The film is a culmination of some of the greatest moments of Bollywood taken from over 100 clips ranging from the black and white classics to Katrina’s Sheila and more. The documentary shows to those who are not in the know and the cool “we love Bollywood” club what it is all about. Director Shekar Kapoor put it best in an Hollywood Reporter interview earlier this week, “The audience (in Cannes) should see why over a billion people are having a love affair with this kind of cinema.”

It was a great night last night at the Red Carpet ))))))) I met Shekhar Kapur, who directed the film. I also saw on the red carpet Milind Suman where all woman were goggling at, plus met Anurag Kashyap, we hung out and spoke.

The screening was wonderful as well and the festival director even invited the audience to get up and dance!

Of course other films were screening as well and I hear Angelina Jolie has sold her directing debut In the Land of Blood and Honey about the Bosnian War. It seems she impressed GK Films Graham King who bought the rights to the film he praised Jolie’s talent in her first film saying that it ‘signals the arrival of a visceral and compelling storyteller’. We will have to wait and watch for that one!

I am wandering around the Marche and catching all the sights and the byways filled with everything you can think or and some you can’t. It is cool and we are so in the mind and the mood of what Cannes and the outer extreme Cannes can bring! Of course, we stop at a cafe because that is what you do in France and what do we see on TV, reports on Cannes.

Here is what happened on Day 3!

The red carpet today saw the premiere of Sleeping Beauty which stars Emily Browning, Michael Dorman, and Mirrah Foulkes.

Written and directed by newcomer Julia Leigh ‘Sleeping Beauty’ is about Lucy, a young University student who, to earn extra money for her tuition fees, is drawn into a mysterious hidden world of beauty and desire.

On hand for the film’s premiere were director Julia Leigh, Emily Browning, producer Jessica Brentnall and Rachael Blake. Rachel McAdams and Michael Sheen also attended, as did Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson.

Also making its Cannes debut is the much talked about We Need To Talk About Kevin, which went down very well after it’s early morning press screening, and the day ended with the film’s premiere.

Tilda Swinton has been universally praised for her performance and there are already whispers of her picking up this year’s award for best actress. She joined the cast, including John C. Reilly and Ezra Miller, at the Palais des Festivals for their premiere.

The American Ezra Miller (18 years) promises to be one of the revelations of the festival. His interpretation of the adolescent and brutal murderer of We Need to Talk About Kevin, has impressed the audience at Cannes … Like his ease on the red carpet!

You know what, I am loving the Cannes! Getting to see lots of movies and culture ))))))))) also sneek peaks ))))))))

Speaking of sneak peeks and I know you will all be jealous but I got to see the first look at the trailer into the upcoming Don 2! Forgive me but it was F*%$#ing MINDBLOWING !!!!!!!!!!!!! Very Very Very Big! Farhan is back and so is Don!

The trend in 2006 was that films that had high expectations generally did well, which isn’t always the case. The biggest money spinners were movies like Krrish, Lage Raho Munnabhai, Dhoom 2, Fanaa, and Rang De Basanti. At the same time, some off-beat and low budget films also became successful such as Gangster, Pyaar Ke Side Effects, Golmaal and not to mention the biggest shock of 2006, Vivah. With all these hits we also had some films that disappointed at the box office, but the quality of these films were enough to give them a firm position (Omkara, Dor, Umrao Jaan). Such an eventful year and so many rising stars, but unfortunately 2006 didn’t last forever. Eventually on January 1st, 2007 we had to bid farewell to the amazing year gone by and look forward to a new year. With such a great year behind us we only expected it to get brighter in 2007.

Well who knows about the “brighter” part, but we can clearly see that so far, after three months, 2007 seems to be a complete turnaround from 2006. The trend of 2007 is “expect the unexpected”. While in 2006 the expected money spinners actually did rake in a lot, in 2007 the movies expected to do well are doing poorly and the small/low budget movies are becoming successful. The trend first started with Mani Ratnam’s Guru being declared a super hit, which was unexpected as nobody thought Guru would be able to strike a chord at the box office since period films generally don’t do too well. Of course, everyone thought that if a movie like Guru can work at the box office, so can Salaam-e-Ishq which stars practically half of Bollywood (Try this: Pick 10 stars and you are guaranteed that two starred in SEI!). However, Bollywood ain’t that predictable. The movie bombed. Yes, that’s right. Despite having big names like Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra and John Abraham, the movie still failed and barely reached an “average” status. Not only was the movie rejected, but some may call it the most hated Bollywood movie ever. Even biased fans of the cast were disappointed, and that’s saying a lot.

The next major release was Eklavya, or at least that’s what it was called before it was released. Eventually, it became the second major failure of the year to join Salaam-e-Ishq. Again, big names like Amitabh Bachchan and Saif Ali Khan failed to get audiences into theatres. To maker matters more interesting, a low budget film titled Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. (which barely had expectations) is actually doing decent business and receiving a good word of mouth.

So far in 2007 there have been two films that can be called a success; Guru and Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. Who would’ve thought that an article would be written one day that states Guru has exceeded SEI and Honeymoon Travels is shining brighter than Eklavya. Our industry is truly the most unpredictable.

By the way things seem to be going, it seems like the small movies will bounce higher than the big films and emerge as winners. If you really think about it, this is a good thing because it’s high time we promote quality cinema in Bollywood rather than simply star quality. For how much longer will we make films like Don or Dhoom hits? If anything can help progress our society, it’s our cinema. So although 2007 may be a complete departure from 2006 it seems like it will benefit our industry more in the long run. At least, that’s what it seems like. For now, we must wait another 7 or 8 months to see what’s in store.

If 2003 introduced Priyanka, then 2004 established her position and made her a household name. With awards, fame and many movie offers, Priyanka stepped into 2005. Out of her six 2005 releases, Priyanka maintained a perfect balance with three hits and three flops. Blackmail, Karam and Yakeen were flops although Priyanka was noticed for the latter two. To make up for these three blunders, Priyanka had Waqt, Barsaat and Bluffmaster which were all successful to some extent. She was called the best part of Barsaat, overshadowing co-stars Bipasha Basu and Bobby Deol. By now, it was certain that Chopra was an A-league actress. In such a short time, Priyanka has become big competition for Bollywood’s biggest actresses who have been here for far longer than she has. In fact, it was Priyanka who replaced Aishwarya in Bluffmaster, not to mention Krrish.

Ignoring Aap Ki Khatir, 2006 was an even bigger year for Chopra as she had managed to bag the biggest films of the year. She appeared in the blockbuster Krrish and topped off the year by appearing in the highly successful film Don. She was at a whole new level now. But to all this glory there is one huge downslide. Priyanka may be a huge name in the industry now, but looking back at all her successful films one thought comes to mind; exactly what has she done? The bitter truth is that Priyanka is yet to live up to her career title as an “actress”. She may be apart of all these big-budget, successful films but is she a good actress? Movies like Andaaz and Aitraaz showed us tremendous potential, but when will we see that potential turn into something concrete? Films like Don, Krrish, Waqt, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, etc. are not going to get her anywhere as they are all dominated by another actor, leaving Priyanka to act as a mere prop. For instance, Don cannot be called Priyanka’s movie and neither can Krrish. Respectively, those movies did well because of Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan. Priyanka was neglected to the backseat and hardly showed any acting potential in these movies. In fact, looking at her upcoming movies, I’m sorry to say this looks like it might continue.

So, is Priyanka Chopra overrated? The answer is definitely a yes. Sure, she is in the exact same category as today’s super-actress trio (Aishwarya Rai, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukherjee), but has she delivered flawless and memorable performances as strong as the other actresses mentioned? Ash, Preity and Rani have all proven themselves in their decade long careers and along the way have had successful films. Mind you, in their successful films they actually have roles and are appreciated by critics. Being a superstar is not only about having successful films but you need to have the talent to survive in the industry…something Miss Chopra needs to learn. For instance, Miss Rai’s (our days of calling her “miss” are limited) last hit movie before Dhoom 2 was Devdas. A good five-year gap. The reason she survived was because of powerhouse performances like Raincoat and Umrao Jaan in the middle. Rani went through a flop-streak after Kuch Kuch Hota Hai but she ultimately arrived at Hum Tum because her talent was strong enough to survive the storm.

Will the storm be too much for Chopra? 2007 has already started on a bad note for her as Salaam-E-Ishq was terribly disappointing and termed a flop. Not to mention audiences despised her in the film and critics tore apart her performance, accusing Priyanka of “hamming” and “being fake”. Although people have praised her for one scene in the film, one scene isn’t going to get you anywhere. If she wants to survive and ascend in this fierce and competitive industry, she will have to step back, get choosy and sign challenging roles. Otherwise, Priyanka will be ringing cash registers with a weak buzz. If there is no soul in art then it shouldn’t be called art. Similarly, if acting is not present in an actress…then what is the point of being an actress? This isn’t a popularity contest, this is stage of talent. And if all you can bring to the stage is your status then something is wrong. Either Priyanka should reconsider her career choice or take a serious and more appropriate approach towards her lifeless and talentless career. It’s either now or never.
