Vishal Bhardwaj’s new film!

42-year-old Ajay Devgan and 23-year-old Anushka Sharma will star in Vishal Bhardwaj’s new film Matru Ki Bijli Ka Mandola. With a unique title, a veteran director, lyrics by Gulzar, and a new costar pair, the film is catching everyone’s attention. “I was also missing working with Ajay for some time. He is such a great actor and an even greater human being,” Vishal says about the casting of the lead role. As well, Ajay has nothing but praise. “Vishal Bhardwaj is an incredible director who has the ability to bring out the best in any actor.”

The film is set in Haryana and it is a comedy that Vishal has been working on for years. Other than that limited information, however, the plot remains a mystery. There have been murmurs that the film is a satire. Of what, that remains unknown. The rest of the cast has not been released. The film is slated to open in 2012.

Seven Reasons We Love Kareena Kapoor

Kareena Kapoor is a classic. She is beautiful and sexy and talented. Since her debut performance in Refugee, in which she was praised because of her ease in difficult scenes, Kareena has stunned audiences with her magnetism and charisma. That was in 2000. In 2001 she starred in five films, two of which she was praised for her acting. In 2006 she acted in five different films. Chameli and Dev both were both critically acclaimed. Other films in which Kareena was recognized were Omkara, Jab We Met, Kurbaan, 3 Idiots, We Are Family, and Golmaal 3. She is a hard worker and she has been an iconic image in Bollywood. According to Rediff, Bebo has been one of the “Bollywood’s Most Beautiful Actresses” with her signature lips and attitude. She also made it on to the list of “Women of Many Faces”. With such an impressive filmography from which to draw evidence, it is difficult to narrow down the reasons why we love Kareena Kapoor.
Lets start with some of her best performances…

She’s a classic in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

Let’s start early on with a film that became a classic almost immediately. With an all-star cast, Kareena had lots to live up to. Her Bebo style and attitude quickly added the distinctively wonderful Pooja to an already fabulous film. Her character was too cool for school and all of her movements, dialogues, and outfits showed that. She played an Indian whose western clothes and club hopping shocked her elder sister and brother-in-law. Kareena made the character of a Western immigrant lovable and clever.

She surprises us all with her depth in Omkara

After a few sweet romantic movies, Kareena blew us all away with her vulnerable, yet powerful performance in Omkara. She was an innocent to the core in this film and it was heart wrenching and frustrating. Even in her very sensual scene with Ajay Devgan she was innocent and full of depth. Her character made Omkara’s character, if not lovable, understandable and relatable. She was the beauty and innocence in a story of corruption and jealousy. The song “O Saathi Re” was a perfect example of this.

She’s a Cutie in Jab We Met!

By the time Jab We Met came out Bebo was all grown up and exploring different roles and different attitudes. Far from the childish and snarky Pooja, Geet was a peppy young woman looking for her own path in life. Her role was full of life and she was able to showcase her amazing comedic abilities. The more she babbled, the more audiences fell in love with her. Her chemistry with Shahid was the strongest part of the film. Their relationship progressed naturally and their friendship was believable and endearing.

She Believes in Important Causes

Kareena surprises and touches us off-screen, as well. In 2004, Kareena helped raise money for the Indian Ocean Earthquake by telethoning with other Bollywood stars. In 2008, Kareena contributed her voice and her influence to the 1GOAL Education for All campaign. Of the project and the education in South East Asia she said, “Education is a way to emancipation. It is not just freedom from poverty but also from hopelessness.” You go, Bebo!

She’s Got Style

After the success of Jab We Met, Kareena decided to launch a clothing line of her own to feature her style in an affordable, yet chic way. Her clothing line includes T-shirts, harem pants, and other casual garments. The successful line is also going international. The new designer states, “my being a fashion icon also depends on my attitude and mood of the moment,” a fact that gives her style a fresh look. If more evidence of her style was needed, Kareena was voted one of Rediff’s Best Dressed Women in 2007.

She’s got Great Taste in Men

Let’s go ahead and say it. She’s had some great ones in the past, but this is Saif Ali Khan. This is a man with a tattoo of her on his forearm. This is a man who seems to have halted his player image for a steady relationship with her.

She’s Always got Something New and Exciting on the Horizon

Since her debut eleven years ago, there has not been a time when fans have had to wait long for a Bebo film. Her hardworking ethic and film background drive her to come out with many different films a year. This year is not any different. Tomorrow is the anticipated release of Bodyguard, starring Salman Khan. After that expect to hear a lot about Ra.One. with Shah Rukh Khan, a science fiction movie. Check out the sneak peak for the song “Chammak Challo”, with Bebo sporting a traditional look. If that wasn’t enough two more films are slated for 2012: Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu with Imran Khan and Agent Vinod with boyfriend, Saif Ali Khan.

Kareena Kapoor, the only Bebo in Bollywood really lives up the Kapoor name on and off screen.

Indian Film Festival receives grant

In 2012 the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles will celebrate its 10th Aniversary with an extra $10,000. The donation comes from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which annually grants money to ﬁlm organizations, charities, and the Golden Globe Awards. Many Hollywood actors have received money from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for personal charities or ﬁlm projects.

Film submissions have already begun for the festival to be held next April. Last yearʻs festival featured Disneyʼs Zokkomon. This year should bring many more emerging ﬁlmmakers, notable members of the Indian ﬁlm industry, and talent from around the country.

The ﬁlm festivalʼs location and mission lends itself well to cultural exchange of ideas. By encouraging interest in Indian ﬁlms, the festival brings Indian ﬁlm industries, not limited to Bollywood ﬁlms, to the world stage. The Hollywood Foreign Press Associationʼs grant is not only a ﬁnancial gesture, but one of cultural interaction and mutual interest in the ﬁlm world.

Who will bag the role of Milkha Singh?

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s much awaited upcoming film, based on Milkha Singh, has been getting a lot of interest from possible candidates for the lead role. Back in May when Mehra had yet to cast any actors for the film, the director explained, “Any actor would kill for the part of Milkha Singh. This kind of a subject comes to an actor once during his lifetime.”

Later, Akshay Kumar and Abhishek Bachchan were being considered for the role of the Flying Singh. Milkha himself, however, was pulling for Akshay. “I strongly feel that my role should be played by Akshay Kumar. Being a Punjab da puttar, he has the right physique and also acts well.”

However, after the hit Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Farhan Akhtar is now in the running. He has proved himself a talented actor and his physique would be a good fit for the athlete. While the actor could not be reached for comments, if he took the role, it would be his first foray outside his own production house Excel Entertainment.

Salman aims to be the best at dancing

Salman Khan is putting all his effort into his dancing, says a source close to the actor. After the success of Dabangg and Sallu’s dance numbers, he wants to be the best. The best Khan, that is. Whether in romantic numbers such as “Tere Mast Mast Do Nain” or fast paced tracks like “Desi Beat”, Salman is perfecting his style and moves.

With help from choreographer Mudassar Khan and song director Sumit Dutt, Salman Khan is branding a new style of shooting dance numbers. Mudassar is helping Salman with his dancing in the upcoming film Bodyguard and possibly with more films after that.

Sources say that Mudasar is with Khan on every shoot and is pushing the actor to take some changes in his dancing. Salman shot “Desi Beat” many times to make it perfect under the guidance of Mudassar.

With three films on the horizon, it looks like Salman is heading toward a renewal of his acting career and it’s starting with his moves.

Singh is Kinng sequel

After Singh is Kinng blew up box offices in 2008, fans and filmmakers alike are anxious to recreate magic in the sequel. The 43-year-old star of the film, Akshay Kumar, is ready to make the sequel, but is waiting for a good script to start the film. “Once I get it [a good script], I would love to make the sequel,” Akshay tells reporters.

The sequel certainly would have a lot to live up to. The comedy, romantic pairing, acting, and music all combined to make the first film a huge success in India and abroad. Much of the success is attributed to the director, Anees Bazmee, who has produced many great Indian comedies in past two decades such as No Entry, Welcome, and the most recent Ready. However, it looks as if, Bazmee will not be part of the Singh is Kinng sequel. Director and producer Vipul Shah, who has a track record of being hit or miss, will take over as director.

The other variable in the sequel is costar Katrina Kaif. It is uncertain whether or not she will be in the sequel due to a busy schedule working on Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and Ek Tha Tiger.

With so many uncertainties, fans may be concerned about the sequel releasing at all. But everyone can relax. Akshay already made a promise to the Indian Prime Minister Shri Manmohan Singh that the story would continue.

Zoya talks about ZNMD

Zoya Akhtar’s newest project since her debut film, Luck By Chance, is making splash with its all star cast. It is the interaction between the six wonderful actors that has everyone on the edge of their cinema seat. Only days away from the July 15th release, Zoya tells The Times of India just what makes each actor a special part of the team.

Hrithik Roshan was in Luck By Chance, but this time gets to shine in a lead role as Arjun, one of Kabir’s best friends. Abhay has a unique acting style and paired with a former costar, Kalki Koechlin, their chemistry is expected to sizzle. Kat’s on screen smile captues the audience attention, but apparently her set presence is “sets up a very pleasant environment,” Zoya comments. As for Farhan, Zoya finds it easy to work with him and understands his methods.

This film not only feature a hero and a heroine, but an ensemble cast that works off each individuals eclectic backgrounds. “In terms of collective equity, it doesn’t get bigger than this,” says Zoya. “Thanks to these wonderful actors, ZNMD has a different vibe.”

Rani as Director?

There comes a time for every Hindi film star when he or she is in between playing the young lover and the auntie/ uncle. There are some other on screen options, of course, such as the divorcee or the single parent. A trendy option these days is trying out a new role behind the camera.

With a full and accomplished acting career behind her, Rani Mukherjee might be headed for the director’s seat. The contradictory rumors flying around B-town make it difficult to get a grasp on Rani’s intentions, however. “I am happy as an actor,” she explains. “If I get a great subject to make a film, I will take it up to see if it works. But that’s only for a later stage, when I get married, have kids and settle down,” she explains.

Rani acknowledges that a director must understand stand the film on a larger scale from pre-production to editing. This certainly would be new territory for the talented actress. But, if Shahrukh can do it, why not Rani?

Security flares curiosity on the set of Heroine

Fans are getting worked up as security increases on the set of Heroine. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is said to have put on weight and changed her appearance drastically for her role in the film, and curiosity is getting the better of everyone. “Members of the crew are being frisked thoroughly. Junior artistes, who are most likely to leak pictures, have been banned from carrying mobile phones,” says the Hindustan Times.

Ash’s role is that of a Bollywood superstar whose fame and public image drag her down a spiral of alcohol abuse and failures. As a Bollywood superstar herself, Ash is a good choice for the role and a definite pull for audiences to see the film.

The extra security on set is also added promotion for the film. Sources say that Mrs. Bachchan will be gaining some weight and audiences are dying to see what her look will be. Siddharth Roy Kapoor, CEO of UTV says, “We are guarding Heroine’s look because it has interesting and never-seen-before sequences. We want audiences to look at them in one go when the film releases.”

Producer Shah Rukh Khan worked to Promote Always Kabhi Kabhi

The new film, Always Kabhi Kabhi by debut director, Roshan Abbas promises fresh faces and a youthful spirit. However, the publicity for the film, as of late, centers around its famous producer. In fact the trailer for the movie features King Khan prominently and introduces the characters through his narration.

Perhaps intimidated by other big name films, the new director is taking full advantage of this angle of promotion. At a recent shoot of the song ‘Antenna’ a nearby crowd could hardly help noticing Shahrukh’s presence. “This is his popularity and you need that kind of promotion and support for a film like this,” Abbas tells sources.

While AKK introduces such young stars (the youngest of which is only 20-years-old) Shahrukh’s presence in the promotion boosts the maturity level of the film. He himself has acted in teen, school dramas from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai to Main Hoon Na to Mohabbatein. Whether or not he makes a cameo in this film, SRK’s influence may just invest a teen drama with a greater amount of wisdom and depth.

The film, which released Friday has been given mixed reviews and Abbas said, “Hey to all who love it we love you! AKK is an attempt to capture some parts of your life…TO all who don’t respect…films are an attempt we got somethings right n some wrong but well the journey continues.”
