The Bollywood actress, who will be accompanied by husband Abhishek Bachchan, is the latest star added to the line up of high-profile presenters confirmed to appear at Twickenham Stadium, including Madonna, Jessica Chastain, Blake Lively, Freida Pinto, Zoe Saldana and James Franco.

International artist Beyonce is headlining the charity gig that will also see the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Florence and the Machine, Ellie Goulding, Rita Ora and HAIM perform at the concert.

All proceeds from the event will go towards Gucci’s Chime for Change charity. The initiative, which aims to raise funds for female empowerment, was founded by Beyonce Knowles, Salma Hayek-Pinault and Frida Gianini.

The Sound of Change concert is set to take place on June 1st at Twickenham Stadium, London.

Known for her love of vintage clothing Sonam Kapoor gave an ethnic look a vintage twist at The Great Gatsby screening. The actress opted for a delicate lace saree by designer Anamika Khanna and worked it with a matching heavily embroided cape-like jacket.

Saeed Awan went on to explain, “I created Nuksha as an international fashion hub. Meaning that no part of the world will ever be out of tune with where Asian fashion is at. So the UK and USA should never be behind Asian fashion in Pakistan, India or Dubai as they are the leaders. With 25 years experience working in the industry, Ana Singh began her career in 1989 working on the Salman Khan starrer Maine Pyar Kiya. Since then the costumier has gone on to work on 998 films including Khalnayak (1993); 1942: A Love Story (1994); Hum Apke Hai Kaun (1994); Bombay (1995); Border (1997); Refugee (2000); Khakee (2004); Omkara (2006) and Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai (2010).

Singh has also gained a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for her contribution to Indian cinema.

Notable achievement for Singh include winning two National Awards for her work on Taj Mahal and Umrao Jaan as well as receiving the Rajiv Gandhi Excellence Award for her contribution to fashion design and research on the movie Mission Kashmir. Singh has also received the Prime Minister’s Women Achievers Award, and has worked with leading Indian personalities, as well as international stars such as Michael Jackson and Will Smith.

The costumier has also designed for the International Film Federation Awards (IFFA) from 2003–07 in Amsterdam, Leeds, Dubai and Bangkok.

Further to her work in movies Singh was the official designer for the Miss India competition from 1994–99, and has created numerous wardrobes for Indian Miss World and Miss Universe winners. Singh was also the official designer for the 2010 Commonwealth Games opening and closing ceremonies, creating over 20,000 outfits depicting the rich and varied cultures, music and dance forms of the different states within India.

The first Bollywood film was released a century ago on 3rd May 1913; titled Raja Harishchandra the 40-minute long black and white silent film was based on the legend of King Harishchandra and is considered to mark the official start of the Indian film industry.

Producing an average of 1000+ feature films a year, which is twice the annual production of Hollywood, and with stars such as Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan who are all just as famous as their Hollywood counterparts in households around the world. Despite all of this annual revenues of Bollywood films are only a fraction at 10% of the $30 billion generated by Hollywood.

Bollywood actress Kajol, who has is an icon of Bollywood cinema, commented on Indian cinema surviving a century.

“The fact that our industry has not only survived, but has, in fact, thrived over the last century speaks volumes. I am grateful for the fact that I am here, at this time, and able to be even a small part of its fantastic accomplishments.”

The actress went on to say, “From the first black and white film to modern-day 3D cinema, we have certainly come a long way. Whether Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgan or even myself, we are known the world over due to the profession we are in – there is no corner of the world that Bollywood has not touched! And we have a 100 glorious years behind us to prove it.”

Marketing guru and managing partner of Counselage India, Suhel Seth, also commented on Indian cinema. “Bollywood has cast an indelible impression on the social mores, from our very psyche to its influence on consumerism in India and across the Indian Diaspora. This anniversary is not just 100 years of celebrating Indian Cinema… it is indeed a century of soft-power and the unabashed influence for the good that Indian cinema has had on audiences around the world”.

UK based soft power and communications expert, Farzana Baduel, points out Bollywood’s influence in promoting Indian culture. “Bollywood has played a vital role in promoting the country brand of India. With China and India rising on the world stage due to their increasing economic prowess, India stands apart due to the rich cultural offerings it shares with international audiences, not least through the emotional connections the global audience has forged with legends of Indian cinema.”

Hosted by Lord Sebastian Coe, the third annual awards ceremony saw the likes of Hollywood actor Sir Ben Kingsley, Peter Andre, Mitch Winehouse, Gurinder Chadha, James Caan, Beverley Knight, Princess Michael of Kent and Linda Lee Cadwell all grace the red carpet.

Paul Sagoo, founder of The Asian Awards, opened the ceremony followed by a speech by Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne MP who was full of praise for the awards and the outstanding achievements of the winners.

Speaking about the night Paul Sagoo said, “This year The Asian Awards has truly lived up to its name, celebrating global Asian achievement in what was a triumphant night.”

He went on to add, “We are honoured with the support of our guests and winners, like Sir Ben Kingsley, George Osborne MP, Jiang Jinquing and Linda Lee who joined us for this magnificent gathering of some of the world’s most inspirational and powerful people.”

Sir Ben Kingsley was honoured on the night, which saw the legendry actor receive a standing ovation as he collected the coveted Fellowship Award for his outstanding five-decade career in cinema.

On collecting his award Sir Ben Kingsley told the audience, “This fellowship means you are accepted in lots of other societies it is something that I am deeply grateful for and will spend the rest of my life reflecting […] thank you so much.”

Bollywood actor Anupam Kher received the award for Outstanding Achievement in Cinema. The actor who was not in attendance at the awards ceremony gave a pre-recorded message to the audience.

“I am truly humbled and honoured for being awarded The Asian Award for my work as an actor. As an actor all we do and want to do is make people laugh, cry, and persuade many other emotions by our craft [...] it is also an honour to be given this award the same year as Sir Ben Kingsley. Makes me feel very proud!”

Global icon Bruce Lee, who passed away in 1973, was honoured with the Founders Award for his impact and influence on western cinema. Lee’s widow, Linda Lee Cadwell attended to collect the honourable award.

The night also saw a special performance by singer Beverley Knight who surprised the audience with a duet with bhangra singer Shin from DCS, a charity auction and the launch of the Top 100 Most Influential Asians list, which highlights the world’s most influential Asians today.

We decided to have a quick chat to the London born model and actor, who is best known for his roles in 36 China Town and Namastey London, to find out what he has been up to since his last Bollywood film release, Run Bhola Run.

We are here at The Asian Awards; do you think it is important to hold such awards ceremonies here in the UK?

I think it is fantastic because when I used to be in the UK there was nothing like this around, I think it is great you can showcase and honour peoples talent. I think Asian’s are doing so well in different varieties of stuff, whether it is entertainment, sport, business and it is great to honour those people. It is such a huge and prestigious event. It is a great thing; it is my first time experience here so it should be good.

We haven’t seen you on the big screen for a year, can you tell us about any upcoming film projects you are working on?

I am doing a film called I, it is a Tamil film, starring me and Amy Jackson. We are currently doing that. We have been shooting that for one year hence why I have been unable to do any other films. I finish that film in September if it goes to schedule. Then I can start doing other films – I am contracted to only do that film.

Can you tell us more about the film?

It has got A. R. Rahman doing the music and Shankar is directing it. He did Robot with Aishwarya Rai and Rajinikanth. Vikram is also in there. We are shooting in China, Chennai. The special effects are by Peter Jackson’s company in New
Zealand, so it is a huge project. I can’t tell you anything else about the film. I can’t tell you my name, my character, what the story is about, what the film is about. Unfortunately I can’t, I would love to tell you!

What else have you been up to in the UK, apart from of course attending The Asian Awards?

I have just signed to an agency, Models 1. I just did a campaign today with a girl called Leah Weller. We shot for a British menswear design campaign today, which is really good.

Which designer?

His name is Peter Jeun Ho Tsang. It will be out soon, they are releasing the images in the Daily Mail next week so it will be out.

Finally, do you have a message for your fans?

I love you, I am coming back soon on screen, support me (laughs)

The show kicked off with singer Shaan who came on stage via the audience, singing 27 songs back to back his personality, humbleness and versatility came across. Speaking about the event the Bollywood singer said, “I loved the whole experience, I will treasure these moments for years to come”.

Next up was Bollywood beauty Bipasha Basu who performed all her iconic numbers including ‘Beedi’. The actress also brought on stage one lucky boy to dance with her to her hit ‘Lucky Boy’ from the film Bachna Ae Haseeno.   

Item girl Malaika Arora Khan performed spectacularly to hit songs including Munni Badnaam. Her presence, interaction with the Bolly Flex dancers and versatility was flawless, inspiring the audiences who wanted more! Speaking about the show the actress said, “I loved the whole experience, the dancers and choreographers in the UK where amazing, this was one of my best performances till day, I would love to do more tour with them”.

The headline performer of the night was Atif Aslam, who came on stage creating various beautiful moments interacting with the audience. The singer who is familiar with performing at London’s O2 delivered an unforgettable performance for audiences. Speaking about the event he said, “I loved London, I wanted to perform for 2 more hours, the energy in the room was mind blowing”.

Bolly Flex dancers performed throughout the night, and were seen either on stage with Malaika and Bipasha Basu or opening both half’s of the show with their dance moves.

Choreographer, Leena Patel spoke about her experience saying, “This tour was simply amazing, it was a rollercoaster of a ride but at the end of it, Bollywood Showstoppers became the dream production, all the stars and dancers performed impeccably”.    

The extravagant 2 nights, which was produced by Flex FX Productions saw over 12,000 people attend the O2 Arena on Sunday 7th April and more than 6,000 people attended the LG Arena, on Friday 5th April.

In between rehearsals the stars took some time out to speak to the media in London as part of a press conference. After the press conference we caught up with the beautiful Bipasha Basu for a quick chat about the show, her movies and staying fit.

You are going to be performing alongside your favourite singer Atif Aslam, which is your favourite song of his?
‘Kuch Is Tarah’, yeah I just love listening to that. And yes, ‘Pehli Nazar’ from my film, Race (laughs).

Which song are you most looking forward to performing as part of Bollywood Showstoppers?
I am looking forward to performing my most favourite song of my entire career that is ‘Beedi’ (Omkara). So that is something I am really looking forward to.

We have been avidly waiting for your Hollywood debut in the film Singularity, when is the film set to release?
Even I have no idea. We are working on the post-production because it is an epic war film; it is taking a long time in the post-production. Everything is done so now it’s all about the post and then we get the film.

For your Hollywood debut you are going to be seen alongside Josh Hartnett, which other Hollywood actor would you love to work with?
Brad Pitt for sure, I am very loyal to my choices and I have always been the biggest fan of Brad Pitt. It would be Brad Pitt for sure.

You tend to take on roles that are out of the box. What makes you go for different roles rather than the ‘normal’ roles Bollywood actresses take on?
I am a very regular girl, I come from a very regular family, I’ve never really changed. But my profession gives me the freedom to be somebody else, somebody that is not me and it’s quite exciting.

It’s only sad that in Bollywood we don’t write such strong, interesting in-depth roles for woman. We always treat them as accessories, we always treat them, as okay she has to dance and look pretty. We have to be with the hero, the hero has to save us. It’s a very typical strong stereotype I think all my contemporaries and me are apart of, but at the same time we want to fight against it and want to do something out of the box.

So I kind of keep on looking for roles that excite me that will want to bring me to set, because we all know that fine, you can look pretty, you can look good, but besides that when you are an actor there is always an urge to do something else.

As an actress who stars in many female centric roles, in films such as Corporate, why do you think female centric roles have come back into fashion now with the popularity of films such as The Dirty Picture?
It has not come back, it is just a phase, every time we did a Corporate or a Jism or any of my films which were steered by a woman, it was always said ok it’s great times for women but on and off these films come and go. There will be one Chameli, one Aitraaz, there will be one Corporate, one Jism. It just comes and goes.

Dirty Picture and Kahaani came back to back and I think it is wonderful for Vidya as an actor. She had a lot of struggle, but she has had it pretty good now because people are writing roles for her but the rest of the contemporaries are still in the same place. It’s not that every single actress is getting the super fab roles. We are still looking pretty, wearing great clothes, and looking sexy and glamorous. That is what we are known for. It’s not bad but it is not something that is going to keep you here forever and ever, it’s something that is just very momentary.

You are known as a fitness enthusiast, why is keeping fit important to you?
I think if you are not fit you are not going to really enjoy anything in life. You are not going to enjoy your career, the money that you make or the fame that you have. If you have no health there is absolutely no point in living. It is absolutely pointless.

As someone who has a number of fitness DVD’s out, what main tips would you give for keeping fit?
The important thing is that you have to love yourself. If you don’t value the body that you are born with it’s actually kind of difficult to teach people how to start getting fit.

People have to understand the difference between fit and thin. It is very important because generally most of the women, you know, they just don’t want to understand that there is something which is called being fit and there is something called being thin. And people take on too many shortcut practices just to become thin. So I am trying to preach and talk about fitness mostly and I don’t talk about anything that is a short cut. You cannot get fit in a week it is not possible. You can do crash causes, crash diets and you can become unhealthy and skinny, but that is not what I preach. It is very important to know are you investing in your health the right way or not?

I believe you need to keep yourself active because nowadays jobs are very sedentary. You could do anything, play a sport go to the gym, swim, do anything, yoga, there is so much to choose from, Pilates, do my DVDs (laughs), anything. Anything, something for yourself.

Finally, you have a great eye for fashion what does fashion mean to you?
I guess I have been a model so fashion is definitely something I am very interested in.

In terms of when you are talking about being apart of the film industry nowadays there is a very thin line between fashion and films. You are kind of being role models to so many people. So you have to be a little bit up to date. We have fantastic stylists and designers in our country and we are very open to international designers now. Fashion is something that is a very imperative part of our business, but for me as a person it is more about comfort, and it is about suiting your personality. Like I really don’t care about the fashion police, they can say ‘Bipasha wears very fitted dresses because she has a good body’, I am going to continue wearing them, it doesn’t matter I am not going to change!

Before the popular gig at the LG Arena, Birmingham Friday, Atif Aslam, Shaan, Malaika Arora Khan, Bipasha Basu and Flex FX’s artistic director, Naz Choudhury took time out of their rehearsals to have a press conference and special Q&A with the London media to talk about their upcoming show. Bollyspice.com attended the Q&A, on Thursday 5th April, to get all the details.

Hosted by the BBC Asian Networks, Tommy Sandhu and held in Chak 89 the press conference kicked off with Naz Choudhury explaining just how he got the stars on board for the show.

“For the past two/ three years we have been working with Atif who has successfully done our shows and we are really happy to bring him back now. With Bipasha, this is the first time we are working together. She is really hardworking, had a great experience in India, we hope in the UK we can too. With Shaan, I worked with him a few years ago in the BBC proms and since then, just his humble personality we really wanted to bring them together. And Malaika suits us as well because she is one of the biggest inspirations for dancers across the world and for us to have her is a huge honour.”

The artistic director further added, “When I put together Bollywood Showstoppers we wanted to come up with something that would suit our personality. We are still a dance company and we have turned into a production company.”

Bipasha Basu told the media how it feels to be performing in the UK saying,
“Well I have performed here before in the UK, but it has been long. I have been wanting to come back here and perform for a long time. Thankfully for Naz and his team, they came with this amazing offer that I could come back to UK and perform with my favourite audience.”

The actress went on to say, “The UK has supported me a lot, the kind of fan following I have is amazing, the support has been fantastic over the years. It was new this time because it was a different kind of choreography, the team was different, it was very fresh.”

Bipasha added, “Right now I am sitting between these two really talented men, Shaan and Atif, they are incredible singers, huge bundle of talent. So to be in a show that has got an interesting mix of talent, with singing and dancing and performance and entertainment, I think it was a show I could not say no to and that is why we are here. We are looking forward to Birmingham and the London show, and excited to see the turnout and enjoy the work we have done and the way we have put the show together.

Atif Aslam spoke about what it feels like to be performing in the UK once again.
“This is the second time I will be performing here in the O2. I am in love with the O2. Manchester and Birmingham, you guys have been fantastic as well over the years. Performing with such big stars this time around I am really excited.”

The singer shared how he “always looks forward to” performing with Shaan and revealed he is “planning on bringing Bipasha on stage” whilst he performs one of his songs.

He also revealed that he is a fan of Malaika Arora adding, “I have always been a fan of Malaika Arora, so I am looking forward to it as a fan. I wish all you guys the best and really want my fans to enjoy it.”

Malaika Arora Khan was the next to speak about her excitement of being apart of Bollywood Showstoppers. “Well I am really glad that I can be part of Naz and his troop, Flex. Thanks for getting us here, it was definitely an opportunity I didn’t want to say no to. It has been ages since I performed in the UK and it is always a pleasure to be back.”

The Munni Badnaam girl went on to add how she is looking forward to performing at the prestigious O2 Arena. “I am really looking forward to performing in London because we are going to be performing in the O2 arena, which is a big thing on itself. The last time I was there I had come to see someone perform, so to actually be on that stage I think for me is amazing. It is really going to be exciting.”

Malaika Arora Khan subsequently revealed to the media the act she saw at the O2 arena was Justin Bieber, who she had come to see with her son.

Ending the press conference singer Shaan spoke about performing at the O2 arena saying, “O2 is a great venue to be performing at and it is the first time for me. This is especially special because of the line-up we have. I have performed with Atif in Dubai, for New Years show, which was fantastic. This one is going to be much more. I think what is nice is that there is something new and something we have already done before.”

The press conference ended with a few questions put to the stars via the audience. Bipasha Basu was asked about what can be done to bring an end to the boundaries between India and Pakistan.

“Well ,sir, I think we as creative people we genuinely don’t keep any boundaries as such. We have tremendous fan following in Pakistan, although I have never been to Pakistan I would love to go there. Our films are watched there similarly.”

The actress further added, “I have to say I am the biggest fan of Atif Aslam ever, I have never said this. Constantly I listen to Atif songs every day. In that way when we talk about creativity there is absolutely no boundary, it doesn’t matter where you come from, you touch hearts for the work that you do. That’s what we do and that’s how we are to try and resolve the things and the boundaries between two countries, and I guess Atif would say the same thing because the kind of jobs that we do we do it from our heart and nothing else.”

The Q&A ended on a fashionable note with the media asking the leading ladies about the styling of Bollywood Showstoppers.

Speaking about the styling of the show Bipasha Basu told the media, “It is very important when you come on stage, whether you are a man or a woman, to present yourself well. Especially because we are from the film industry, we are all performers; we need to present ourselves the way people like seeing us. So we definitely do the job that we are meant to do.”

“Definitely we put a thought process to what we are going to wear, in terms of the kind of choreography that we have, the kind of act that is prepared for us. For me there is definitely one strong western look and one Indian.”

Malaika Arora added, “I pretty much second that. For me the live shows are always very exciting, it’s a lot of fun. For me what I wear has to reflect the kind of person that I am and what I will be doing on stage. It has to be presentable, it has to be as glitzy and as blingy as possible because that is what I like, and I think that is what looks good on stage.”

The actress and item girl mentioned a bit about her looks for the show saying, “I pretty much have an Indian look and a fusion look that I am doing. For me dressing up on stage doesn’t compare to anything that is the most fun. You can really experiment, you can go all out, be crazy be fun, be wacky. Whatever it is on stage, you can really be yourself out there. So yeah I am really looking forward to it.”
