14nov_readysteadygheeBBC Asian Network presenter Tommy Sandhu this morning announced Neeta Shah from Hertfordshire as winner of the BBC Asian Network’s BBC Children in Need competition – Ready Steady Ghee.

The competition was launched to help to raise money for BBC Children in Need, by offering the chance of winning a money-can’t-buy prize. It saw budding chefs across the country get involved by submitting a multitude of mouth-watering recipes with Michelin star potential.

After whittling the entries down to a shortlist of three dishes, Michelin star chef Atul Kochhar joined Asian Network presenter Tommy Sandhu live in studio during his daily show (6am-10am) to choose the winning dish.

Neeta’s winning recipe – Paisley Beetroot Ravioli – will now go on the menu at Atul’s Mayfair restaurant, Benares, until the end of the year. Proceeds from the sale of the dish will go to BBC Children in Need. And next Wednesday, Neeta will get to cook her recipe with Atul at Benares.

Atul said:
“I asked people to think outside the box with their recipes and to do something different. I wanted people to stay away from traditional recipes and to be adventurous. Neeta’s recipe for Paisley Beetroot Ravioli won the competition by miles; it was original and daring, it was nothing short of amazing.”

Khaliq Meer, Editor BBC Asian Network, said:
“A huge thanks to our listeners for getting stuck into the competition and creating lots of exciting and inventive recipes. Many congratulations to Neeta for producing an amazing dish that bowled Atul over, compelling him to add it to his menu in order to raise money for BBC Children in Need this year!”

Neeta said:
“I’m speechless. This is a mouth-watering, contemporary dish which will transport the taste buds of diners at Benares to exotic faraway places.”

He also mentioned, “It’s my goal to make martial arts compulsory for girls in school. In China, you have to do two years of martial arts training, without which you cannot get a graduation degree. There is so much violence and action in martial arts that when you come out in the world, your mind does not think of violence as it takes out all your anger. Therefore, I believe that countries with martial arts will be more peaceful and not as physically violent as others who don’t have it.”

13dec_DoonyaIntroducing Doonya: the first Bollywood fitness lifestyle brand for South Asians around the world. Led by New York-based Priya Pandya and Los Angeles based Kajal Desai, Doonya: The Bollywood Workout is a fitness program that takes Bollywood-inspired movements and connects them to your body’s muscles. With classes offered all over America, Doonya: The Bollywood Workout is also available as a 3-disc workout DVD. The brand also releases new workouts weekly on their YouTube channel, which has over one million views.

Doonya started as a dance school in Washington DC. As the company grew with branches in New York and Los Angeles, and after their infamous performance on The Oprah Winfrey Show dancing for Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan, Priya and Kajal noticed incredible transformations in their students’ bodies.

The duo studied fitness with the intention of creating a healthier, happier world (a “Doonya”).

“We wanted our program to be authentic and yet accessible,” says Kajal. “Doonya is based on moves we learned in our Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Yoga, folk and Bollywood classes. After studying fitness for years, we learned how to teach the movements we grew up with in a way that really change your body.”

“South Asians love to dance,” says Priya, “but working out isn’t something Desis are known for. With Diabetes, coronary artery disease and obesity as serious issues plaguing our community, we wanted to create a program that the people we love wouldwant to get up and do in the morning.”

“Doonya provides a workout that is fun for the entire family! You’ll dance to songs you recognize using moves you already know, but will do them in a way that gives you results. You can burn up to 800 calories per hour!” says Desai.

The Doonya program has also become a major social network for South Asians. In addition to the non-South Asian students, Doonya classes are full of young professionals who miss dancing; aunties who love to dance, but haven’t ever worked out; and, most interestingly, the newly arrived NRI who misses home.

Deepti Dahle has been coming to Doonya classes in New York for a year and a half. She moved to the U.S. after getting married with a visa that didn’t allow her to work and without much of a social circle. But, Deepti says, “Doonya changed my life in every way!”

She has lost and kept off 12 pounds, and has seen the major benefits that come from Doonya’s happy, healthy philosophy.

“I never thought I would love living in the U.S. Since joining classes, I’ve learned to be independent and travel alone – which is not easy when you move to a new country. I am focused on what and how much I eat. And I now have an amazing group of friends! Seeing them each class is like a reunion and makes me feel home.”

Doonya released its 3-disc DVD in February 2013 and is a top-rated fitness DVD on Amazon. Over the past year, Doonya has been heralded as a better, more intense version of Zumba and has been called “The happiest workout in New York City!”

This past fall, Doonya launched their first TV series with Zee TV Americas. Watch the first episode!

Flower power now exceeds beyond the confines of spring and summer wardrobes. Our Bollywood celebs have been embracing the floral trend letting the theme translate into their evening, casual, desi & western attires. Be it a Priyanka’s quirky ASOS floral suit for International Girl Child Day or Deepika’s rich Sabyasachi floral embroidery lehenga saree for the Ram-leela audio launch, the trend has crossed boundaries of seasons and has a landed a spot in every celeb wardrobe.

While floral prints are something that we’re accustomed to, Indian designers’ enthusiasm for Indian textiles and artistry has taken this latest style statement to a new level. One of Masaba’s 2013 collection saw pink rose embroideries accompany black/white rose prints. The designer took floral prints to a new level with this incorporation of print and embrodiery. Designers like Payal Pratap and Anupama Dayal brought together the trend of pastels and florals together in Indian attire. Then there were those who pushed the boundaries who took florals from the casual/chic arena to top end Indian couture. Bhairavi Jaikishen and Sabyasachi dared to make florals a part of bridal wear and struck gold with this leap.

designers

This year we’ve seen our celebrities embrace flower power in all its glory. The 90s divas jumped on board as we saw multiple sightings of Madhuri in florals on Jhalak Dikhla Ja, while Juhi made a appearance on the ramp for Yash Chopra’s Anniversary fashion show in a floral lehenga. Sridevi opted for floral prints for her b’day bash and Karishma continued her love affair with chiffon blouses in a floral print Dolce & Gabbana blouse. The one that came as the biggest surprise was Kajol’s Shantanu & Nikhil floral saree, which became an instant favourite for fashion columns across the platform.

90s

Film promotion events saw both Deepika and Kareena opting for florals at multiple occasions. While Kareena opted for the pop of floral color on black dresses, Deepika mixed it up with floral pencil skirts, summer dresses and then a rich Sabyasachi floral embroidery saree.

DeepKar

Sabyasachi’s floral print saree that Shraddha opted for for LFW came as a refreshing change to the ultra formal dos the designer’s muses tend to opt for. And whilst Taani, Parineeti & Bipasha’s choices weren’t much to write home about, they easily illustrated how adaptable the floral trend is for any event or occasion. The lady to really catch our attention was Priyanka Chopra who did an all-floral suit for a recent event. Not only was it eye catchy but it some how also kept in tact the formal/business feel that suits generally have despite the floral print.

other

The lady to have gone completely ga-ga over the fact that florals are taking over the many facets of fashion was Sonam Kapoor. From her appearance on the Cannes red carpet to small town movie promotion events, she seems to have ensured that her love for florals doesn’t go amiss anywhere. Sarees to anarkalis to ball gowns, it was florals all around for Sonam in 2013.

SONAM

What we’d like to see happening now is the men of B-town getting their florals right. This year we had only one winning sighting courtesy of Farhan Akhtar at a magazine launch. The man wowed us and how with his floral shirt and army green jacket. Sadly in the previous sightings of our men in florals has been the complete opposite to Farhan’s grand success. Adhyanan’s borrowing of Dad’s shirt for a festival in Goa was not a pretty sight for our poor eyes neither was Abhishek’s appearance in a floral shirt at an airport.

men

On our wish list now is for some of our other ladies to dabble in florals in their coming appearances i.e. we’d love to see Katrina give the boring solid colors a break and have some fun with floral prints. Perhaps we’ll get lucky during her Dhoom 3 promotion appearances. And while many of B-town guys have gotten the hang of mixing pastels with their attire, we’d love for some to take the next bold step and dare to wear florals. Farhan pulled his off effortlessly so there’s no doubt it can be done right. Salman Khan’s stylists on Bigg Boss 7 seem to be favouring bold prints so here’s hoping they give a winning floral look some time later this season. For now a word of advice for the guys who do want to dabble in florals, stay away from the big prints, go for the pastel and delicate/small prints and wisely pair it up with appropriate jackets/blazers.

Leave your comments on which celebrity you think has made the most of this latest fashion fad and which celebrities you wish to hop on the floral-bandwagon. Also don’t forget to share your thoughts on what you think of men who dare to be bold with florals.
