08jan sunday movie06 SundayFor his new film, starring Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Ayesha Takia, Irrfan Khan, and Anjana Sukhani, director Rohit Shetty has chosen an unusual title: Sunday. Like the interesting title, the music for the soundtrack is also something a little bit different. It has mixture of songs by many different composers including Sandeep Chowta, Suroor, Daler Mehndi, Shibani Kashyap, Raghav Sachar and Amar Mohile, and because of this it encompasses varied musical styles. Though each song is unique, they fit together, producing an album that has songs that are filled with surprises in lyrics, beat and instruments. Let’s take a look and dissect each song:

08jan sunday movie03 SundayKashmaksh was composed and sung by Shibani Kashyap with lyrics by Virag Mishra. This song has a wonderful beginning with a soulful trumpet and a great drum beat, and is the backdrop for a spicy item number starring Esha Deol. Shibani Kashyap sings the slow parts with great feeling and has a great quality of voice. She is the best part of the song. The song is a very eclectic mix of musical styles that it is very hard to put in one genre. A good song that I think will play better in the context of the film.

Kashmaksh — Remixed: Performed by DJ Suketu. I usually do not like remixes, but in this case I will have to make an exception. I actually like this version better than the original. A great song to dance to in clubs, the addition of the electronica does not take away but adds to the song.

Loot Liya is performed by Daler Mehndi and Sunidhi Chauhan and composed by Daler Mehndi and Farhad Sajid. This song has a great intro with a drum beat that segues to a very fast paced number. It’s sung with spirit and animation by Daler Mehndi and Sunidhi Chauhan, whose voices blend together perfectly. The back up music and singers are also full of pep and zest. Great song to dance to or since it has so much energy it might be a great song for a workout! One of the best parts of the song is “lulululululu loot liya!”

08jan sunday movie01 SundayManzar was sung and composed by Raghav Sachar, with lyrics by Aditya Dhar. This one is a club number that starts off with a Rhythm and Blues feel to it, and has a beat that will get your feet a tappin’. A jazz note brought in by the addition of a saxophone makes the song even better. It also has a rock guitar riff and the song is a mix of Indian and western flavors that fit together wonderfully. A good song to listen to and to get your groove on, whether in the club or in your bedroom!

Missing Sunday, performed by Earl Edgar, Mahua Kamath and Suraj and composed by Sandeep Chowta with lyrics written by Farhad Sajid is a very modern number that also has some definite R& B influence, and a little electronica thrown in as well. The emphasis is on the music but it does have some Hindi and English lyrics. It has many musical changes that seem to flow together to make a super song. This is one to turn all the way up while taking a road trip or just cruising.

08jan sunday movie05 SundayMissing Sunday — Remixed: The remix is very electronica and the addition of the synthesizer takes away from the song instead of enhancing it. It’s best to stick to the original and skip this one.

Pyaar To Hona Hi Hai by the band ‘Suroor’ was written by Kamran Bari: he and Mohammed Ali are an excellent match to sing the best track on the album. The song begins with acoustic guitar and when violins are added into the mix along with Kamran Bari’s smooth voice you know you are going to love listening to it. There are some great harmonies and the melody just flows and takes you to a wonderful, in-love place. With lyrics like “tum jhoom lo yeh zameen assman tum chum lo” (Everyone’s having fun, you try it too… touch the skies and the earth) and “pyaar to hona hi hai ho jaane do”(Love’s bound to happen, let it happen) you can’t help but love the song even more! By far my favorite track of the album and one of my favorites of many of the new soundtracks! Pyaar To Hona Hi Hai elevates the album from 2.5 stars to 3! There is also a remix of this wonderful song but again, just put the original on repeat and forget the remix.

08jan sunday movie02 SundaySunday Theme: Performed by Clint and Joy and composed by Amar Mohile. Both Sunday and Missing Sunday begin with the same guitar, but in the Sunday Theme it changes to a very rock number. Like so many of the tracks on this album it is a mix of many different musical styles. It is a musical fusion of Indian beats with a bit of Punjabi thrown in, some Rock, some R & B and is just full of high energy singing and playing. It is a very fast paced with a great back drumbeat. The lyrics are all in English and after hearing this song you certainly won’t forget the name of the movie. Bahut maza!

Overall Sunday is a very good album that breaks out of the norm of Bollywood soundtracks. Worth a listen, and ‘Pyaar To Hona Hi Hai’ will certainly be a song to add to your Bollymix playlist!
