The writer of the Mutton Song admits that he never wanted to be a lyricist in the first place, but he’s willing to go along with destiny.

Amitabh Bhattacharya began his career in the off beat film Dev D. The punchy beats and Hinglish lyrics made this a quirky hit and established Bhattacharya as a thoughtful and inventive lyricist. Later projects included Udaan and I Am, both of which have stirred up attention for both film content and musical singularity.

Bhattacharya, however, does not credit his own talent, but the films themselves as inspiration for the lyrics he writes. “It so happened that the projects I got required those kind of lyrics,” he explains to media sources. “My personal rule is that when I’m doing a film, I go through the script and dialogues because I need to know the language used by the characters in the film.”

While Bhattacharya first arrived in Mumbai hoping for success as a singer, his lyrics were noticed first. The lyricist is okay with this turn of events. “I have understood one thing, life and destiny have its own course. I resisted being a lyricist, but I became one. If something comes my way, I will give it a shot, but right now busy with writing.”

As a playback singer, Bhattacharya has already sang in seven films including Band Baaja Baaraat and No One Killed Jessica. We wouldn’t be surprised to see a few more in the next few years.
