Salaam Namaste (2005)
One of the biggest box-office hits of the year, Salaam Namaste took the audiences away from the norm of a traditional romance. Set in Australia, the look of this Preity Zinta and Saif Ali Khan starter was modern perfection. With a beach wedding, a house overlooking the sea and trendy attire, this movie was very much stamped with “freshness”. It’s safe to say that this was a huge contributory factor in depiction of romance between Saif’s character Nick and Preity’s Ambar.

A story which toys with the idea of a live-in relationship and the complications surrounding, the film was arguably more popular among the younger audiences. The slapstick comedy proved a huge hit, especially in the first half of the movie. The romance quota was very much complimented by the differences between the two protagonists initially. The story deals with the everyday issues of a contemporary couple and their first year living together.

The only other romantic film that would get the romantic vote in this year was Parineeta, also starring Saif Ali Khan. With the introduction of Vidya Balan and supporting actor Sunjay Dutt, Parineeta was yet another take on an epic romance.
