On Friday, December 18, vegetarian Bollywood stars attended the 10th anniversary celebrations of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) in Mumbai. Other actors who were present at the event included Hema Malini, John Abraham, Jackie Shroff, Raveena Tandon Thadani, Celina Jaitely and musician Anoushka Sharma.

Jackie Shroff commended PETA for completing ten years and urged them to carry on with their good work. “The way they take care of animals, I feel very nice. In today’s world you don’t know who is animal and who is human. But whatever they are doing for ethical treatment of animals is fantastic. I think if more such volunteers and more ambulances should be there as one can see injured cow or dog lying on the road, there’s nobody to pick them up and so if there are more such organizations to take care of animals it would be fantastic,” he said.

Also present at the event was Mahima Chaudhary who also commended PETA (an international organization) for doing well in India. She said, “I think it’s a great day to celebrate for them because I know they put in a lot of effort. It’s a huge struggle. Especially in a country where so little is being done for humans and then animals come down way down in the list. And I think they are very-very active in India. And I salute them. And in my own way I have tried to support them, in my own little way. And I love all the people who work here at PETA.”

A host of other actors like John Abraham, Raveena Tandon and Celina Jaitley have been actively involved in PETA campaigns by promoting vegetarianism through advertisements.

Bollywood hottie, Shahid Kapoor was presented with the “PETA Asia’s Sexiest Vegetarian Award” at the gala event.

Ingrid E. Newkirk, Founder of PETA said in a statement, “It is largely thanks to our celebrity friends and the countless people they have influenced that PETA India has been able to accomplish so much for animals over the past 10 years.”

PETA India was founded in 2000 and is dedicated to establishing and defending the rights of animals.
