For a horror movie to take this kind of opening is a feat in itself, considering that it’s extremely rare for a Hindi movie that isn’t family-friendly to open this big. Prominent critic Taran Adarsh says the film is amongst Varma’s finest works and a fantastic experience even though Bhoot was scarier. Another critic says that’s it’s a “powerful, emotional drama” and very thrilling.
Reportedly, the film has taken an 85-90% opening even though it’s being released on a limited number of screens. Most expected the three releases this week to fall flat on their face since audiences are more keen to watch hits like Singh is Kinng and Bachna Ae Haseeno this weekend. But as usual, Ram Gopal Varma has sprung a surprise and left most people shocked–or shall I say, horrified (pun intended)!
Mumbai Meri Jaan, which also released today is getting rave reviews from audiences and critics and even though it took a slow opening, it is expected to pick up from good word of mouth. Currently, at Allbollywood.com, the film sits at the third best reviewed film of the year after Jodhaa Akbar and Khuda Kay Liye. The third release, Maan Gaye Mughall-e-Azam has opened low and received poor reports from all over.
So if you’re looking for something different this weekend you have two great choices; a spooky Phoonk or an emotional Mumbai Meri Jaan. Take your pick!
