Bollywood veteran Amitabh Bachchan has stated how overwhelmed he feels that his cameo role in Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby has received positive reviews from Western critics. Bachchan posted on his Twitter account the review written about him by Variety Magazine, which stated the following. “By far the liveliest work in the film comes from two actors with only a few minutes of screen time between them: the lithe, long-limbed newcomer Elizabeth Debicki as gabby golf pro Jordan Baker, and, in a single scene that marks his belated Hollywood debut, Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan as the flamboyant Jewish ‘gambler’ Meyer Wolfsheim.” He responded to this with the following tweet: “In shocked disbelief… no no this cannot be true..!!!”

Luhrmann visited Bachchan in Mumbai two years ago to offer him a role in his $125 million project. The film also stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Cary Mulligan and Tobey Maguire in pivotal roles. Bachchan recalled his first ever meeting with the renowned Hollywood filmmaker. “Baz remembers his meeting with us and a meal at his place here in NYC … I wondered if he
had forgotten … people in his position and standing would perhaps do … and legitimate too, without offence… they are big and large and of much greater importance … they are tall and I am not at all…!!”

The Great Gatsby releases in cinemas worldwide on Friday and will officially open the Cannes Film Festival on 15 May!
