved around four characters in the city of Mumbai with the fifth character played by the city itself.
On being queried about what attracts him to scripts, and that whatever he touches seems to turn into gold at the box office, the actor replied that it’s basically an instinctive reaction to the narration. He listens to the script from the audience’s point of view, and if it strikes the right emotional chords, he approves it. Aamir is known to not show any emotion while the script narration is going on, leading to a lot of nervousness for debutant directors such as Abbas Tyrewala and Anusha Rizvi.
He also shared his learning experiences on films like Sarfarosh and especially Taare Zameen Par, wherein there were a lot of policy changes in the education system post the release of the movie. The teaching fraternity heaped a lot of praises on the movie as well.
Aamir signed off by saying that the unique aspect of cinema, making people cry, think, and touch lives, is what makes it so fascinating for him as an actor.
