The female lead for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming film Ram Leela has been in discussion for a few weeks but now it has been reported that Deepika Padukone is set to take on the role.

Kareena Kapoor was originally set to play the role of Juliet but Sanjay Leela Bhansali reportedly wanted an ‘unmarried’ actress to play the role.  Katrina Kaif was also approached for the role but was busy with her schedule.  Most recently the costume designer of the film Anju Modi reported that Priyanka Chopra had been finalised for the role.

Now however a source close to the film told the media, “Bhansali wanted an A list heroine to play Leela. He approached Katrina but she did not have dates. Deepika was the only one with available dates for the project. Bhansali was only too happy to have her.”

The source went on to confirm to the media that Deepika Padukone has ‘signed on the dotted lines” recently after Bhansali had approached her ’25 days back,’ and although he was considering having a ‘fresh face’ he was ‘happy to have Deepika on board.’

Ram Leela is based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and will see Ranveer Singh act opposite Deepika Padukone. The film is set to release in 2013.
