Despite scorching up the ramp in one recently during the Wills India Fashion Week, Riya Sen says she doesn’t like wearing minis: “I am very fussy about my clothes and very moody as well. One will never catch me in a mini-skirt just like that,” she explains.

Riya is currently looking forward to appearing with her sister, Raima Sen, in an adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore’s Nauka Dubi. It was Riya who brought the Bengali project together under the direction of Rituparno Ghosh. In the original story, the sisters’ characters would not appear together but the story has been re-written slightly to accommodate this. “There’s no way the audience will accept me and my sister in the same movie without having scenes together,” says Raima, “In the original story our characters don’t come together at all. But Riya and I have to come face to face in our first film together.” For the movie, Riya has been chewing paan in order to get the authentic reddened teeth and mouth that the character requires.

Riya plays a college girl in Heroes and has previously appeared in Jhankar Beats, Shaadi No.1 and was most noticeable doing an item number in Heyy Babyy! She is trained in kathak dancing, kickboxing and belly dancing and was recently linked with Booker prizewinning author Salman Rushdie.

She has a number of interesting roles in motion including Dev Anand’s Chargesheet in which she appears in a very glamorous avatar, Kya Fool Hain Hum which co-stars Govinda and Ranvir Shorey and is a comedy. Finally in Paying Guest, Riya plays a whingeing, whiny cry baby. “My character is so whiny that if I were a guy I would never date a girl like that!” she exclaims.
