Yamla Pagla Deewana. A film that was not without its own trials and tribulations. The film went to floors in February 2010 and soon came to a halt due to the hospitalization of Dharmendra. With Deol Senior ready to rock and roll shooting commenced in Varansi in April 2010 but was soon disrupted in July, when Sunny Deol faced back problems while filming an action sequence. It truly looked as though Samir Karnik’s fifth offering might not make it to the cinema hall but as the saying goes, alls well that ends well.

Yamla Pagla Deewana opened to a good response in India, making 24 crore net in its first weekend and 35 crore by the end of its first week with it doing predictably well in Punjab, Delhi and UP. Released ahead of a public holiday – Yamla Pagla Deewana saw the full benefit of the Republic Day Celebrations with a 300% increase in collections. After seven weeks the film’s net collections stood at 54.72 crore in India alone while the overseas market saw the film making $993,031 in America and £539,774 in the UK.

And why wouldn’t it. The Karnik magic final worked on the cine-going junta. The film received a mixed review from the critics, with some like Taran Adarsh liking it and giving it a 3.5 out of 5, whilst commenting that ‘it delivers what it promised in its promos: Laughter and amusement’. On the other hand, Shubra Gupta for Indian Express believed that with Yamla Pagla Deewana ‘we are subjected to the loudest set of dialogues and the most vacuous set of characters we’ve been confronted with in a while’ and gave the film 1/5. BollySpice Reviewer Roshni Mulchandani gave this Karnik offering 2 out of 5 saying ‘while the film isn’t really a treat, it does manage to do what it apparently set out to: entertain paisa vasool style’.

Nonetheless – Yamla Pagla Deewana is the Mid Year Number 2.
