The writers at Bollyspice were invited to an exclusive press conference for the first ever Bollywood/British film Naachle London – effectively a British production, but heavily inspired from old school Bollywood with relevant doses of melodrama, music, dance and family values. The film is directed by Neville Raschid (Ealing Comedy, Lost Dogs) and stars Raj Ghatak, Jake Canuso, Fagun Thakrar, Alyssa Sharma and Sofia Hayat.

The film tells the clichéd yet ever appealing tale of a rich girl and a not so well-to-do boy falling in love against parental opposition. At the same time, it cleverly weaves current issues like the recession, interracial relationships, and the complexities behind broken homes in Asian communities with the obligatory stylised, catchy musical numbers which are a pre-requisite for any mainstream Bollywood film today.

Producer/Director Neville Raschid whose earlier credits include indie Brit flicks, Ealing Comedy and Lost Dogs, said, “Making a film is the closest thing a male filmmaker can come to creating a child. You ‘carry’ the film for many months; then comes the ‘labour’ period when you shoot and edit the film; and finally it is ready to leave home on the film’s release and you can’t do anything more about it anymore. Naachle London has been a marathon over an obstacle course with the finish line over a bed of hot coals. But it’s a film I am immensely proud of. During the shoot we had the August riots and the rain to contend with but all that slog will be worth it if the film is warmly received and does solid business at the box office. Aviary is set to shoot its second BollyBrit film in May 2012.”

Naachle London’s male lead, Raj Ghatak (‘Vijay’), said, “Where this film has its USP is in its Britishness. There have been British Asian movies before like Bend it like Beckham and Four Lions, but this film has been written, directed, produced, financed, acted, composed, and choreographed by British Asians, which makes it unique and why I wanted to come on board.”

British screen heartthrob, Jake Canuso (‘Alan’), said, “Neville gave me a call when he was doing Naachle London and he thought of me for the part of Alan. He told me I was going to do a wet shirt scene with Fagun, so I said yes straightaway! It reminded me very much of the sort of dreamy, happy, 1950s musicals which are basically made to take you away from realities. I had to learn Hindi as I played the “gora” in the film. I love the challenge of doing something that I haven’t done before.”

Model/ actress Fagun Thakrar (‘Pooja’), said, “This role was light and fun, but my character Pooja has tension with her family and her dad. Thanks to Neville for casting me opposite Jake, a very talented dancer. This wave of BollyBrit movies will be very appealing to those who are British and have Indian heritage.”

Screen debutante Alyssa Sharma (‘Krishna’), said, “This whole process, as a debut actor in the film, has been such a learning curve for me and working with experienced actors has taught me a lot about performing and how I should conduct myself. More than that I had a lot of fun working with them. It was an excellent opportunity and has changed me as a person. I am essentially a dancer and the whole role expects a lot of dancing from me.”

Don’t miss it when releases across the UK on 24 February 2012, and consecutively in India in the not too distant future.

Check out a few pics from the event:

2011, was a year of many highs and several lows for the Indian film industry. There was drama, catfights, box office clashes, chartbusting songs, 100 crore+ blockbusters, scandal, women centric films actually doing well, hook ups and break ups amongst other things.

To break away from the clichéd countdowns that appear at the end of each year, we at Bollyspice decided to compile a list of the Top 10 entertainers of 2011. The list isn’t just a countdown of movies, it’s a list of people, rumours, music, wannabe stars and starlets that made news and made us chuckle – both intentionally and unintentionally! Read on…

10. The SRK-Priyanka-Shahid merry go round (Rumour)

The ‘are-they-aren’t-they together’ status of their relationship left gossip mongers in a tizzy and provided much fodder for daily glossies. Naturally, both Sasha and PC denied it till they went blue, but when income tax officials raided Priyanka’s house in January, rumour has it that they were greeted at the door by a shocked Shahid (in just his shorts!). Tales of their break ups, fights and make ups continued to do the rounds until they finally called it quits halfway through the year.

If PC wasn’t breaking up/getting back together with Shahid, she was seen with Shah Rukh Khan, resulting in rumours of Gauri Khan being upset with their growing proximity.

Slander it may be – but it surely kept us entertained throughout the year.

9. The Abhi-Ash baby drama and Ash’s subsequent replacement with Kareena in Madhur Bhadarkar’s Heroine (Rumour/Fact)

2011 was also the year when Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan announced that they were going to be parents. Obviously, the press had a field day with this story – right from predicting the birth date (bets were on 11.11.11), to the gender of the baby – some even went so far as to say that the Bachchans were due to have twins, while several columnists insisted that the Bachchans had ensured that the baby would most definitely be a boy. Most of these bizarre, concocted stories all proved to be false though, when Ash and Abhi became proud parents of a baby girl at Mumbai’s Seven Hills Hospital on November 16, 2011.

Another controversy to stem from this story was Ash’s ouster from Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine. Ash announced her pregnancy midway through the shooting, leaving both Bhandarkar and UTV high and dry leading to a war of words between Amitabh Bachchan and Madhur Bhandarkar on Twitter, followed by the latters apology on a public platform. All ended well though, when Kareena Kapoor, the director’s original choice came on board at an astronomical price making Bebo one of the highest earning female artistes in the country.

8. Kangana’s attempts at English and her various surgical enhancements (Rumour/Fact)

Kangana Ranaut had a major hit this year in Tanu Weds Manu, but what caught everyone’s eye were those eye-popping assets she flaunted in David Dhawan’s abysmal Rascals. She flatly denied all of the allegations of course… but the results were visible in her two-piece which eventually made no difference to the box office performance of the aforementioned film. The alleged enhancement combined with her outrageously weird fashion sense and incomprehensible attempts at English get Kangana ninth place in our list – albeit unintentionally.

7. Sunny Leone shows em who’s boss (Television)

Where there’s Big Brother, there has to be controversy even if the show takes place in a somewhat conservative place like India. Porn star Sunny Leone’s entry into India’s equivalent of Big Brother, reality series Bigg Boss caused an outcry from the Lok Sabha and the BJP’s youth wing, but as they say rightly, you’re nobody until you’re talked about. As a result of her appearance on the show, her Twitter feed gained 8000 followers in just two days and she was one of the most searched celebrities on Google. Filmmakers jumped on the bandwagon too, with Mahesh Bhatt offering her the female lead in Jism 2 – a sequel to the 2003 smash hit Jism which starred Bipasha Basu and John Abraham, and made them Bollywood royalty over night.

6. The Veena Malik-FHM Circus (Print/Media/TV)

Starlets, these days will go to any lengths for publicity and Pakistani actress Veena Malik is one such prime example of this.

A massive controversy erupted in both Pakistan and India when Malik posed nude with the initials of Pakistan’s controversial Inter-Services Intelligence spy agency plastered across her arm – a shot which she claimed was doctored, whilst others claimed it was a cheap PR stunt for an upcoming reality show that she would be hosting. The shot resulted in, amongst other things, a ‘fatwa’ being issued by an Indian-Muslim body with even drama queen Rakhi Sawant joining the moral brigade and issuing venomous statements against her to be contemporary.

The story is still making headlines at the time of writing – and one thing’s for sure, Veena has certainly made people sit up and take notice…but whether all the drama results in unimaginable success or a fizzled career (Mamta Kulkarni – anybody remember her?), remains to be seen.

5. Shah Rukh Khan hamming beyond repair as the techy geek in Ra.One (Film)

The film itself was not half as bad as people made it out to be – it was a first of sorts for all its technical wizardry and a brave attempt to deviate from the norm, with many fans including many on our staff voting this film as the Biggest Entertainer of the Year. Ra.One was, without a doubt, one of the most talked about films of 2011 what with all the cash pumped into its publicity. While the film was tolerable, what was not was Shah Rukh Khan in a laughable role as a geek in the first half. Khan was so ridiculously over the top and hammy that when his character dies in the first half you almost breath a sigh of relief. Thankfully, the movie improved from there on but SRK’s unintentionally funny, spectacled afro act was, put simply, atrocious. Thankfully, he redeemed himself somewhat in his suave act in Don 2 which released at the fag end of 2011.

4. Akon’s chart-busting ‘Chammak Challo’ (Film/Music)

Forget the film, Akon’s chart-busting anthem ‘Chammak Challo’ very nearly made Ra.One worth the price of its ticket. Catchy with a capital C, Ra.One will probably be remembered for this song alone, which no doubt will be played at clubs and weddings for years to come. Full marks to Akon, for his Hindi pronunciation – maybe Kangana can take some tips. And lastly, but by no means the least, a special mention to a piping hot Kareena Kapoor gyrating to the number in her red ghaghra and nose ring, which became a style statement in itself.

3. Salman’s hat-trick of blockbusters (Film)

Love him or hate him, this rebel with a cause proved his clout at the box office and completed a hat-trick of blockbusters which began with Dabangg in 2010. In 2011, both Ready and Bodyguard proved to be huge money-spinners entertaining masses across the globe, even if they had little in terms of plot or coherence and were slammed critically. The amount of money that was generated by all three films goes to show that Salman is by far one of the most reliable draws at the box office. His acting range may be limited but the success of these films proves that he is, beyond a doubt, the darling of the masses.

2. Nargis Fakhri and her laughable debut in Rockstar (Film)

Ranbir Kapoor proved his acting chops yet again in this beautifully crafted, subtle Imtiaz Ali film which had lilting music by maestro A.R. Rahman. What Ali got horribly wrong though was casting 32-year-old debutante Nargis Fakhri as the female lead in this otherwise near perfect film. Fakhri was so bad she makes Katrina Kaif look like Madhubala in comparison. While Ranbir was flawless, he was let down by Nargis who had little to offer in terms of performance, ruining key portions of the film with her inexperience, blandness and unintentionally comical dramatics. I hate to admit, but even Sonam, Deepika or Katrina would have been marginally better choices – and that’s saying a lot.

1. Vidya Balan made us all go Ooh La La with her turn in The Dirty Picture (Film)

Without a doubt, the top entertainer this year was Vidya ‘Boombat’ Balan who raised oomph levels to the stratosphere with her uninhibited, free spirited portrayal of Silk – a lower class belle who makes it big in the film industry in Madras in the 80s. Her one liners, cracks and innuendos made an otherwise average film an outstanding one. Balan’s performance combined with the oh so catchy, straight out of the 80s Ooh La La get both her and the campy, kitsch song a place in the top spot as entertainment of the year.

We also have some Special mentions of worthy runners up to this list –
- ‘Bhaag D.K Bose’ – the cheeky tune from the cult film of the year Delhi Belly.
- Stars taking to Twitter to air their rants: Cases in point – Shahid Kapoor vs critics slamming his pet project Mausam, Shirish Kunder and Ram Gopal Varma’s rants against Ra.One, Bipasha’s scandalous photo showing two young girls tying her shoelaces to name a few.
- And films that were so bad they were good: Rascals, Singham, Patiala House, Thank You, Mausam and Game being prime examples.
So there you have it. From guilty pleasures, to ridiculous performances, to gossip and songs that made us smile or sit up and take notice – roll on 2012 – we look forward to being entertained – all over again!

Don 2, for all intents and purposes is an important film for Shah Rukh Khan especially after the flak he received for Ra.One and all its overkill and hype. The first Don, released in 2006 was a remake of an Amitabh Bachchan classic of the same name with a slight twist at the end, and its sequel moves the story forward.

Don 2 takes place approximately five years after the first one with the ruthless Don (Khan) still at large and on every wanted list across the globe. Inexplicably, he surrenders himself to Interpol officers Roma (Priyanka Chopra), Malik (Om Puri) and the authorities in Kuala Lumpur in the hope of gaining immunity from criminal prosecution in exchange for information on all his contacts and illegal activity.

Once inside prison, he befriends his archenemy Vardhaan (Boman Irani) and escapes with him to carry out a cunning plan that will bring Europe to it’s knees and obviously earn him wades of cash in the process. He enlists the help of his loyal moll (Lara Dutta) and an ex-hacker (Kunal Kapoor) to bring his ambitious plan to fruition. The rest of the plot deals with the obstacles he faces with Roma, Malik and the European authorities hot on his heels.

Don 2 is a genre that has rarely been successfully implemented in Bollywood. It’s slick, explosive and finely crafted with action sequences hardly ever seen before on the Indian screen. Sure it is along the lines of The Bourne Identity and Mission Impossible series in some respects. but in its entirety it’s a completely original product. Technically, the film is awesome with a special mention to Jason West for his outstanding cinematography.

Farhan Akhtar, who returns to direction after nearly five years displays a solid grasp of the subject at hand never once digressing from the unfolding plot with unnecessary toilet humour or unwanted songs (in fact there’s just one song in the whole film which is entirely situational!).

All the characters are strong and believable and the best part is none of the protagonists or antagonists are entirely black or white. They’re all grey, which make them relatable on some level. What’s more the film ties in well with the first part (and I’d definitely recommend you watch it first as there are quite a few references to it), making it a proper sequel, and not really a standalone film like say Dhoom 2 or Murder 2. And, it’s one of those rare sequels that’s better than its predecessor in almost every respect.

The action sequences are mind blowing and don’t come across as fake or forced into the plot – and thankfully we’re spared ridiculous situations where the hero’s shirt rips open and he goes on a killing rampage. The 3D compliments the film too and is impressively done for an Indian film.

Shah Rukh Khan is in fine form as the wily Don and makes a fabulous villain. His wit and one-liners are deliciously wicked and he makes a dark character extremely likeable with his convincing portrayal. Priyanka Chopra is good in whatever little she has to do and kicks some serious butt in the climax, but she should have been given more footage given her equation with the lead character. Her relationship and flirtatious interactions with Don though, are interesting and her chemistry with Shah Rukh is quite electric. Boman Irani is a class apart and stands tall as Vardhaan – in fact it’d be safe to say that the film rests entirely on his and Shah Rukh’s shoulders. Om Puri is adequate as Malik and Lara Dutta and Kunal Kapoor are just about okay. Saahil Shroff is handsome but his act isn’t really anything to write home about. By now, the cat’s already out of the bag, and yes, Hrithik Roshan does indeed have a cameo in the film. He is dapper and dashing as usual, but his appearance isn’t entirely justified and nor is he properly utilized, which is about the only minor hitch with Don 2. His character doesn’t really interrupt the flow of the plot in any way though so that’s a bonus.

All in all Don 2 is a smashing finale to an already interesting line up of films released this year. It’s a slickly edited, edge of the seat, cool, sassy and well made product with a gripping plot to boot. Here’s hoping they decide to make a third installment as there’s definitely potential to explore more of Don’s wicked antics, watch him outwit the good guys again and recite his by now (in)famous line ‘Don ko pakadna mushkil hi nahi…’

There had been whispers in trade circles as to who would be playing the lead role in the remake of Agneepath ever since it was announced by Dharma Productions. Abhishek Bachchan seemed like the most natural choice, seeing as Amitabh Bachchan had wowed critics with his national award winning act in the same role a couple of decades ago. However, in a surprise twist Karan Johar confirmed that it is in fact Hrithik Roshan who will be playing the sought after role in the 2011 remake, and not Abhishek.

When quizzed about his decision, Karan remained evasive and insisted that the principal cast had been decided by director Siddharth Malhotra — who co-incidentally seems to be making a career out of directing remakes (Malhotra directed the remake of Stepmom for Dharma earlier this year).

“I think Siddharth has his own ideas on how to present the character. I think the protagonist in the new Agneepath would be very different from how he was in the original” said Karan recently.

The female lead will be played by Priyanka Chopra — a part enacted by Maadhvi in the original.

The script for the new Agneepath has been revised bringing it more in line with present day. Chopra won’t play a nurse and Mithun Chakraborty’s character from the original has been completely scrapped.

Remakes and sequels seem to be the order of the day in B-Town at present — let’s hope this remake lives up the original and Roshan adds his own little spin to the dark, angst ridden character Vijay Dinanath Chauhan — a role immortalised by Bachchan senior.

Harman Baweja and Kareena Kapoor were adjudged the worst actor and actress respectively for their films What’s Your Rashee? and Kambakkht Ishq at the Golden Kela awards recently. The Kela awards, which have been running for two years, are Bollywood’s equivalent to the Hollywood Razzies which celebrate the best of the worst in cinema.

Kambakkht Ishq, panned by both audiences and critics last year, also won the award for worst film along with the ‘Bawara Ho Gaya Hai Ke Award’ (Have you lost it Award) for its other stars Sylvester Stallone and Denise Richards.

Ashutosh Gowarikar, the man behind classics like Lagaan and to a lesser extent Jodhaa Akbar won in the worst director category for his film What’s Your Rashee?, while Abhishek Bachchan was awarded an ‘honour’ for his put on accent in last year’s Dehli 6 — a fact that he sportingly tweeted about too:

“Another milestone in my career. I won the golden kela award 4 worst accent in Delhi 6. Chalo at least Delhi 6 won something. I’m overjoyed!!”

The Warner Bros — Nikhil Advani turkey Chandni Chowk to China was the other big winner of the evening with its cast Ranvir Shorey and Deepika Padukone taking the awards for worst supporting actor/actress.

With nearly 300,000 votes, the so called winners were picked through an online poll conducted through http://www.goldenkela.com. Unsurprisingly, none of the winners or nominees showed up to the event!

List of winners:

Boney Kapoor must be ruing the day he decided to cast Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor in the same film. His Milenge Milenge has been knee deep in trouble since it began filming way back in 2004. Initially there were some financial problems, then Salman Khan, who was to make a cameo in it walked out after he had a verbal spat with Shahid. The film was to then release in 2008 (some promos were aired too), but shortly after the success of Jab We Met, Shahid and Kareena who were dating for several years, broke up and refused to dub for the production further stalling its release date.

The film was all set to see the light of day in June this year. However, this Satish Kaushik directed venture seems to have suffered another minor set back after Shahid met Boney and asked him to postpone the release of the film further to avoid it clashing with his other two films – Aditya Chopra’s Badmaash Company and the kiddie flick Paathshala.

Boney has also decided to avoid any potential friction or awkwardness between his lead pair, by insisting that they don’t promote the film together, but rather, individually and at separate events. He feels it is for the betterment of the film — his reasoning being that they will get twice the amount of publicity for it than if the pair promoted the film jointly.

Shahid who has since moved on to become a big star is still quite gung ho about the film even if it has been lying in the cans for nearly six years.

“Yes, I’ll do everything I can to promote it. Of course I’ll do everything in my power to see the film gets properly released. It’s my film,” he said.

Boney Kapoor too remains optimistic about the venture and feels that Shahid and Kareena look great together and the the film still looks fresh.

Here’s hoping for their sake that the film eventually manages to see the light of day and that it does well too.

Talks are also on with Irrfan Khan to play one of the other husbands in this already interesting project which seems to have piqued movie going audiences’ interest.

Based on a short story and written by author Ruskin Bond and Bharadwaj himself, the film revolves around Chopra’s character and her relationship with seven men all of whom she ends up killing. As per reports the film also stars Mohanlal, Naseeruddin Shah, John Abraham and Arshad Warsi.

However the latest ‘dope’ on the film is that Bipasha Basu has bagged the coveted role of a glamorous junkie – said to be inspired by Zeenat Aman’s character in the classic Hare Rama Hare Krishna.

The Goan crime thriller rolls in a fortnight and also stars Abhishek Bachchan, Pratik and Aditya Pancholi.

Hot on the heels of Priyanka Chopra’s big win at the prestigious National Awards earlier this week, archrival Katrina Kaif too is yearning to be recognised as an ‘actress of substance’ and win the coveted award.

Sources on the set of her upcoming film Raajneeti say, “Katrina is very keen on winning a National Award. She doesn’t seem to hanker after the rest of the awards, but yes, on the sets she often mentions that winning the National Award would mean the world to her.”

She’s placing her bets on this political drama to turn the tide in her favour. Boasting of a super talented cast comprising of Nana Patekar, Naseerudin Shah, Ajay Devgan, Arjun Rampal, Manoj Bajpai and Ranbir Kapoor – with whom she’s already notched up a huge hit in 2009, the film’s trailer released earlier this month to an extremely positive response and looks set to be on every cine goers ‘must watch’ list this year. Kaif seems all the more hopeful since she is the solo female lead of the film and it sees her in a completely different avatar — that of a saree clad politician (supposedly based on Sonia Gandhi — although both the makers and the actress herself have denied this).

Not willing to take any chances, Katrina is rumoured to have slashed her price and even requested the film’s director Prakash Jha to give her role more prominence so that she can share screen space with the film’s other National Award winner Devgan. Whether she proves her mettle or gets lost amidst a sea of talented actors remains to be seen — guess we’ll find out when the film releases in May this year.
