Actors have usually claimed that the main reason for them to work in a film is the script & the director. The ones which have substance and offer a chance to challenge their creative ability are always preferred more by any actor. Innovative directors like Hansal Mehta, Abhishek Chaubey and Navdeep Singh are increasingly becoming that rare class of directors.

When noted director Hansal Mehta was asked about this phenomenon he said, “How would you define commercial or mainstream cinema? We haven’t seen many successful films in the recent past (sic), so by that definition, no one is a commercial director. It’s just that actors want to play strong characters, do interesting films and be challenged. It’s a mutual process.” Many times termed as ‘parallel cinema’ or ‘offbeat cinema’, it has always been a source of fodder for the inventive souls.

The newest breed of mainstream actresses are increasingly looking for meatier roles and not afraid to work with fairly newer directors. The recent phenomenon has seen top notch actresses like Alia Bhatt work with Abhishek Chaubey in Udta Punjab, whereas Anushka Sharma’s NH10 is directed by Navdeep Singh, Hansal Mehta will be working with Kangana Ranaut in his upcoming movie. Noted film maker Shoojit Sircar’s Piku has Deepika Padukone as the lead actress.

Here’s hoping more such directors follow the lead of Mehta, Chaubey & Shoojit!
