Deepa Mehta has confirmed that both she and author Salman Rushdie are looking at Imran Khan for the key role of Saleem in her movie of Midnight’s Children – but the casting has yet to be confirmed. “My friend Rushdie will take an active part in the casting for the film,” explained Deepa, “He will also look into who plays Saleem, and quite approves of Imran. He is yet to meet Imran though, to take a final call. I personally feel that if an actor is good and suited to the role he plays, then his popularity will only add to the film’s equity.”

Imran’s Luck seems to be improving as it’s also been confirmed that Lara Dutta will perform an item number in the eponymous film that also stars Shruti Hassan, Sanjay Dutt and Danny Denzongpa. Fresh from her stunning item number in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Lara will certainly add fire to the action flick.

Imran’s co-star Shruti debuts in the film but claims she’s not bothered by the competition from any other debutantes around at the moment. “I don’t even know who the other debutantes are. I don’t feel the need to be compared with anybody. The only person I’m answerable to is myself. I’m here to do my own thing,” she says.
