Four recent graduates (Nelson Sivalingam, Iram Zahid, Jaina Patel, and Kartik Bharadia) from London have come up with a delicious antidote for these two assumingly unrelated issues.

After forking out to eat in restaurants only to discover the food didn’t match up to Mum’s home cooking and frustrated from seeing talented women struggling to gain employment they decided to take matters into their own hands. The result – an innovative social enterprise by the name of Mummy’s Cooking!

Mummy’s Cooking is a culinary treat born out of passion for good homemade food and bringing the local community together. The focus is on helping women from vulnerable backgrounds and isolated communities to gain skills and employment through the medium of cooking. Many of these women have mastered cooking authentic, ethnic cuisines by cooking for their families but for reasons such as a lack of formal qualifications, confidence issues and language barriers they are unable to secure employment.

The process is designed to make the transition from home to professional kitchen as easy as possible for the women, with fully subsidised training and the opportunity to be mentored by a professional chef. Once the women are fully equipped, oozing with confidence and raring to go, Mummy’s Cooking provides them with employment. This in turn allows Londoners to eat delicious, authentic homemade food and meet the women at pop up events, market stalls and even at your wedding with the private catering option.

The four food lovers are keen to try as many Mums’ cooking as possible while building an ethical brand known for its quality food and community spirit. To get Mummy’s Cooking off the ground, they’re trying to raise money through the crowd-funding platform Sponsume.com. The funds from the campaign will be used to take this opportunity to the women who need it the most by working with women’s organisations, community groups and job centres and to get these women fully certified to work in commercial kitchens. It will also cover the costs of setting up the launch pop up and taking this exciting concept out into the market.

To get Mummy’s Cooking off the ground, the team is raising money through the crowd-funding platform Sponsume.com which you can check and contribute to at:

The UK and India’s leading social glitterati, dignitaries, charity ambassadors and veteran stars of Indian cinema, Waheeda Rehman, Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi, gathered on Saturday 2nd of March 2013 at Vinopolis in London to celebrate The Sparkle Ball – a glittering night of haute couture fashion to raise vital funds for The Akshaya Patra Foundation UK, the world’s largest NGO-run school meal programme, which feeds and educates some of India’s poorest, underprivileged childen. Other attendees included LN Mittal and family, the Chairman of The Akshaya Patra Foundation UK Harin Thaker, and the advisory board members, Yogesh Mehta, Prashant Jhawar, Nirmal Banthia, to name some.

The beautifully restored Victorian Arches of the Great Room at Vinopolis hosted 400 of the leading lights from the High Net Worth (HNW) Indian community in London and India. Renowned TV personality Konnie Huq oversaw proceedings as she hosted the night with her characteristic charm and humour. Proceedings began with a champagne reception followed by a gastronomic journey showcasing the best of Indian fusion cuisine.

A highlight of the prestigious event was the exclusive unveiling of celebrated Indian designer Anamika Khanna’s new Luxury 2013 collection. The Kolkata based fashionista, who has designed for Bollywood royalty Sonam Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra, has the notable honour of being the first designer from India to launch an international label, and is one of the first Indian designers to show at Paris Fashion Week. The distinguished guests were mesmerised by Anamika’s ravishing designs, which included traditional garments infused with modern touches to create a hybrid of striking pieces. Beautiful models sashayed down the catwalk to flashlights and hearty applause, as Anamika emerged at the end of the fashion show, to take her much deserved bow and meet members of the press eager to interview her.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation UK raised a staggering amount of funds via a special charity auction, which comprised of a range of bespoke items and memorable experiences such as front row seats and after-party tickets to this year’s party of the year, the Victoria Secrets Fashion Show, luxury breaks such as a two-night stay at the luxurious 51 Buckingham Gate in London, an Anamika Khanna couture outfit, and a dazzling pair of diamond and jade cufflinks donated by one of India’s most esteemed fine jewellery designers, Bina Goenka. The centre piece of the auction was the ‘Adopt a School’ appeal, where for £2,500 donors could sponsor school lunches in a single school for an entire year.

The successful event concluded with a special after-party in the Cellars of Vinopolis, where DJ Raj entertained guests until the early hours of the morning.

Speaking about The Sparkle Ball event in aid of The Akshaya Patra Foundation UK, the UK President Dipika Khaitan said: “We are thrilled at the success of this evening and were delighted by the VIP and celebrity turn out who pledged their support. It was a fantastic event in aid of such a very worthy cause and a good night was had by all. A highlight of the event was the magnificent fashion show by the talented Anamika Khanna, who amazed guests with her new Luxury 2013 collection of inspired and absolutely beautiful new creations. I’ve had very positive feedback about the fashion show, with guests loving the whole look, staging and theme of the show.

“The UK chapter of The Akshaya Patra Foundation has so far raised funds to provide meals in approximately 250 schools which is 75,000 children. The funds raised by peoples’ enormous generosity has been so beneficial in helping us to continue our vital work to feed and educate some of India’s poorest and deprived children. The Akshaya Patra Foundation often provides a lifeline for children to eat well, which in turn aids their educational development, which then can help them to achieve their full potential.

“My heartfelt gratitude to everyone who attended this event, and those who have and continue to support our vital work – it is very much appreciated.”

The Akshaya Patra Foundation is a leading charity pioneering a school lunch programme that addresses two of the most immediate challenges facing India: hunger/malnutrition and access to education. It is the first Indian NGO to have been selected for a case study by the Harvard Business School of USA. The organisation began in Bangalore with the ambit of feeding 1500 children in five schools. For many children it is their only complete meal of the day. This meal gives them an incentive to come to school, stay in school, and provides them with the necessary nutrients to develop cognitive abilities, enabling them to focus on learning. Ultimately, this aids in helping them to become self-sufficient and gainfully employed. The organisation has the impressive projection of feeding five million schoolchildren in India everyday by 2020. This essential work is partly funded by the Central Government of India, the respective state governments, corporates and benevolent individuals.

Today, The Akshaya Patra Foundation provides freshly prepared, nutritious meals daily to over 1.3 million underprivileged children in over 8000 schools in NINE states from 19 kitchens.

Among its many accolades, The Akshaya Patra Foundation has been named as one of the Top 100 NGOs in the world by The Global Journal in its 2013 edition titled “Top 100 NGOs Annual Ranking”. For the Annual Ranking, The Global Journal considered a pool of approximately 450 NGOs based on three key criteria: impact, innovation and sustainability. Akshaya Patra was listed in 23rd position alongside some extremely established and well-known NGOs such as Action Aid, MSF, and Path. The charity was first place in the ‘Children and Youth’ category.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation has an esteemed list of Trustees and Advisors in India, the UK and the USA, who advise and guide the charity’s operations on a daily basis. Some of its renowned supporters include: My Narayanmurthy, Deepak Chopra and Fareed Zakaria.

The international communications agency Sterling Media was proud to be the event’s official Event and PR partner.

As we have been reporting Huma Qureshi, along with producer Ekta Kapoor and actor Emraan Hashmi, are all set to visit the Maha Kumbh mela. There, they will promote their upcoming film, Ek Thi Daayan (ETD), and even perform a yagna during their three-day stay.

Huma says, “I’m very excited about going to Maha Kumbh, as the only reference I have of it is what I’ve seen in Hindi films in which parents, kids or siblings get lost and reunite years later. It was a classic formula used in our films earlier. I’m glad that because of ETD, I will be able to experience the congregation of over two crore Indians and travel to Allahabad, a place I haven’t been to. I’m looking forward to seeing the naga sadhus and aghoris.”

What does she think will be her reaction when she meets a naga sadhu? “That’s a cheeky question,” she laughs. “I haven’t experienced anything remotely occult, so everything on this trip will be new for me.”

Talking about her role in ETD, she says, “I play Emraan’s love interest. It’s a supernatural thriller in which he plays a magician. I am very excited about this script.” Huma also denies that Emraan’s presence in the film means that intimate scenes and kisses are inevitable. She says, “The kind of films Emraan’s doing right now are different from those that he has done earlier. As an actor, I think he’s finally getting his due. He’s a wonderful, hard working guy. It’s a fantastic script and nothing like a kiss is added due to his image.”

Ek Thi Dayaanm which also stars Konkona Sen Sharma and Kalki Koechlin hits theaters worldwide on April 18.

Known for his various romantic portrayals of Raj/Rahul and many others, this is the man of whom the Germans say ‘He gives us a button to cry’. To be able to entertain is one thing, but to be able to touch people’s hearts and make them cry is a totally different thing altogether.

In an emotional interview during the Tehelka ThinkFest conclave the 47-year old opens up about his parents, what he learned from them and reveals that he ‘acts to avoid depression’. It takes a lot of guts to put your self out there and SRK has done it many times. If you have followed Shah Rukh Khan’s life and career, you know this comes from the immense emotional baggage he carries with him: the loss of his parents and his sister begin unwell.

The actor has been working on an autobiography, which sketches his life from childhood to stardom, for awhile of years now. He is still in the process of writing. “The autobiography was to be called 20 years of a decade because I felt I had crammed 20 years into the decade. It’s now been 22 years and the book is still not complete.”

The autobiography reveals a side of Khan we do not know. At the ThinkFest he spoke about the chapter he wrote about his parents. “The exposure of my inner self is that I think my father is the most successful failure in the world. And I am proud of him. I remember him as a very gentle person. He taught me a lot of things. As years are going by I remember things he’s told me. Once, my father took me to show a cinema in Delhi. He did not have enough money, but he didn’t tell me. We sat near Kamati auditorium and he told me that it is wonderful to see the vehicles passing.” “I think I have imbibed the fear of failure that I have seen my father go through. And I didn’t want to fail like him. When I promise to take my son out for a movie I should be able to show him the movie and not the cars at a roundabout though that was fun too,” Shah Rukh added.

His parents made him the man he is today and their way of life is still significant and of huge influence in the way he approaches life and work. His father, Mir Taj Mohammed, was the youngest freedom fighter in terms of age, an idealist and lawyer by profession. But he never practiced the profession as ‘he could not lie”, says SRK. His mother was more practical. Both his parents believed that when your child is educated they’ll have a good life and that is exactly what they worked towards all their life. In fact, he feels the enthusiasm he has for film and to succeed comes from his mother. “She was a go-getter, very enthusiastic and had a lot of energy to earn money to educate us.”

Both parents died between the ages of 49-50 and “I just turned 47 the other day so that’s a bit scary thought”, he smiles. The time spend with his parents was an education on itself. “It was their education which makes me a very pragmatic practical poet. It makes me someone who has dreams like my father did. I am a believer, idealistic, utopian, thoughtful and gentle like my dad and I want to do all those things with a stomach full of food and have a good car and a good house. I don’t deride myself, when I say I am kind of a bit of a capitalist. Its just that I am a survivor who wants to live well and think well.”

He recalles the days when his father was sick. “My father died of cancer, liver and lung. The last few days he couldn’t speak, so we would play dumb charades or he would write stuff. He, obviously like any other, was in love with his daughter.” Khan remembers that when the body was brought home, they had not told his sister yet that their father had died.

When he brought his sister home from school she just collapsed at seeing the body. “My sister saw his body, looked at it and just collapsed and for the next two years she did not recover from the shock. She didn’t cry but she could not face the reality of our father’s death,” he said. “During DDLJ she was again hospitalized and they said she won’t survive. I took her to Switzerland and got her treatment while I was shooting for Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeh Jaana Sanam.” Unfortunately she has never fully recovered from the suddeness of his death, though she is doing much better.

And while she could not face the reality of the loss of her parents, Khan says he somehow developed a sense of detachment, “a sense of humour to cover up the sadness effecting my life and me becoming like my sister”. He went on to say, “I love my sister how she is. She is a much better person than I can ever be. I think she is a child of God and very naive and innocent. My kids love her more than they love me and my wife. And I very glad she is a part of my life like this.”

He goes on to add “A lot of things which are Bollywood-like or flamboyant in me are actually to cover up my emotions. I don’t have guts to be as simple. To avoid depression I act.” Shah Rukh said that 99 percent of the things, which he depicts in the films, are experiences of his life. “I think this is the most honest I have ever been in my life.”

We recently reported about a new book about glitter, 101+ Things To Do With Glitter. Bollyspice.com attended the book launch, which took place in the Hackney Attic, London on Tuesday 25th September.

Not only did we get to catch up with the author behind the book, Momtaz Begum-Hossain, but we also got to check out the Glitter Exhibition, as well as taking part in the craft classes that are held once a month in the Hackney Attic.

Craft expert, journalist and author of the book, Momtaz Begum-Hossain, told us about what made her write about glitter, tips for budding writers and of course Bollywood.

What inspired you to write about Glitter?

I think one of the things was I wanted to show people that you could get more things out of one material. Glitter for a long time has been used on Christmas cards; it is used by children at school. I have always felt there were so many things you could do with it so I wanted to broaden people’s minds and show you that you can take one thing and do so much with it. Whether that is glitter, ribbon, a simple button, a simple sequin, or a bead, there is just endless possibilities in making and crafting and I am all about making stuff. I don’t like this idea of you having to spend loads of money and buying something new everything you make something. You have got one thing and lets think what you can do with this one thing. In this case buy one pot of glitter, hundred uses.

Would you say your love for Bollywood helped inspire the book?

Bollywood has always been a massive influence to my work. When I watch a film it is not just about the stars and the stories and the big directors it is very much about the look and feel. The choreography of the sequences, the architecture, the beautiful sets and the costumes, those stunning sparkles, sequins, glitter. I love taking those inspirations and putting them in my work, so my first book I did was Bollywood Crafts and that was literally a celebration of Bollywood films. So I looked through films from the 50, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and took inspiration and showed how you had the retro era of films, we had Caravan, Bobby and I showed some craft projects that were directly inspired by those films. I took it through to 2000 and had like sci-fi Bollywood projects and I was just looking at the Bollywood inspiration in a different way. Because I have always liked making stuff and I love Bollywood it was this chance to put things together. And glitter is the same, its like you know if you are going to do something, do something you are passionate about, I am passionate about glitter and crafting so lets put them together!

Which is your favourite era for films?

My favourite era…I think a lot of stuff in the 2000s I have enjoyed, they have kind of affected me more emotionally, something like Kal Ho Na Ho will just make me cry from start to end. I just cannot ignore the factor that it does. I really like watching the brilliant woman, that were in the 60s and 70s films, the really powerful woman who are just kind of fighting and doing this and the other, the beautiful 60s hair and amazing makeup, I love that genre and I enjoy watching it, but at the end of the day a Salman Khan blockbuster will always do it for me (laughs). I am not elitist, I do like the popular films, I will admit it, but I have watched the black and white ones, some dodgy 90s ones, a few 80s ones and you know there are Bollywood films I like and Bollywood films I don’t like. I don’t like everything, I don’t really like the popularist slapstick comedies, Akshay star comedies, I am not a fan of those, but the melodramas, the big stories, the big dance numbers, the masala films, that’s my kind of thing.

Back to 101+ Things To Do With Glitter, which was your favourite project to try out from your book?

There are a lot of projects but I really like this veggie burger beanbag that I have got. It is actually made of glittery fabrics. When I was a kid, in the 80s, you used to get these hamburger beanbags and I just wanted one so badly and I never got one so it was my opportunity, now I am older and I make stuff to make my own. It is actually a footstool but it is layered, the lettuce is a layer, the cheese is a layer, the tomato is a layer, you can kind of stack it or have it flat. It is just this ridiculous idea, its just crazy and I love it (laughs).

Which project is ideal for beginners to try out first?

There are lots of beginner’s projects. One of the ones are the wedding gloves, you know henna designs that you put on your hands I wanted to take that and put henna on gloves. I have literally taken the gloves, I have got some glue, I put the glue in an icing tube and glued a henna design on. I literally put some fine glitter on and now you have got this glittery henna look on your gloves. Some of them, the paper craft ones are really simple, this button, literally take a button and put glitter on it. You can take buttons off your clothes, glitter them and sew them back on. There is simple customising of things that exist and then there is making stuff from scratch. Within this 101 there is stuff for all abilities. There are different craft techniques as well, there is paper making, then there is sewing, decoupage, which is putting collage stuff together, as well as getting inspiration, getting ideas but learning a few skills as well.

What makes 101+ Things To Do With Glitter different from other books out there?

My background is in crafts and craft books, magazines and I have seen a lot of craft books, but I have never seen one that celebrates the material and I think that is what makes it special. It is very fun, very pink, very girly, there is no denying that this is a book for girls, and I think lets embrace that lets not try and be something for everyone. This is the ultimate pink, girl’s book, whatever your age you will love it (laughs).

Your first book was based on Bollywood craft and we love Bollywood. If you could make a Bollywood inspired glitter craft project of any star who would you choose and why?

For any star…..lets try and think what my favourite best dressed person is I guess. I really love Kareena Kapoor and I love Priyanka. I just think they are brilliant, obviously I love some of the Rani Mukherjee’s of the world and the older crew, but I think what they are doing for girls now, I just think they are wonderful, they are kind of my age as well. Kareena just turned 32 and I am turning 32 this year so I always feel a bit of an affinity with her and I would love to style her in something glittery for sure.

Not only are you an author but you also work as the digital editor of news and lifestyle at Asiana, how do you find time to do everything?

I think when you really know what you want to do, you just got to find out what you want to do and do it. I have always wanted to be a writer, full stop. But then what am I passionate about writing about, I am passionate about crafts, let me do that. But then to be honest it is a niche field, I am never going to make a living that way so my journalism led me to work in the Asian magazines and now I edit the website. But it is really nice to get a balance, so I do three days a week at the magazine, two days a week crafting. As well as craft books I run craft workshops, I sell some of my own work and I do some consulting. Anything else that is to do with crafts I have become advocate for it so I am involved with other craft organizations, I might go to Astoria group meetings and talk about how we can get more people into crafts and things like that. Just try and have those two, it’s really quite amazing to be able to do two things that you love.

Any tips to any budding writers out there?

The best thing to do is to just write. I think now it is so much easier to write than ever before. When I started writing obviously there was no Internet, which sounds ridiculous but Internet is very new. So I used to, when I was 12, I used to write for something called Teletext, which was this thing that you got on the telly, it was this free TV guide. Then I started writing zine’s, zine’s were self-published, photocopies, little magazines. But now you can just do a blog, you can sit down and set up a blog. I would say get a blog going, it is the best way to write regularly. You don’t need to worry about getting published in magazines or anything just yet, just start out with a blog, best way.

You have a fun sense of fashion, any considerations to write a fashion based book for your next release?

A quarter of the projects based in this book are fashion related. There are interior projects; there are food and gifts, paper crafts and fashion. I did enjoy the fashion a lot. I have always, for the last ten years, wanted to write a teenagers fashion book and I think that is probably on the horizon at some point because that is a big passion of mine. The fact young people can get away with anything, it is just so free, so I would love to do that.

We have to ask what do you think about Bollywood films at the moment?

I haven’t got that excited about films in the last few years. There has been the big ones I have enjoyed. The thing that upsets me the most about Bollywood is when it reinforces stereotypes and when Bollywood is racist to other races and it happens in probably every film going on, that bugs me. Stylistically and the way they are looking, there are some fabulous actors and performers, performances, some fabulous songs and dances. I am not a big fan of the remixes but I love when you get a really classic kind of like Shankar Ehsaan Loy tune that’s just like, yes that is an anthem. There’s things I look forward to, I am trying to think of what films I have enjoyed this year, to be honest I cant think at this minute. I am not worried about Bollywood being mainstream, I think it is fine the way it is. I love the fact you can watch it more, I love the fact it is at my local cinema, I can get to three cinemas and it is there. I love the fact people are starting to understand. It is a very exciting thing, I don’t think I will ever be bored of Bollywood, I think it is something I will always have in my life. I look forward to it, sometimes there are days when nothing else would make me happier than watching a Bollywood film. I actually don’t watch Western films at all! I am a very busy person and have to really choose my time and for the last few years, I meant I watched Batman this year because I love Batman and I am going to watch James Bond, I mean they are the only two Western films I am going to watch this year. In the last couple of years I watched a couple of animations, but I didn’t watch any human films, they just don’t appeal. I want to go to a Bollywood cinema, I often go to the one in Upton Park, get a somosa, get a chai, the whole experience. That to me is much more exciting than a coke and popcorn and a Hollywood film. To be honest I am quite sad like that, in terms of my friends, I don’t know anything about Western film, but Bollywood yes (laughs). Even though I am not typically Asian but I really do know my Bollywood (laughs).

What is next for Momtaz? Do you have any more books coming out?

I am working on a follow up to this, 101+ Things to do with Ribbon. That will hopefully come out in a year’s time.

101+ Things to do With Glitter is set to release on 23rd October 2012.

Also the vegan diet can be very difficult one to live with, especially if you want to get all of your necessary nutrients. People mostly use supplements to make up for whatever they are missing in their diet. This is why Beachbody made the product vegan shakeology. By using Fermented Sprouted Brown Rice they made flavored vegan shakeology!

Shakeology has been considered by many, not only the healthiest supplement on the market, but the healthiest meal of the day. Also you will get to enjoy this in two different flavors which are the Tropical and chocolate Vegan Shakeology. These are like your own personal cheat sheets since you get to have the benefits of a vegan diet without fully going vegan or even trying!

Also these are very beneficial for your health as a plant-based diet results in lower cholesterol level and lower risk for heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Apart from this, by drinking these you can easily manage your weight and digestive issues. The vegan Shakeology tastes really great as for the first time ever Beachbody has managed to make creamy and smooth vegan products. These products deliver vegan benefits without the grittiness of vegan proteins.

They have been made specially by blending ultra-fine, bio-fermented, raw sprouted brown rice protein with sacha inchi, quinoa, chia, flax, amaranth, and spirulina. These shakes are a great source of proteins as they provide your body with 9 essential amino acids. Also apart from that they contain high levels of lysine and methionine, which are the two most important amino acids that are often a lacking in plant-based diets.

All these key nutrients come from 100% whole foods. This is really great for people following the vegan diet as they are unprocessed and unrefined, whole foods that deliver vitamins and nutrients to your body in the most holistic and easily assimilated way. Also all of these ingredients make these shakes really good for your health and they also make it taste really good.

The Tropical Strawberry Shakeology is one of the most delicious vegan shakes. It has been crafted with a mouthwatering mix of strawberries, bananas, papayas, pineapples, coconuts, plus whole superfoods from around the world. You will love the refreshing fruity flavor of this 100% vegan soy and dairy free Tropical Strawberry shake.

The Chocolate Vegan shakeology on the other hand is a completely plant-based formula with NO animal products. This will give your system a break from heavy animal proteins. This has been made from all natural chocolate. This shake is the way nature intended chocolate to taste. It’s rich, earthy chocolate taste is derived solely from whole-food ingredients with no additional flavoring agents.

Both these shakes contain superfoods which are really great for your health. People who are following vegan diet can really benefit from the superfoods that have been added to these shakes. They contain 5 different superfoods including moringa, coconut flower nectar, luo han guo, Himalayan salt, and konjac root. All of the key nutrients come from natural whole foods. There are no added vitamins or mineral isolates and no fortification.

Each of these superfoods has its own importance for the human body. The flower of a coconut tree produces nectar that’s sweet, has a round, earthy flavor, and is low on the glycemic index (GI). It is rich in many vitamins and minerals. It’s also rich with inulin, a prebiotic fiber that feeds our intestinal flora and helps boost digestive and immune functions. Luo Han Guo Fruit has antioxidant properties that help with immune health.

The Himalayan salt is minimally processed, therefore it contains more than 70 trace minerals from the Earth that our bodies need. Moringa is also called the “Tree of Life,” because it is one of nature’s most nutritious foods. This superfood contains 90 nutrients and 46 antioxidants along with all of the essential amino acids. Konjac Root on the other hand helps promote healthy blood sugar levels, makes you feel full quicker, promotes healthy cholesterol levels, and helps clean the digestive tract of excess fat and toxins.

Another great thing about these shakes is that it is lactose free. As most people have trouble digesting dairy, whey protein, or animal proteins, they can totally have this shake as it is lactose free! Also these shakes lack fructose s they have been made with superfoods which are naturally sweet. Therefore if you’re anti-fructose, then Chocolate Vegan or Tropical Strawberry will be perfect for you!

A great thing about following the vegan Shakeology is that it will make your craving disappear. The new ingredient konjac root that has been added in both Chocolate Vegan and Tropical Strawberry Shakeology will help your cravings disappear! The fiber in this new wonder-food absorbs up to 200 times its weight in water, making you feel fuller, for a very long time.
