Aishwarya has previously appeared on her show in 2005 and 2009. Abhishek also accompanied her during the second appearance.

Katrina will be working on the schedule of Yash Raj Production’s Ek Tha Tiger which will see her reuniting with Salman Khan. This Kabir Khan directorial venture is slated to release in June 2012 during Eid and has been listed as one of the most anticipated movies of 2012.

The much delayed sequel of Dostana will finally see the light after few pre-production meetings where Katrina will be seen opposite Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham. She has previously worked with both of them in Sarkar and New York respectively.

Yash Chopra’s much anticipate directorial venture will go on floors from February where she will be seen romancing Shah Rukh Khan. This movie is speculated to be released around Diwali 2012. Katrina has quoted, ‘It’s a dream to be cast in a film that Yashji is directing. In a way it brings me into the league of some of the most beautiful and iconic female actors we’ve had so far. Not everyone gets a chance to work with a legend like him’.

Then from April onwards she will move onto work on her other Yash Raj production, Dhoom 3 opposite Aamir Khan. An interesting trend to be noted in these sequels is the casting. Mostly the director, music composers and lead actors are retained while the lead actresses are mostly replaced with newer and fresher faces.

Neha Dhupia coincidentally featured in three films (Shootout at Lokhandwala, Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local and Kyaa Kool Hai Hum) for which sequels have been announced. She was recently quoted saying, “I don’t know why women are dropped from sequels. It is a male dominated industry and it is entirely upto the director who he wants in the film. But I am glad that most of the films I did are being made into sequels. These films had left a mark, hence they are made into sequels and it feels great to be part of the first part.”

Producers want to rake in the cash based on the loyal fanbase of the earlier hits and they feel that adding a fresh face to the cast will add an extra value to the sequels. It is a model that almost all production houses are now following as it offers lower risk and also helps in keeping the film alive in audience memory as soon as it is announced. It is perfect marketing gimmick as well even when the sequel has very little to connect with the earlier film for instance Murder 2 or Raaz 2 did not take their predecessors’ stories forward.

Few actresses that have been retained for the sequels are Priyanka Chopra for Don 2, Kareena Kapoor for Golmaal series and Sonakshi Sinha for Dabbangg 2.

Katrina Kaif has replaced Priyanka Chopra in Dostana 2 which is quite justified since Priyanka walks away with Bobby Deol in Dostana 1 (2008). Bipasha Basu and Sarah Jane Dias have replaced Neha Dhupia and Eesha Koppikarr in Kyaa Super Kool Hai Hum. Kangana Ranaut has replaced Vidya Balan in Ishqiya. Deepika Padukone and Ameesha Patel have replaced Bipasha Basu and Katrina Kaif in Race 2.

Some of the actors who have lost on the sequels include Ajay Devgn in Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai and rightly so since his character dies in the end. Abhay Deol will be replaced by Vivek Oberoi in Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local tentatively titled as Gyarah Chalis Ki Last Metro the shooting for which will take place in Delhi.

This movie is a biggie in the kitty of both Imran and Anushka who are currently riding on the success of their previous hits. Anushka is thrilled as she will be portraying a dramatically different role of a psycho chick in this urban comedy.

She admitted that after Band Baaja Baraat she made a wish-list of 10 directors she wanted to work with and she considers herself lucky and grateful to Vishal for believing in her.

The casting and the subject of the movie offers novelty and it will be really interesting to see both Imran and Anushka coming together in this comic riot. Both Imran and Anushka have proved their comic timing mettle in their earlier films Delhi Belly and Band Baaja Baraat respectively.

Vishal Bharadwaj has a reputation for bringing out the best from his cast be it Saif’s impeccable Langda Tyagi act (Omkara) or Shahid’s incredibly contrasting double role (Kaminey) or Priyanka as haunting Susannna (7 Khoon Maaf).

The practicality of the inheritance of the title can be gauged from the fact that it is more of a ceremonial right where the eldest son of the family takes over the right of the household upon the demise of the father. A pagdi (turban) is tied to the head of the son and the mother gives blessings to take the legacy of the household forward.

There have been various sectors that have been objecting why the title has been conferred to Saif since the titles were abolished by the erstwhile Prime Minister of India, Mrs Indira Gandhi. Saif in a statement said, ‘Princely titles no longer exist..but family values and tradition do..I shall be conscious of this always and do the best I can for Pataudi’. He has also categorically denied any political ambitions and has stated that he is not keen to flaunt his title and plans to carry on the responsibility and live up to his father’s memory and name. He has also chosen not to prefix the title with his name.

The actor reportedly has future plans for the Pataudi estate and charitable trust. He has vowed to work towards the refurbishment of the palace a part of which is now a heritage resort. He is also keen to maintain the charitable eye hospital that his father had started. He has said that his father was not in a position to do it financially ever since the privy purses were taken away post the abolishment of royal titles. It is now his dream to do it as a tribute to his late father.

He also plans to work extra hard, as he is keen for his two kids, Sarah and Ibrahim, to follow the family tradition and study in a prestigious university in England. He is also in excellent shape and has cut down on drinking and smoking post a minor heart attack in 2007 at a mere age of 36.

Saif in his 40s is in the most exciting phase of his career. In 2009, he started his flagship production banner under the name – Illuminati Films. He hopes to act and produce some money churners that will help him fulfil his father’s dreams. Two upcoming projects by this banner are currently in pipeline. Agent Vinod (2012), an action thriller on the lines of Bond series, to be directed by Sriram Raghvan who earlier directed Saif in a negative shade in Ek Haseena Thi (2004). And Cocktail (2012), a romantic comedy written by Imtiaz Ali and directed by Homi Adjania, who earlier directed Saif in a parallel film Being Cyrus (2006)

Indian film industry has been a male dominated industry and leading actors have a larger shelf life than those of leading actresses. There is usually a huge age gap between the lead actors and newly launched debutant actresses. However, the reverse trend is mostly rejected (Rani-Shahid in Dil Bole Hadippa). Thanks to television reality shows we still get to see our favourite actresses, but we hardly get to see them in a mainstream movie.

Amitabh Bachchan has been a glaring example of one personality who has defeated the established norms of the industry. At this age also he gets to feature in character roles specifically written for him (Paa, Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baap, Baghban). The revolutionizing ‘character role’ has revived the way our films are now written and this very fact combined with the challenging directors has opened a path for actresses to make an exciting comeback.

What needs to be really underlined in this positive trend is the fact that most of these actresses – Madhuri Dixit, Sridevi, Raveena Tandon, Karisma Kapur have all been widely appreciated award winning actresses of their times. Actresses of current times are mostly former models and they leave a void for a film requiring a challenging and path breaking performance. There is a niche area for performance oriented roles that has made the comeback possible.

Raveena Tandon, 37 was earlier seen as a reality TV. Her last release was Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baap (2011) where she even had a special song to her credit. She has been happily married and after having two children she feels she is now in a space where she can take up more work.

Madhuri Dixit, 44 has recently come back to Mumbai with few projects in her kitty. She earlier made an appearance in Aaja Nachle (2007) which was not a commercial success but her performance was widely appreciated. She was recently quoted saying, “Our society is changing and so are the attitudes of people. The subjects of our films have changed dramatically compared to 10 years ago. I feel there is a lot to do for actresses like me in the film industry. The audience tastes too have matured.”

The former leading actresses are looking ravishing and have well-toned bodies. Sridevi at 48 is now currently shooting for her upcoming comedy English Vinglish. Though she is quite nervous to face the camera after her last release Judaai (1997) she definitely is excited and looking mega bucks!

Karisma Kapur, 37 will be seen in a special appearance in Houesfull sequel and audience certainly cannot wait to see her dance moves yet again. She wowed us with her charm and dance skills in Dil To Paagal Hai (1997) for which she won National Award. She will be seen in a 3D horror film tentatively titled Dangerous Ishq. Karisma is firmly confident that age is no longer a barrier for an actress.

Kajol, 37 has also maintained a work-life balance and has taken time off to focus on her marriage and children. She has continued to portray performance oriented roles and her fans are always ready to see her onscreen.

Aishwarya Rai, 37 at the same age has been a great example for leading actresses. She has been the highest paid actress of her time and has continued to get meatier projects. It will be really interesting to see her making a comeback post her delivery.
