BollySpice Choice Awards 2009 – Winners List!
Awards created by the people, for the people!

2008 was a year to reckon with, where while some movies burst the skies; others could not even get up from the ground. Last year brought us many movies that invoked deep thoughts and feelings such as A Wednesday!, Ghajini, Fashion and Rock On!! However, fortunately with the movies that involved us using our brains, there were also movies that could be enjoyed just for the viewing pleasure of it all such as Jaane tu Ya Jaane Na, Dostana and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. There was drama, comedy, tragedy, action and sometimes just plain bakwaas (need I remind you of a movie named‚ Karzzzz). Choosing a winner between these tremendously splendid films was not an easy task for the BollySpice Community.

Be it New York or New Delhi, Sydney or Sweden, BollySpice Members and readers encompass the whole world. Every year, BollySpice.com readers and forum members decide which films and stars take the honor for their grand work. After the overwhelming work of days and nights, our members put together a list of nominations with the help of our panel of judges. The list was based on the quality of the films and their success at the box office. These nominations were then put forward in online polls on our forum. Around five thousand votes were collected in a time span of three weeks and the winners are being declared today.

Without further ado, here is the list of winners of Bollyspice Choice Awards 2009!

Best Director

Ashutosh Gowariker – Jodhaa Akbar

Like Star Screen Awards, Ashutosh bagged the Best Director award here too; however he was very closely followed by his colleague AR Muragadoss, director of Ghajini.

Best Film

Fashion AND Jodhaa Akbar

Boy oh boy, a tie between the biggest movies of the year followed again very closely by Ghajini!

Mr. Ram Mirchandani of UTV was ecstatic at Fashion’s win:

“As producers we are very happy and excited! What is also very heartening is we are sharing the award with a film like Jodhaa-Akbar, which is a mind-blowing film. All the three actresses deserve their awards. They’ve worked so hard over the 100 days of the shoot! It is tremendous I think it is very nice for them to be richly awarded for their hard work.”

He added, “ It’s not very often that a woman oriented film does so well…so it’s very heartening! In Hollywood you have people like Cameron Diaz, Julie Roberts carrying movies on their shoulders but in India it does not happen that way. India is a predominantly male role dominated market so I would think that in that sense Fashion is one of the first movies that has done so well at the box office as well as the awards platform in which we have a woman as the hero of the film. That is a trend we have set with Fashion and I think that it makes it even more exciting that all the awards have been swept by the ladies in the film. This is a way forward and we here at UTV are now looking at quite a few projects that have female protagonists as the lead.”

Best Actor

Aamir Khan – Ghajini

Aamir Khan won this award very comfortably with Hrithik Roshan a little ways behind him for Jodhaa Akbar.

Best Actress

Priyanka Chopra – Fashion

Priyanka like Aamir had no trouble in getting this award; she was followed by Hrithik’s costar Aishwarya Rai for Jodhaa Akbar.

Best Supporting Actor

Arjun Rampal – Rock On!!

Arjuan Rampal won this category in a landslide; he broke no sweat throughout this race and finished well before the others could even start!

Best Supporting Actress

Kangana Ranaut – Fashion

Kangana Ranaut once again appealed to the masses with her dark character and bagged this award easy-peasy from the other nominations such as Bipasha Basu who followed her in this category for Bachna Ae Haseeno.

Kangana was thrilled to bits when she was informed of her win:

“I’m so thrilled!!!! I want to thank everyone who voted for me and made Fashion so special. Thank you people for giving me such an honor. Lots of love, Kangana”

Best Music

AR Rahman – Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na

It truly was a splendid year of AR Rahman in both Hollywood and Bollywood! We wish him the best of luck for the Oscars, and hope he wins the award like he did here by being the winner and runner up in this category for Jodhaa Akbar!

Best Action

Ghajini – Peter Hain

Nobody can forget the brutality in Ghajini and this is why Peter Hain’s action ability prevailed in this category!

Best Actor in a Comic Role

Abhishek Bachchan – Dostana

This was a no-brainer as Abhishek is still being applauded for his hilarity and comic sense for this movie! And, what more, Kirron Kher (Abhishek’s mother in the movie) was the runner-up! Just goes to show how much people loved Dostana!

Best Story

Madhur Bhandarkar, Ajay Monga & Anuradha Tiwari – Fashion

The jalwa of Fashion was admired by the people of BollySpice and was given this award, however with Neeraj Pandey for A Wednesday! right on its heels!

Best Newcomer Male

Imran Khan – Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na

Wowza, this was a toughie! One cannot say that Imran won this award easily because Farhan Akhtar for Rock On!! was right behind him, literally looking over his shoulder!

Best Newcomer Female

Mugdha Godse – Fashion

Mughda strutted through this category like she owned it, and she might well have because the janta loved her!

Upon hearing about winning the award, Mughda said:

“It’s my pleasure to receive this award! I receive it with huge pride as its given by the people who are the real judges. This award is fully dedicated to my director Madhur Bhandarkar who has discovered the actor inside me. Thank you very much BollySpice for letting me meet my newfound fans!”

Best Dialogue

Abbas Tyrewaala – Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na

It seems so that the audience likes fluffy dialogues much better than heavy ones in Jodhaa Akbar and A Wednesday who just missed this award by an inch!

Best Singer – Male

Javed Ali – ‘Jashn-e-Bahaara’ (Jodhaa Akbar)

The music notes of Javed Ali were appreciated a little better than KK for ‘Khuda Jaane’ from Bachna Ae Hasseno.

Best Singer – Female

Shreya Goshal – ‘Teri Ore’ (Singh is Kinng)

Who doesn’t like the beautiful voice of Shreya Ghoshal, she emotes each and every song and that what keeps the audience begging for more!

Best Screenplay

AR Muragadoss – Ghajini

AR Muragadoss manages to at least steal this award from its fellow contenders (Jodhaa Akbar and Fashion) with ease and grace.

Best Choreography

‘Azeem – O – Shaan’ – Jodhaa Akbar

Very unlikely winner, if I may so myself. During this period of party mixes and extreme dance moves, ‘Azeem – O – Shaan’ takes people by surprise and wins their hearts! However, that does not mean songs including ‘Desi Girl’ from Dostana were far behind!

Best Background Score

Salim Sulaiman – Fashion
AR Rehman – Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na
AR Rehman – Jodhaa Akbar

Whoa, three way tie! I bet none of us were expecting that! AR Rahman continues to wow us with his music while Salim Sulaiman is sneaky enough to bag him a spot too!

Star of Year 2008 – Male

Aamir Khan

From his six-packs, to naming his dog “Shahrukh” to his blockbuster movie‚ Ghajini, this man ruled 2008 with a powerful fist!

Star of Year 2008 – Female

Priyanka Chopra

She spanned her movies throughout the year from Love Story 2050 (and her supposed love affair with Harman Baweja) to God Tussi Great Ho, Chamku, Drona to finally Fashion and Dostana. Whew, that’s quite a list! Even though not all her movies performed well, she was certainly in the news for them!

Jodi of the Year 2008
Abhishek Bachchan & John Abraham – Dostana

They came as a biggest surprise and blew us away! Our first homosexual jodi of Bollywood reign as the Best Jodi of 2008!

And, so ends the year 2008, and as we start tasting the new movies of 2009, let’s not forget this year and its movies, which brought us many different angles of love, relationships and friendships! We salute the entire Hindi Film Industry and say thanks for all the entertainment! We can’t wait to see what is to come!
