Soha Ali Khan is known for her bookish ambitions. She recently attended the book launch of Ashish Jaiwal’s book True Dummy, about the conflicts and resolutions of modern youth in India. Heavy stuff, though apparently a great read. But what does Soha like to read when she just wants to unwind? “I have loves reading thrillers and murder mysteries ever since I was a child, ” she says, “I have always had a desire for suspense. I am a big Sherlock Holmes fan. In fact I have read all of the Sherlock Holmes series.”

Clearly well-educated and serious, there is also a lighter side to Soha and she wants to express this through her work. She has recently been working on the comedy Dhoondte Reh Jaaoge with Zayed Khan. The Nawab’s daughter is also involved in the multi-starrer Mumbai Cutting alongside Sonali Kulkarni, Reema Sen and Tara Sharma – as well as the interestingly plotted 99 along with Kunal Khemu and Boman Irani.

But perhaps the most interesting project of all of Soha’s upcoming plans is Cheers in which she plays her mother, actress Sharmila Tagore and Abhay Deol plays legendary actor Dharmendra. In a fascinating piece of casting, both Sharmila and Dharmendra will play themselves in current times. Director Sangeeth Sivan explains his vision, “It is essentially about the relationship between a father and son,” he says, “The two, who are not the best of friends, travel together and it is during this journey that they rediscover each other and have an opportunity to realise their mistakes and get back together. Despite the emotional subject, the film’s mood is humorous.”
