Returning from her Panvel farmhouse to Bandra, Rakhee Gulzar, married to the Oscar-winning lyricist, discovered that she had been burgled and about 7 lakhs of gold jewellery was missing. The lock on the front door had been smashed. “Preliminary investigations suggest that the robber entered the house after breaking the lock on the main door,” said Prakash George, senior police inspector, with amazing perspicuity. “I have worked here for the last three months on the day shift,” explained Amit Patel, security guard aged 19, “ I did not see anyone enter the building.”

Top 70s actress, Rakhee was born in West Bengal in what is now Bangladesh, and had a string of hits in her career including Tapasya, for which she won a Best Actress Award. She was also a prominent leading lady for Amitabh in the late 70s appearing opposite him in no less than eight movies including Kabhie Kabhie, Muqaddar ka Sikander, Jurmana and Kaala Patthar.

Rakhee’s farmhouse is not just a hobby to her. She is keenly interested in agriculture and is particularly concerned at the falling water table in some areas of India. “It’s an interest I inherited from my father,” she explained, “I’ve been reading up a lot on how to improve cultivation in areas that have scarcity of water. I keep travelling to universities to learn about the latest techniques.”
