The December incident of Gangrape in Delhi caused a thought stirring revolt in the country. A short film titled ‘Maya’ has been based on the incident and this film has now made it to the short film category of the Cannes festival.

The people who have made the film are three media professionals who are also friends. Anmol Karnik has directed the film and the other two professionals are Saloni Choujar and Sanjeev Mallik. They have made their film by themselves, including arrangement of equipment, editing and even acting in the film. The incident touched them in such a way that they decided they should make a movie on the subject.

Karnik told the Times of India about making the film. “Everyone here in Mumbai was talking about the incident, discussing it and questioning the happenings. People were debating as to whether the victim was responsible for what happened, or how to perceive the situation. Sonali is playing the character Maya in the film, and we have tried to focus on the mental and physical torture that the victim has to go through. Sonali has done her research on the subject and has even spoken to therapists to know what goes on with the victim after she is subjected to rape,” he stated.

Anmol said that they took only a month to complete the film. “We started the filming in February and we were done by the end of March. We didn’t have the funding to hire actors and cast, so we acted in the movie ourselves. However, acting is not what I want to do,” grinned Anmol, who has a degree in filmmaking from Los Angeles. He has worked with some big banners like Warners Brothers and California Film Commission and also edited films for Greyg Helvey, the Oscar nominated short filmmaker.

Anmol feels that short films give new filmmakers a chance to showcase their talents. He said, “There are so many film festivals you can send your films to, and that helps in networking. Good work is always appreciated. Even if we don’t get paid for our work, our talent is appreciated.” Anmol is also planning to make a short film on the water crisis in Mumbai and other parts of India.

“We were just another bunch of people in the crowd disturbed by the incident and when we made the film, we never even thought about Cannes. But when the festival came up, we sent it and were delighted when we got selected!” said Anmol.

Priety Zinta is counting days to the release of her first production Ishkq in Paris, and says that the making of this film definitely was a challenge for her. The film’s release got delayed due to the ill health of Prem Raj Soni, who is the director of the film.

Preity excitedly said, “Making Ishkq in Paris was a hard task, since I was doing it from the scratch. The script of the film is an original script that Prem and I wrote in 8 months. It is no adaptation, but purely original. This has been a wonderful experience for me.”

Talking about her multitasking in making the film, Preity said,” I had a lot of work to do. Not only was I writing the script, I was also the producer and the lead actress. So I always had my hands full.”

This film is Preity’s comeback in the industry after a gap of 3 years, as she was last seen in Main Aur Mrs. Khanna for which she did the item number ‘Happening.’

“I took this break to concentrate on cricket and my team Kings XI Punjab and so as the owner of the team I had to look into everything. I was getting a lot of offers for films meanwhile but I was just rejecting them. But then I met Dalai Lama, who inspired me and encouraged me to go back to my acting career,” she stated.

Preity’s production venture introduces TV actor Rhehan Malliek and French actress Isabelle Adjani.

Her character in the film is named Ishkq. Ishkq in Paris will hit the screens on 24th May.

There have been recent reports about the real Gulaab Gang leader Sampat Pal being miffed with the filmmakers of Gulaab Gang as they didn’t take her permission to make the film based on her, but now Anubhav Sinha has cleared the air and said that the movie is not based on anyone.

“Gulaab Gang is fiction. It is not based on anyone’s life. Yes, there may be some similarities like the colour, but it is not a documentary on Sampat Pal and her life. People are thinking that way because of the similarity in the name,” he stated.

Anubhav told the Times of India, ”My director Soumik Sen told me the story while I was in Banaras, and I loved the story. I knew this film will not be easy to put together, since we have no male protagonist and there are action scenes as well as dance sequences. Also, I was well aware that I will have a problem generating money and I went through struggle. But eventually, I enjoyed making this film.”

The director-turned-producer is bringing the two Bollywood divas Juhi Chawla and Madhuri Dixit together on screen. He said that Juhi was surprised to receive the offer at first. “Juhi said that no one had come to her with a film and a story like this before. She took about three meetings to finally say yes,” he said. Talking about Madhuri, Anubhav said that Soumik had met her before narrating the script to him so he already had her in mind.

Anubhav dreamed of being a producer for quite some time and he is very happy that he is turning producer with a film like Gulaab Gang. “Since 6 years, I wanted to become a producer and for so many reasons. One reason being that I have noticed the limited producers in our industry and sometimes, films with interesting scripts also don’t get enough financial attention. Secondly. Ra.One took 5 years and I was exhausted by the end of it,” he added.

Reportedly, Anubhav has 3 scripts under his production that he is doing. He is aiming at a 2013 release for his film Warning and he is also producing Zid.

And now, he will apparently do a cameo in Hasee Toh Phasee. He is producing this film in association with Anurag Kashyap.

Reportedly, Karan will also be seen in a role with shades of grey in Bombay Velvet. He now has a good connection with Anurag after doing Bombay Talkies together.

Times of India confirmed the news and sources said that Karan will be doing the role of Khambata, a Parsi industrialist. “Karan is perfect for the role since he will be able to play the part of a Parsi industrialist. His role is directly conflicting with Ranbir’s role, who is the lead of the film. That will make the film even more interesting,” added the sources.

A channel recently ran a programme about Salman Khan’s criminal case of 2002, where his vehicle rammed into the steps of a bakery in Bandra, killing one person and injuring a few. However, the channel bore the brunt of this, as Salman filed a case of defamation against the channel.

Following this, the channel decided not to telecast the objectionable content, as the High Court, after accepting lawyer Neville Deboo’s undertaking, that the channel will not telecast anything within the allegations made by the actor, adjourned the reply of the plea to June 25.

The High Court first restrained the repeat telecast of the programme and on the following day, asked the advocate for the channel to explain the basis on which the allegations were made. The order said, “The allegations are more on the fact that fake doctors and medical reports are produced by the Mumbai Police as witnesses, to which again he has no answer and seeks time to file an Affidavit – in- Reply.’”

Preity Zinta’s much awaited Ishkq in Paris, which was to release in 2012, is now finally releasing on 24th May. The delay in the release was due to her director Prem Raj’s ill health.

“There was no other reason to delay the release. Prem was very sick and he had a surgery. He is not just a director for me but a very close friend too. I would not release the film without him. You cannot always take decisions commercially, they have to be human decisions too,” she stated.

Although the delay did affect her financially, Preity said she could afford it. Also, there had been rumours about the film not having buyers. Clearing the air about these reports, Preity said,” I never pay heed to such rumours. The only way I can prove myself is by doing good work and I focus on that. I will be producing again and do better work.”

She also expressed her delight about Ishkq in Paris being a solo release. “Every producer aims at a solo release. It is a part of your planning as a producer and I am so happy about this,” she grinned.

Talking about the promotions and publicity of the film, Preity said that they are planning city tours and other creative ideas. But she is not sure of Salman Khan’s involvement in the promotions. “Salman is in the film but he is not the main character,” she added.

Directed by Prem Raj, the film features Rhehan Malliek and Isabelle Adjani. Here is the theatrical promo of the film for all you Bolly lovers!

Dibakar Banerjee is one of the four directors who are putting together their short films to make Bombay Talkies, and he says that his part of the film could not have happened without Ranbir Kapoor. “Ranbir is totally associated with the film and is in every frame of it. He is like a shadow of God to this average man. Without him, I couldn’t have made the film,” he said.

His film has Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead role, and to that the director said that he wanted to work with Nawazuddin since Black Friday. “It was a lovely, spiritual experience for both of us,” he added.

He also spoke about Aamir Khan in the promotional song for the film, and said that it his presence will do the film good, since the film is a tribute to 100 years of Hindi Cinema and Aamir is definitely an important asset to the film fraternity. “Aamir is not in my movie or anyone’s movie, but in the promotional song. He has supported this project and we are thankful to him,” he said.

The Khosla Ka Ghosla director said that he has always been a loner, but a project like this has made him step out of that and work with other directors. However, Dibakar says that he is not paying tribute but has tried to capture the current filmmaking ways for the future’s aid. “I have made a film that I wanted to do so that when people watch it 10 years down the line, they will know how cinema is today. I am focussing on cinema today, and I think that is the best way of paying tribute,” he said.

Clearing the air about his film being a tearjerker, he said that it is an emotional film, but it is about success and failure. “It is a man who has one chance to succeed, and when he succeeds, you are surprised,” he said.
Dibakar went on to say that his films have succeeded because he has done exactly what he believed in. “My films succeed because I am being myself. I want to reach out to the audience and talk about our culture, problems and traditions,” he pointed out.

Talking about his segment in Bombay Talkies, Dibakar said that he was not competing with anyone. “Zoya, Karan and Anurag are fabulous at their work. Why would any of us compete with each other? Our short films are our own ideas and projects and nothing has influenced them, no competition. Eventually, Bombay Talkies is our project so it equally important to all of us,” he said.

Bombay Talkies will hit the theatres on May 3rd. It has also recently been selected as the Indian entry for the Cannes Film Festival.
