Let’s face it, 2011 hasn’t been Bollywood’s best year, and there’s much that can be done to make sure 2012 is better. Let’s take a look at what should be the industry’s top fifteen resolutions for the New Year.

1. Use “Hinglish” titles only when appropriate!

I wonder if it’s even fair to label Bombay’s film industry the “Hindi” film industry, because I’d say at least 50% of film titles in 2011 have been in English. Sometimes using English in a title works (i.e. The Dirty Picture, Tanu Weds Manu), but these Hinglish (many times, simply English) titles often elicit a “WTF.” Titles like Always Kabhi Kabhi, Luv Ka The End and Love U Mr. Kalakaar are unintentionally hilarious (read: stupid) while generic English titles like Game and Ready are just plain lazy. A title is one of a film’s first selling points and can spark interest or act as a complete turn off, so let’s work on getting them right.

2. Kareena Kapoor will stop taking on boring roles in mediocre films.

Look, no one’s saying Kareena Kapoor can’t act. But it would be nice if she did it more often. In both Bodyguard and Ra.One, Bebo played second fiddle to an attention-hogging male lead, making easy money in mediocre films. Is this what we expect of the industry’s most bankable female actor? With over ten years of experience, she should be setting (and raising) the bar for other actresses, not taking the easy way out by latching on to a Khan in hopes of a hit film. She recently said that she is glad to be working in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine because she hasn’t done a “performance-oriented” role in a while. The question is: shouldn’t all of Bebo’s roles be performance-oriented?

Other actresses who need to step up their game: Bipasha Basu, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra

3. Music directors will get over the whole “sufi” craze (It’s good music, but let’s have some variety!). And let’s give our female singers some more scope.

It’s become a staple for every Hindi film soundtrack to feature a sufi-inspired track that most likely features Rahat Fateh Ali Khan (or someone who sounds like him). Sure, they’re great songs, but this trend is getting extremely repetitive. On that note, female singers are getting completely sidelined by their male contemporaries because so many film soundtracks feature a solo male singer (i.e. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Rockstar, Mausam). Let’s mix it up, shall we?

4. Bring those scissors out. Let’s start editing better so good movies don’t go to waste.

Even good movies in 2011 were hampered by poor editing. Films like he Dirty Picture, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, and No One Killed Jessica were good, but could have been even better if editors were more liberal with their scissors. Seeing Vidya Balan gyrate to ‘Honeymoon Ki Raat’ in TDP was grating, a sequence that could easily have been cut from the film. Is anyone else tired of saying that a film wasn’t great because it felt “too long?”

5. Shah Rukh Khan will stop trying so hard, and instead, do what he does best.

I hate to break it to you, but Shah Rukh Khan is getting old. The 46 year-old actor simply can’t pull off a Raj from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, no matter how badly we want him to. This year, we’ve seen him as the iconic Don and G.One. While he was good in both, the good ol’ SRK magic is completely missing, and it might be because King Khan is trying too hard to be cool. I mean, really, SRK mouthing lines sung by Akon? It just doesn’t fit. I’d like to see SRK play roles that play up his signature charisma, without forcing the “cool” factor down audiences throat. We get it, he’s cool. He is SRK, after all.

6. Bring back good ol’ classic Bollywood, trees and all.

Today, we laugh about drawn out song sequences with a romantic pair singing in fields and forests, but these are the characteristics of Hindi cinema that made it famous. It’s definitely nice to see filmmakers try different things, but audiences are hungry for some classic Bollywood—probably why they lapped up a film like Dabangg two years ago. Even The Dirty Picture played up classic Bollywood stereotypes and audiences loved it. In 2011, most films were either “slice of life” flicks or masala action films, but the quintessential Bollywood drama is slowly becoming extinct.

7. Actresses like Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta, etc. will come back in a big way.

With 2011 acting as one of the most disappointing years for female actresses, audiences are looking back to old favourites like Rani Mukerji and Preity Zinta with nostalgia, who could easily stand out even in films with dominating male actors. It’s good news that Karisma Kapoor will have Satte Pe Satta and Dangerous Ishq (2012), because the industry is in dire need of good female performers.

Other actresses that we miss: Konkona Sen Sharma, Kajol, Tabu

8. Yash Raj Films will take a break until they rediscover their old magic.

Remember when a Yash Raj Films was a keenly anticipated event? Not anymore. Both Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and Ladies vs Ricky Bahl were boring duds, proving that YRF have lost the spark they had in the early 2000s. Y-Films, a branch of the production house focusing on films targeted at the youth produced Luv Ka The End and Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge, and only the latter was watchable (Don’t get me started on the former). It’s time that Yash and Aditya Chopra put things on hold until they figure out what’s going wrong and how to fix it.

9. The industry will finally get over Katrina Kaif. Please?

By now I’ve accepted that Katrina Kaif is here to stay, and she’s certainly more watchable than she was a few years ago. But why can’t the industry accept her for what she is: a beautiful woman, but an absolutely mediocre (and I’m being generous) actress. After ‘Sheila Ki Jawaani’ in late 2010, she was also featured in a song from Bodyguard and now in Agneepath’s ‘Chikni Chameli.’ She’s about as good of a dancer as she is actor, but her popularity with audiences seems to make her first on every director’s wish list. There isn’t much more to say about Kaif, because if you’ve seen any of her movies and have half a brain, you’ll know why she’s the most overrated star in the industry.

10. Mallika Sherawat will give up on Hollywood.

Look, Mallika. I know Bollywood hasn’t always been the most kind to you, but you haven’t exactly been the easiest person to get along with either. Let’s call a truce. We miss you, and now that you’ve had some fun meeting foreign celebrities in Los Angeles, it’s time to get back to work in India. In 2011, we saw Sherawat bust a move to item numbers like ‘Razia,’ ‘Shalu’ and ‘Jalebi Bai,’ but both her cross-cultural acting pursuits were laughable. Let’s not forget that this chick can give most current actresses a run for their money; she was excellent in 2002’s Murder and 2006’s Pyaar Ke Side Effects. I’m not sure if the problem is at Mallika’s end or the industry’s end, but the fact of the matter is that we don’t get to see her on screen in full-fledged roles enough. Anyway, why do Z-grade films in Hollywood when you can do big-budget films here?

11. Abhishek Bachchan will get a hit!

In the past five years, Abhishek has had thirteen releases and only three sure-fire hits (Guru, Dostana and Paa). If there’s anyone who desperately needs a successful film right now, it’s him. In 2012, he’s playing it safe with multi-starrers like Players (which looks wannabe-cool but might do well), Bol Bachchan and Dhoom 3 (which will likely release in 2013). For Abhishek’s sake, let’s hope one of his films in 2012 is a quality film that becomes success.

12. Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor will take acting classes together.

Their debuts were on the same day five years ago, but neither actress has managed to prove their worth despite all the hype. In 2011, Deepika was bland in Aarakshan and Desi Boyz while Sonam hammed (as usual) in Mausam and Thank You. We’ve given them five years to prove their acting chops, and that’s five years too long. Desperate times call for desperate measures and it’s time that Padukone and Kapoor invest in some acting classes before disappointing us time and time again.

13. Madhuri Dixit will sign a damn film.

After Aaja Nachle’s failure at the box office, it’s understandable that Madhuri Dixit is being extra picky about her next film. There’s been tons of rumours, but no official announcements. The clock is ticking, Mads. Just sign it!

14. The obsession with foreign actresses will end.

Every year, there’s at least one film that features a foreign actress trying to be desi. This year, it was Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar find, Nargis Fakhri, who was almost universally panned for being one of the film’s weakest points. When will filmmakers learn that fair skin and dark hair doesn’t make a good actress. I’ll be interested to see how Amy Jackson fares in the upcoming Ekk Deewana Tha, though I don’t have high hopes. It’s not that foreign actresses are bad, but they are given roles that don’t fit them. It’s not rocket science, people; if you don’t look and sound like you could be Indian, how can you play a person who is born and bred in India?

15. Salman Khan will raise the bar for himself.

The last few years have seen a re-emergence of Salman Khan’s popularity, and rightly so. He’s undoubtedly the king of the masses, but it’s time for him to move away from the masala action entertainer and show us that he can do something different. Wanted, Ready, Bodyguard – they’re all starting to look the same now. Rumours suggest that he’s teaming up with Rajshri Films for another love story, which might just do the trick.

In my fourth year of compiling the list of the top ten actresses of the year, 2010 has definitely been the most challenging. Call me a cynic, but I believe that the Hindi film industry is going through a crisis of sorts in terms of female talent. Barring a few, the current crop of actresses seems to be stuck in limbo: we have several newcomers who are still learning how to act and veterans who aren’t doing the kind of work they’re capable of (I’m not naming any names!). Nevertheless, 2010 has seen some solid performances by actresses who have shown extreme growth, and that’s certainly a bright sign for the future. So, who made the cut? Let’s have a look.

10. Konkona Sen Sharma and Sonam Kapoor (tie)

They couldn’t be more diametrically different, but these two actresses have both done decent work this year, though neither has really been particularly mindblowing. Dependable as always, Koko was completely natural in Atithi Kab Jaoge and Mirch, but we know that she is capable of so much more. Sonam Kapoor, on the other hand, tried desperately to make her mark with big-budget releases like Aisha and I Hate Luv Storys. She was slammed by critics in both, but audiences seem to be warming up to her.

Next steps: Though we’re extremely happy to hear that Konkona is expecting her first child, we hope that her pregnancy doesn’t keep her away from the silver screen for too long. Let’s be honest, Sonam is still a work in progress. We’d like to see her shy away from the big-budget bonanzas that always cast her as a superficial young girl and move on to something more challenging.

Normally when I see a movie, the critic in me is immediately ready to find a computer, open Microsoft Word and let the words flow from my brain to my fingertips to the screen. But it’s been three days since I’ve seen Kiran Rao’s Dhobi Ghat and I still can’t fully understand how or why it affected me. It’s the kind of film that seeps into you slowly and silently, without your awareness.

It would have been so easy for Rao to make the kind of film that Aamir Khan’s wife would be expected to make. After all, he’s one of the biggest stars in India and despite his presence, this isn’t the Aamir Khan film you’d expect. Khan plays one of four central characters, whose lives are each woven into the intricate fabric of Mumbai.

Rao’s love for Mumbai is visibly apparent in her debut film, which truly is a stark love letter to India’s city of dreams. It’s set to an exquisite soundtrack by Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain, Babel) and delicately captured by cinematographer Tushar Kanti Ray. Dhobi Ghat acts as a showcase for Mumbai, flaws and all, and it’s this intense honesty that is the film’s trump card. There is no better way to reach your audience than to tell a film with honesty.

She weaves the story of four Mumbaikers who have all taken from the city and given a piece of themselves in return. Shai (Monica Dogra) is an NRI who comes to Mumbai to pursue her passion for photography with little focus and understanding of the dynamics of the city. Her path crosses briefly with Arun (Aamir Khan), a reclusive painter who pushes her away the moment they begin to get close. The two are connected by their dhobi, Munna (Prateik Babbar), who toils away with the hopes of becoming an actor. Dhobi Ghat is the story of two individuals finding inspiration in the most unlikely places, using creativity as a medium to find themselves in a city that promises “to give and take in equal measure” (Cameron Bailey, TIFF 2010).

In the Indian film industry, there is a false perception that anything that isn’t your quintessential song-and-dance masala film must be one of those films that audiences generally hate and critics love. I disagree. Not all films that claim to be “different” are good. In fact, no matter what type of film you are looking at, there will always be good films and bad films.

Rao’s Dhobi Ghat is a genuinely good film, if not great. It’s so rare to come across directors (in any country!) who almost seem to give a piece of their soul to their films to make them truly unique. When you see Dhobi Ghat you will realize that Rao has made the film exactly the way she wanted to. This film has been made with tons of heart, and not the cheesy kind. It’s truly moving.

She knows her characters inside out and nothing seems fake or artificial (except for Monica Dogra, unfortunately. More on that later). It’s not necessarily a plot-driven film, but driven by its characters, which in my humble opinion is the best kind of film because it mirrors the complexity of real life. The nuances within the film, like the old woman who lives next to Arun, or even Munna’s coy affection for Shai, are captured with a raw sensitivity that is a rarity in cinema which is essentially all about creating exotic (and sometime escapist) worlds. Rao leaves all her characters to interpretation rather than spoon-feeding the viewer. As she slowly unwraps their layers, the film reaches a climax whose impact lies in its subtlety.

Mark my works, Dhobi Ghat will be Prateik Babbar’s well-deserved breakthrough role. The entire audience cheered when his name appeared in the credits, and he received a standing ovation at the film’s premiere. Babbar is an actor who hasn’t been groomed by the film industry and it’s this rawness that makes him so incredibly endearing. Khan is excellent, as usual, but we’ve come to expect that. He plays his part well, but allows Babbar and Rao to shoulder the film.

It’s unfortunate that Monica Dogra’s performance in the film is really the film’s most glaring flaw. She starts off extremely shaky, with poor dialogue delivery that hinders the realistic tone of the film, but eventually comes into her own by the end of the film. Still, you can’t help but think that another actress could have taken this role to a different level. Kriti Malhotra, in a much shorter role, outshines her.

The film has several moments that stay with you for days, and since the film doesn’t release until early 2011, I don’t want to spoil them. But I think it’s safe to say that here is another film from Aamir Khan Productions that is different from what audiences are used to but should be admired for its sheer honesty and creativity.

The ultimate purpose for rating a film is to advise audiences on how good a film is, and since Dhobi Ghat is so far from its release, I’m going to refrain from labelling it with a star rating out of five that I think often takes the essence out of a review.

Aamir Khan Productions has been extremely honest and told audiences not to expect a commercial potboiler in Dhobi Ghat, and they are absolutely right. In fact, don’t even expect a satire like Peepli [Live]. Dhobi Ghat is a quiet film that is unlikely to stir controversy or break box office records.

The film will be a landmark for Prateik Babbar, who stands apart from the Ranbir Kapoor’s and Imran Khan’s of Gen-X. Like his late mother, he possesses an enchanting quality that is quite hard to pinpoint exactly. In Kiran Rao, India can prepare to welcome a uniquely gifted writer, whose debut film is full of strength and conviction. It’s like poetry on film.

Well, loyal Bollywood fanatics, we’re halfway through yet another year and have a few gems and a whole lotta trash to show for it. That’s 26 Fridays and approximately 64 releases. Unfortunately, the past six months have been some of Bollywood’s dullest, but thankfully the few critical and commercial winners have been special enough to give us hope. In this mid-year feature, BollySpice staff reminisces on the best of the best of the past six months.

Best Album

Winner: I Hate Love Storys (Vishal-Shekhar)

Whether his films work or not, a Karan Johar film always promises one thing – good music. The latest album offering from Dharma Productions has struck all the right chords without limiting itself to a single generation. Vishal-Shekhar have come up with catchy tunes that are not too overbearing or loud. The picks of the lot would have to be ‘Bin Tere’ and ‘Jab Mila Tu.’ Let’s hope the film fares just as well!

Runner-up: My Name is Khan (Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy)

Best Song

Winner: ‘Tere Naina,’ My Name is Khan (Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy)

Easily the best love song in a while, ‘Tere Naina’ is soulful and at the same time extremely entertaining. The fact that it’s visually represented by the magical duo of Shahrukh Khan and Kajol certainly helps matters, but even standing alone, ‘Tere Naina’ walks its way into your heart.

Runner-up: ‘Noor-e-Khuda,’ My Name is Khan (Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy)

Best Comedian

Winner: Boman Irani (Housefull)

Is there anything Boman Irani can’t do? As Lara Dutta’s comical father in Sajid Khan’s entertainer Housefull, Boman is a complete scene stealer. And that says a lot considering that the film is a multistarrer!

Runner-up: Riteish Deshmukh (Housefull)

Best Villain

Winner: Manoj Bajpai (Raajneeti)

This one was completely unanimous. In the days of “grey characters” where true, pakka villains are few and far in between, Manoj Bajpai’s evil turn in Raajneeti completely brought the house down. With a bizarre haircut, Bajpai proved why he’s still in the business even after so many years. In a mammoth cast, he stands out and makes you hate him with a passion. Evil has never been so good.

Runner-up: None!

Best Supporting Actor

Winner: Arjun Rampal (Raajneeti)

Luck is certainly on his side these days. There has been no looking back for Arjun Rampal after Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om, which was followed up by a National Award for Rock On!!, a box office success in Housefull and now a stellar performance in Raajneeti. Rampal brought fire to his role as a politician, delivering an act unlike anything we have seen from him before. Let’s hope the good luck continues!

Runner-up: None!

Best Supporting Actress

Winner: Zarina Wahab (My Name is Khan)

What is it about maternal roles that make them so irresistible to audiences? In My Name is Khan, Zarina Wahab’s role as mother to a young Rizwan Khan was absolutely perfect. With a completely heartfelt and endearing performance, Karan Johar could not have chosen a better mother for the job.

Runners-up: Katrina Kaif and Shruti Seth (Raajneeti)

Best Actress

Winner: Vidya Balan (Ishqiya)

There’s just something about Vidya Balan that makes her irresistible. With all the right ingredients – vulnerability, charm and ferocity – Balan’s performance in Ishqiya was absolutely brilliant. Whether it’s the movement of an eye or a lovable smirk, she is flawless and gives her role as Krishna an edge that is inimitable.

Runner-up: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (Raavan)

Best Actor

Winner: Shah Rukh Khan (My Name is Khan)

In one of his most accomplished performances yet, King Khan managed to silence all his critics. He is the heart and soul of Karan Johar’s My Name is Khan and makes the film everything that it is. Very rarely does an actor command so much attention. His role as Rizwan Khan could easily have become overdone, but SRK pitches in a surprisingly restrained performance that makes you smile.

Runner-up: Arshad Warsi (Ishqiya)

Best Film

Winner: Raajneeti (dir: Prakash Jha)

This one is a complete given. Without a doubt, Raajneeti is the only film in the first half of 2010 that critics and audiences alike have accepted whole-heartedly. With a riveting plot embellished with extraordinary performances from an all-star cast, Prakash Jha hit the bulls-eye with his epic political drama. It had all the ingredients of a great entertainer, and despite a theme that is usually considered not commercially viable, Raajneeti has become the biggest hit of the year so far.

Runner-up: Ishqiya (dir: Abhishek Chaubey)

Six months down, six months to go. The first half of 2010 has taught us three lessons:
1. Big films are not always good and big stars don’t always mean big openings. (Cases in point: Kites and Raavan)
2. Never underestimate the power of the audience. The second you think you know them, they will change their mind. (Case in point: Raajneeti)
3. Just because experiments don’t always work, it doesn’t mean Bollywood should stop trying. Once in a while, risks pay off and you end up with a masterpiece. (Case in point: Love Sex aur Dhokha).

Here’s to hoping for good performances and even better films in the second half of 2010!

After years of hype about Raavan being ace director Mani Ratnam’s most grand film yet, the verdict is finally out, and it’s definitely a mixed bag. Some love it and some hate it. Noted critic Rajeev Masand calls it “a crushing bore of a film” while Rediff’s Aseem Chhabra says Ratnam “is in top form.” This, ladies and gentlemen, is the beauty of cinema: a single film giving birth to a thousand opinions. So is Raavan yet another let down in a year starving for good cinema, or is it simply not everyone’s piece of cake?

Simply put, Raavan does not in any way undermine the genius of Mani Ratnam – this is clearly his toughest film yet and he could not have come up with a better team to rise to the occasion. This makes it all the more painful to admit that even with the best team, Raavan doesn’t achieve the kind of excellence it could have. The film consists of striking moments of pure brilliance hampered by others that are simply tedious. Above all, the film falls flat in the writing department, with lead characters that are sometimes one-dimensional and unconvincing.

Modeled around the Hindu epic, the Ramayana, Beera [Raavan, Abhishek Bachchan], a rebellious outlaw and protector of “the people” kidnaps Ragini [Sita, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan] as revenge for the mistreatment of his followers, particularly his sister Jamuniya [Surpanakha, Priyamani]. What makes Ragini such a prized possession is that she is the wife of Inspector Dev Pratap Sharma [Ram, Vikram].

The film is essentially a two hour cat and mouse chase with few twists and turns and little to keep you on the edge of your seat. The film’s most intriguing aspect is the way it blurs the lines between good and evil, driving home the message that there is a Ram in every Raavan and a Raavan in every Ram.

One simply wishes that the characters were given more depth to create more of an impact. Beera is reduced to a mere caricature of a villain with a conscience. Dev is completely boring and you really don’t care what happens to his character, which undermines his love story with Ragini and thus the entire plot. The characters become interesting in the last fifteen minutes, but the average viewer has already lost interest by this point. Thankfully, Ragini’s character is slightly better etched and the supporting characters all stand out. Even Vijay Krishna Acharya’s dialogues are good but don’t reach their potential because of the thin plot.

On the flip side, the film’s technical team is so extraordinary that it makes an extremely simply storyline worth watching. Santosh Sivan and V. Manikandan create one of the best shot Indian films in recent times – an absolute treat. Shyam Kaushal deserves applause for the action in the film’s climax which is truly unique. You’ve got to hand it to the entire team for braving such tough locales. Every frame of the film boasts of authenticity.

Several sequences in the film stand out, including the flashback episode of Beera’s sister and one in which Beera tells Ragini of his jealousy. Watch out for Abhishek in the latter sequence – he shows you just why Ratnam chose him for the role. Unfortunately, the climax is a bit of a let-down ‘bang’ that it should.

As usual, A.R. Rahman’s music raises the film to a new level but it’s his background score that is truly remarkable. ‘Behne De’ is the best of the lot, mostly for its striking visuals. My only complaint is that the track ‘Ranjha Ranjha’ wasn’t used effectively.

Out of the three main characters, it’s Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who gets the best character and she proves why she’s far beyond a petty rat race. Sure, her screaming does get irritating, but if you were captured by a crazy villain, you’d do the same. She shines as the fiery Ragini. Much ado has been made about Abhishek’s Raavan act and although he’s good, one wishes he had taken the character and made it his own. He does the job well but fails to make the character truly memorable. Vikram gets ripped off with a poorly written character and not much to do.

Out of the supporting cast, watch out for Govinda who seems made for this role. Ravi Kissen is perfect, as is Priyamani who leaves a strong impression. Nikhil Dwivedi is one to continue to watch out for – all he needs is that one big role.

Personally, I enjoyed Raavan but with a tinge of disappointment in what could have been an extraordinary film. It let down by a plot that just isn’t riveting enough and half-baked characters. However, the film’s performances and technical aspects make it worth watching.

To be honest, I’d much rather watch a brave film like Raavan that falls a bit short than some of the recent garbage that Bollywood has churned out (cough cough, no titles mentioned!). Raavan is definitely worth a watch, even if it’s not the epic it was touted to be.

3 stars

One of the things that fans love about Bollywood is the love stories – we can’t get enough of them. And it is the two actors who make the love come alive and make us feel. Sometimes the combination does not work and so the film does not work. However, when it does, it is magic!! We all have our favorite jodis – the couples that just makes us sigh when we see them together on screen. There are classics jodis, of course, but we also get to see new combinations, which make a film work and make it an instant hit. Who do we think made magic together on the silver screen in 2009? Read on to find out!

10 – Imran Khan – Shruti Hasan (Luck)

Their pairing may not have set the box office on fire, but there’s no denying that Imran and Shruti share some kick-ass chemistry. Surely, their off-screen camaraderie can’t hurt. In Luck, the two were completely at ease with each other and make a visually appealing and natural pair. However, we get the feeling that we have yet to see the full potential of this jodi. Let’s hope producers take note—second time’s a charm? Let’s hope so!

9 – Salman Khan – Ayesha Takia (Wanted)

Who expected this? Initially when Ayesha Takia was cast opposite Salman Khan in one of 2009’s biggest money spinners, nobody was too excited about yet another pairing of a man in his 40s with a girl in her 20s. In fact, it’s getting kind of creepy. But we have to admit, somehow, these two made it work and turned out to be quite charming! They may not have been the hottest jodi of the year, but they must possess some sort of chemistry considering that nobody complained about them together. There’s something about Salman that makes him look good with almost anyone.

8 – John Abraham – Katrina Kaif (New York)

Considering the once-upon-a-time cold vibes between John-Bipasha and Salman-Katrina, one would expect the jodi of John Abraham and Katrina Kaif to be completely cold. Surprise! In New York, the two put their personal differences aside to create believable (at least to some extent!) characters. Most importantly, John and Katrina looked like an average, real couple. We’re not sure whether they’ll ever team up again, but we think that this jodi definitely has potential worth maximizing.

7 – Aamir Khan – Kareena Kapoor (3 Idiots)

Kareena Kapoor is seriously spoilt for choice. In the past year she made a film with all the top Khan’s and ended the year with an all-time blockbuster. Audiences have appreciated the fresh jodi of Kapoor and Aamir Khan…and in a big way! Seems like Kareena knew what she was talking about when she said she had always been dying to work with Aamir. In 3 Idiots, the two actors were completely in-sync with each other, feeding off of each other’s excellent performances.

6 – Saif Ali Khan – Kareena Kapoor (Kurbaan)

On the other hand, her jodi with real-life beau Saif Ali Khan was not universally appreciated. Regardless of what others say, we think the two make a pretty hot couple and their intensity scorched the screen in Kurbaan. For this jodi, it wasn’t really about great lines, but the fact that their chemistry is visible simply in their eyes is what makes them special.

5 – Shahid Kapoor – Rani Mukerji (Dil Bole Hadippa)

Before watching Dil Bole Hadippa, it was hard to visualize Rani and Shahid romancing on-screen. Somehow, the duo pulled it off brilliantly. Perhaps it was their sheer energy that made their jodi exciting, but you could tell that both actors were having fun—which is always infectious! After repeatedly seeing Rani act with the same actors over and over again, seeing her on-screen with Shahid was a welcome change.

4 – Saif Ali Khan – Deepika Padukone (Love Aaj Kal)

We’re not sure whether to attribute the excellent chemistry between Saif and Deepika to the actors themselves or to the genius of Imtiaz Ali, who seems to know all the right ingredients to creating perfect harmony in his leading pairs. Regardless, this jodi was fun and completely refreshing. A perfect example of this is watching them together in the track ‘Chor Bazaari’ where they shed their inhibitions and get completely involved in the song.

3 – Ranbir Kapoor – Katrina Kaif (Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani)

Thank God Katrina has found other people to act with besides Akshay Kumar! And just look at the results. Her jodi with Ranbir Kapoor was undoubtedly one of the most popular of the year. Not only do they look good together, but creatively they seem to mesh well considering that both actors delivered above average performances in the comic caper Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani.

2 – Shahid Kapur – Priyanka Chopra (Kaminey)

F-f-f-uper jodi! That’s about all we can say for this brilliant pair, who warmed our hearts in the action flick Kaminey. With no glamour quotient attached, Shahid and Priyanka prove that you don’t need fancy clothes or extravagant dance numbers to make a hit jodi. You need a good script and some excellent timing. And who can forget Chopra’s classic line: “Toh kya rape kiya maine tumhara?!” These two are seriously on-screen dynamite.

1 – Ranbir Kapoor – Konkona Sen Sharma (Wake Up Sid)

Opposites must attract. At least the incredible duo of Konkona Sen Sharma and Ranbir Kapoor says so. The most unexpected pair of the year has turned out to be the best. Kudos to director Ayan Mukherjee for taking such a risk in casting two unlikely actors in Wake Up Sid, proving that when risks pay off, the dividends are large. Individually, both Ranbir and Koko are excellent actors, so it’s no wonder that they are even better together. They say you find love in some of the most unlikely places, and in 2009, we found our favourite jodi in the most unlikely of pairs. (Cheesy, I know!) It’s not because they shared a sizzling kiss or look flawless — Koko and Ranbir created the kind of jodi you root for while watching a movie. You forget about their off-screen personas and become immersed in their coming-of-age love story. Let’s hope the success of this pair acts as a wake up call to other filmmakers — unconventional jodis are sometimes the best ones.

Special Mention:

Amitabh Bachchan — Vidya Balan (Paa): Hands down, the best mother-son duo of the year.

So there you have it, the couples that made the movies! We hope to see each of them fall in reel love again! We cannot wait to see who will make us sigh in 2010!

You know the drill. Every year BollySpice looks back at the year gone by, highlighting the best (and the worst) of the year. We often associate the term ‘actress’ in Hindi cinema with a woman who can successfully bat her eyelashes, dance and cry well. Well, times are a changin’. Each year that goes by we find actresses and performances that challenge and redefine the role of the conventional Hindi film heroine. I think I can safely say that there is no longer a “recipe for success” when it comes to actresses. The following list of the top actresses of 2009 will show you why–each actress on the list is unique, with her own strengths and weaknesses. Nevertheless, each possesses a quality that makes them deserving of a spot on this year’s countdown.

10. Mahi Gill

There’s always an actress or two that catches you off guard as a breath of fresh air. In 2009, it was the Dev.D girls. Mahi Gill, who reprised the role of Paro in Anurag Kashyap’s modern-day take on the classic Devdas, was a complete natural. With her disheveled hair and big eyes that speak volumes, there was no artifice to her performance which is such a relief in an industry that sometimes prides itself on being artificial. It’s difficult to bring something new to such a classic role, but Mahi re-invented Paro but kept her passion alive.

9. Kalki Koechlin

Like her co-star Mahi Gill, Kalki Koechlin caught everyone by surprised with a sensitive performance as Chanda. She conveyed the painful transition from a school girl to a prostitute perfectly. Although her character matures throughout the film, Kalki maintained Chanda’s innocence through her eyes. We haven’t heard of her signing any film for 2010, but let’s hope that filmmakers don’t let this promising actress go to waste.

8. Kangana Ranaut

This may be the fifth time Kangana has played a crazy person, but you gotta love her. By this point she has mastered the role, as demonstrated by her work in Raaz — The Mystery Continues. Although we wish she would try something different, there’s no denying that nobody plays a crazy person like Kangana! With only one significant release this year (we are not counting Vaada Raha, a waste of time!), Kangana makes our list for her sheer intensity and ability to do variations of the same role several times and still be convincing.

7. Deepika Padukone

Although Chandni Chowk to China is widely regarded as one of the worst films of 2009, we got the chance to see Deepika kick some serious butt in the film. Although the film didn’t work, it gave her the opportunity to prove that she can be versatile. Of course, her most important performance came later in the year in Imtiaz Ali’s Love Aaj Kal, which proved that with enough scope, Deepika can pull off a performance that wins our hearts. It wasn’t a perfect performance, but she gave a very natural dimension to her character, Meera. If she wants to consolidate her status as a leading actress in the industry, she needs to continue working on better performances. She’s certainly getting there!

6. Rani Mukerji

Watching Rani Mukerji on-screen in Dil Bole Hadippa was a fantastic moment in the past year of Hindi cinema. I’m sure I speak for others when I say that it made me realize how much I had missed her. Regardless of how the film fared, Rani’s charm is undeniable and she is easily one of the most talented actresses in the business. Few actresses could have pulled off her role in DBH so convincingly. As much as she is criticized for not taking risks, her role as Veer(a) was very risky and could easily have had people laughing at her rather than with her. It was a welcome change to see Rani smiling rather than crying, reminding audiences of what makes her so special.

5. Katrina Kaif

After a few years, Katrina Kaif finally finds a respectable place on this list. By taking on roles that give her scope to actually act, in 2009 Katrina was able to justify her status as one of the biggest stars in the country. She’s no longer just a lucky charm–in most of her films this year, her performance has played a large part in the film’s success. Earlier this year, she showed vast improvement from 2008 in the film New York, but it was Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani that garnered her both critical and commercial appreciation. Of course, Katrina’s year wouldn’t be complete without a useless role in De Dana Dan, but we can overlook that because of her other two performances. She may not be the most talented actress in the industry, but she’s certainly improving and is slowly silencing her critics. Love her or hate her–Katrina’s here to stay.

4. Vidya Balan

With only one performance this year, Vidya Balan’s role in Paa fit her like a glove — no other actress could have done it better. Watching her in Paa proves that audiences don’t need to see Vidya in a Kismat Konnection or Heyy Babyy. We love her just the way she is! Her work in Paa is easily amongst the best in her career, joining the ranks of Parineeta and Bhool Bhulaiyya. We’re glad Vidya has finally carved her own niche and hope she sticks to it. Her trademark charming smile and expressive eyes are hard to resist!

3. Kareena Kapoor

These days, Kareena Kapoor is spoilt for choice. In 2009, she worked with all the top Khans–Saif (Kurbaan), Aamir (3 Idiots), Shahrukh (‘Mar Jaani’ from Billu) and Salman (Main aur Mrs Khanna). Not to mention a lavish masala flick with Akshay Kumar (Kambakkht Ishq). Kareena’s achieved a state in her career that most actresses would die for. She can move back and forth between commercial and ‘unconventional’ cinema with ease, delivering solid performances in all genres. Her best work this year was in Kurbaan, where her sensitive and nuanced performance was a treat for all viewers. Even with less screen time in 3 Idiots, she was spot on. If there’s any actress who has mastered the art of pleasing both audiences and critics, it’s Kareena.

2. Konkona Sen Sharma

After a dull 2008, we’re so glad to have Koko back on the list. Konkona is so brilliant in every single film that it’s hardly shocking anymore. The best part is that Konkona makes each of her performances look so damn easy that you can’t even tell that she’s acting. Whether it was Wake Up Sid or Luck By Chance, she always takes control of the screen and infuses great energy into her work. Earlier in 2009 she was equally brilliant in a smaller but much-appreciated film, The President is Coming. Is there anything she can’t do? In our books, Konkona can really do no wrong.

1. Priyanka Chopra

For the second year in a row, Priyanka Chopra lands the numero uno spot on BollySpice’s annual list. With thirteen outstanding performances, Piggy Chops deserves this spot like no other. Both her films this past year are a testament to her sheer versatility. To be able to nail twelve performances in What’s Your Raashee? so brilliantly is no easy feat. Top it off with her endearing role in Kaminey and there’s no stopping her. After excellent work in Dostana and Fashion, her lucky streak seems to have reached a climax this year. Versatility is ‘in’ and no other actress in 2009 perfected it like Priyanka.

Special Mentions

Kirron Kher‘s work in Kurbaan simply cannot be ignored–she was fantastic and there’s just no other way to describe it.

In Tum Mile, Dhoondte Reh Jaaoge and 99, Soha Ali Khan was a complete natural.

Preity Zinta gave a stellar performance in Deepa Mehta’s Heaven on Earth, a Canadian film. She’s omitted from the list simply because the film is not an Indian production.

Looking back at a year always makes you slightly nostalgic. The year gone by leaves a trail of several memorable performances, with many actresses improving, surprising and coming into their own. Now I dare you: define a Hindi film actress.

She’s no longer just a lucky charm — in most of her films this year, her performance has played a large part in the film’s success. Earlier this year, she showed vast improvement from 2008, but it was Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani that garnered her both critical and commercial appreciation. Of course, Katrina’s year wouldn’t be complete without a useless role in De Dana Dan, but we can overlook that because of her other two performances. She may not be the most talented actress in the industry, but she’s certainly improving and is slowly silencing her critics. Love her or hate her — Katrina’s here to stay.

In 2009, she worked with all the top Khans — Saif (Kurbaan), Aamir (3 Idiots), Shahrukh (‘Mar Jaani’ from Billu) and Salman (Main aur Mrs Khanna).

Kirron Kher’s work in Kurbaan simply cannot be ignored — she was fantastic and there’s just no other way to describe it.

In Tum Mile, Dhoondte Reh Jaaoge and 99, Soha Ali Khan was a complete natural.

Looking back at a year always makes you slightly nostalgic. The year gone by leaves a trail of several memorable performances, with many actresses improving, surprising and coming into their own. Now I dare you: define a Hindi film actress.

We all make them, we all mean to keep them but do we ever? In case you haven’t guessed, we are talking about New Year’s resolutions and since the world is turning to another year it is time to make those promises once again. We thought we would give some advice to those we feel need some help in the Hindi Film Industry on what they might resolve to do in 2010! Check it out!

Yet again, Rani needs to ditch YRF and move on to bigger and better things.

We love her, she is fabulous but really where is the Rani of Black? Some of our staff loved Dil Bole Hadippa, some of our staff hated it and we all agree she looked amazing, but it did not make us go wow there is that brilliant actress we know and love! Time to spread your wings and go with another banner and get those roles that show why you are called the Queen of Bollywood!

Imran Khan needs to be more careful when choosing roles.

He made a splash in his first film but his second and third were not received that well except by his loyal fans. He was praised for his performances but the films not so much. We think he needs to channel some Mamaji and be a bit more picky! Here’s hoping that he took our advice early and I hate luv storys with Sonam Kapoor will show his acting talent and be his next big hit!

Big B needs to find yet another way to re-invent himself…it keeps us on our toes!

We did not think it was possible that the living legend could once again completely surprise us but he did that in Paa and we loved it! So what do we hope he will do in 2010? Do that again and more! We can’t imagine what he could do to top Auro and Debraj Sahai, but if it is out there we are sure he will try it! For now all we can say is WAH!

Deepika needs to take voice modulation lessons—her dialogue delivery is still terrible!

She is gorgeous yes, but as an actress we really feel she needs to enroll in Anupam Kher’s acting school. Not only to work on how she says her lines and make them believable, but also to get some emotion in those gorgeous eyes of hers. She has had some sparkles here and there, now she needs to find out how to hone her craft and instead of seeing Deepika we will know she is Shanti Priya, Gayatri and Meera.

Genelia needs to stop playing variations of the same role.

From what we hear Genelia in real life is a bubbly happy girl who is very positive about everything and her portrayal of that type of girl in reel life cannot be beat. However, that is all we have seen so far in her foray into Hindi films and we want to see her dig deeper and go for something totally different. She has the talent that is for sure and so we hope producers and directors take advantage of that, so we can stop thinking, oh Genelia is starring in it – must be a bubbly girl role!

Hrithik Roshan needs to get rid of the beard…what ever happened to the D2 look?

We know it is for a role but the beard is just not a good look for him and has to go! Please, please Hrithik go back to the off the scale hotness of D2! We love that look! We are looking forward to your performances, so we will wait impatiently until we get our hunk back! But for your next role can you please be clean shaven and well, all the girls on the staff request shirtless too!

Films about terrorism need to stop — they are way overdone.

Come on Bollywood, it’s getting old now. I understand that the current political climate calls for a few reflections on terrorism, but the theme is being beaten to death by filmmakers. It was unique when Kabul Express and Fanaa tried it out, but how many times are we going to see people with brown skin targeted by Americans because of their skin colour? How many seemingly innocent characters are going to turn into terrorists (i.e. Saif and John in Kurbaan and New York)? Don’t look forward to this resolution taking place any time soon – get ready for My Name is Khan.

Aishwarya needs to work on her appearance big time — marriage does not mean that she can’t look hot!

Who said that marriage means you can’t look hot anymore? Apparently Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Post-marriage to Abhishek Bachchan, we have consistently seen her take her appearance downhill. Of course she’s still beautiful, but she looks like she’s given up on taking care of her body. After all, it was only three years ago that she stunned us with her figure in Dhoom 2. We’re not asking for a size zero or anything, but we’d like to see Ash looking as sexy as she used to look, not covered up by oversized salwar’s and old lady-style sarees.

Bebo and Saif need to stop professing their love for each other in every single interview.

Okay, we know you guys are in love and that you spend all your spare time dancing around trees with each other – no need to let us know in every interview that you two do! Lovebirds Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, whose steady relationship has been the source of many headlines this past year, talk more about each other than their films. Naturally, we don’t mind once in a while (after all, this is Bollywood… we like some gossip!), but eventually it stops being cute and gets annoying. So hopefully in the New Year Bebo and Saif can tone it down just a little.

Akshay Kumar needs to stop playing it safe.

Just because 8 x 10 Tasveer failed doesn’t mean that Akshay Kumar should stop taking risks. In a recent interview, Kumar stated that in 2010 he hopes to focus solely on audiences and to entertain them. I hope that doesn’t mean yet another string of silly comedies. He’s already signed Priyadarshan’s Khatta Meetha in which you can likely expect a re-hash of all Priyadarshan’s earlier films. Let’s hope that Action Replay is a little bit more than a meaningless comedy. Doesn’t Akshay get bored?

Katrina needs to continue acting with people her age — she seems to do much better work.

I think Katrina’s finally found the secret to real success in the acting department. And it’s not Akshay Kumar. In 2009, most of Katrina’s acclaimed performances were opposite co-stars who are closer to her age than any father-like Khan’s or Kumar’s that she is used to working with. She fit in perfectly with Neil Nitin Mukesh and John Abraham in New York and her chemistry with Ranbir Kapoor in Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani was a complete rage. Personally, I think she should replace her affinity for Akshay with Ranbir! The best part is that when she acts with people her age, her acting seems to get ten times better. Let’s keep it up, Katrina!

Kangana Ranaut needs to stop playing roles where she is a drug addict, an alcoholic or crazy in any way, shape or form.

Seeing Kangana possessed, high or crazy is getting tiresome. In almost all of her films, Kangana plays variations of the same role. Don’t get me wrong, she’s absolutely brilliant in all of them, but we think it’s time for her to try something different before she gets typecast… or is it too late? Out of the eight releases in her career, she has played the depressed woman afflicted by alcohol, drugs or mental disorders in five of them. Let’s hope Raaz – The Mystery Continues was the last time we see Kangana possessed! It’s kind of losing its charm.

The good news is that several of the stars on this list have already acted upon their faults in 2009 and we can hope that none of them re-appear on our list next year. But New Years’ resolutions are hard to keep, so here’s to wishing all the stars on this list the determination to make 2010 a better year!

We, here at BollySpice of course resolve to continue to bring you the best Bollywood news, features, interviews and reviews out there so stay with us in 2010!

Happy New Year from all of us at Bollywood Spice Magazine!

There’s a very fine line between a film that pretends to address relevant global issues and one that actually does. New York pretended. Kurbaan does.

Kurbaan (written by Karan Johar and Rensil D’Silva) makes you sit on the edge of your seat partly because it’s a gripping thriller and partly because it hits so close to home. It seems so real that it’s almost scary. On a cinematic level, Kurbaan is a brilliant directional debut by Rensil D’Silva, who has created the kind of thriller Indian cinema has tried so hard to make in the last few years with only few successes. For producer Karan Johar, whose candy-floss cinema has become synonymous with Dharma Productions, Kurbaan is a huge step in the right direction.

I will admit—walking into Kurbaan I was wary that it was going to turn out to be a combination of Yash Raj Films’ Fanaa and New York. Boy meets girl, they fall in love and then she discovers he’s a terrorist. What does she do next? But Kurbaan is so much more than that. The plot is complex, and more importantly, incredibly intriguing.

Avantika (Kareena Kapoor), is a psychology professor based in New York who comes to India to visit her dad when he becomes ill. She meets colleague Ehsaan (Saif Ali Khan) who woos her in true-blue Bollywood style—the charming smile, the I-will-not-give-up-until-you-date-me attitude and of course a great song. All said and done, they get married and move permanently to New York where they buy a new house and begin to settle down. Just as Avantika begins to blissfully enjoy her perfect world, she discovers that there is more to Ehsaan than she thinks—he is part of a terrorist group that includes almost all their neighbours (Kirron Kher, Om Puri, etc.). We go back to the same question—what does she do next? You can rest assured that the proceedings are much more interesting than one would expect.

What makes a great thriller is a combination of so many aspects of filmmaking, and the team of Kurbaan has given the film their best. The technicalities are all excellent—clever cinematography (Hemant Chaturvedi), incredible dialogue (Anurag Kashyap, Niranjan Iyenagar), realistic action (well, as realistic as it gets—Parvez Khan) compliment Johar and D’Silva’s story perfectly. On a side note, I’d like to mention the striking opening credits which are, artistically-speaking, exceptional.

Of course, there are loopholes in the plot—every thriller’s downfall. How is a most-wanted terrorist walking around New York City without a care in the world? Is it really necessary for Avantika to seduce Ehsaan to get the documents she needs? (P.S. This is the overhyped steamy Saifeena scene—it’s “aesthetically” shot, as they say.) Why doesn’t Riyaaz want to go to the police? Why don’t the police fingerprint the fork that Ehsaan uses to kill someone—it’s the most obvious piece of evidence.

But you look over these minor details because, for the most part, the film has a tight script and doesn’t really give you time to think about these itty-bitty details. It keeps moving quickly, making almost three hours whiz by.

Most noticeable is the fact that Kurbaan is easily one of the best performances by an ensemble cast this year. Everyone is perfect—even the special appearances (Dia Mirza, Nauheed Cyrusi). But this is Kareena Kapoor’s film all the way. She gets the meatiest scenes and the most chances to emote. With an off-screen persona as large as hers, it’s a huge accomplishment that she makes you believe that she is the character. This is easily one of the best performances of her career—she’s come such a long way since Refugee, it’s incredible! Saif Ali Khan is more restrained but should be praised equally for his intensity and naturalness. The biggest surprise of the film is Vivek Oberoi, who gets a lot of space in the film and proves why he has stuck around in the business—he’s fantastic. Out of the supporting cast, Kirron Kher and Om Puri stand out, but all are perfect for their parts.

Perhaps the best part of Kurbaan is that it never gets preachy. It doesn’t send you home with a message, which is such a relief. For some reason most films that address global issues like to portray a certain viewpoint and only that viewpoint, but Kurbaan makes sure to leave room for all perspectives. Each character has a distinct purpose and voice, representing the multitudes of viewpoints on global terrorism. Kurbaan is a film that offers room for dialogue and discussion, allowing the viewer to form their own interpretations and opinions.

At the end of the day, it’s hard to walk out of the theatre and tell yourself that Kurbaan is just a film because it just feels so damn real. The film stays with you for hours, which is always a hallmark of a great movie. Kurbaan is likely going to be THE film of 2009. It certainly is for me.
