About the film
Set in the Darjeeling and Calcutta of the 70s, Barfi! is the story of three young people who learn that love can neither be defined nor contained by society’s norms of normal and abnormal. Barfi, a hearing and speech impaired boy falls in love with the beautiful, ethereal Shruti. Worlds collide. And in spite of her deep affection for Barfi, Shruti gives in to societal and parental pressure to marry a ‘normal man’ and lead a ‘normal life’. Many years later, their paths cross once again when Barfi, on the run from the police, is in search of Jhilmil, a mentally challenged girl who he grew up with. Caught in a cat and mouse game, in the search for the girl Barfi loves, Shruti realizes that she herself is still in love with him. She must now choose between her happiness and his. Will the search for Jhilmil lead Shruti and Barfi to reclaim their love or has Shruti lost her one chance at true happiness forever? Barfi is an uplifting story about human frailty. About impossible relationships. Unspoken words. And love.
