firstlooktanuwedsmanuThe loveable Tanu and Manu have done the unthinkable, and this time around they have Datto to thank as well. Together, the trio has managed to achieve a feat which wasn’t really on the cards for even their near and dear ones (read, director Aanand L Rai who has co-produced the film with Krishika Lulla). However, in the times when the biggest of films have failed like nine pins, this sweet and simple desi tale has won hearts of millions already and still going strong.

In 8 days flat, the Kangna Ranaut and Madhavan starrer has globally grossed 101.67 crore at the box office. Out of this, just the India box office collections stands at a whopping 76.67 crore already, what with a stunning second Friday that resulted in 6.65 crore coming in. While this fabulous trend means that at least 15 crore more would come on Saturday and Sunday, hence resulting in the 90 crore mark being crossed in India in 10 days flat, the 100 crore nett mark would be achieved inside two weeks itself.

With this, Tanu Weds Manu Returns – which costs just 30 crore after including P&A, has managed Blockbuster status for itself. Also, in a year that has seen only four films cross the 100 crore mark globally so far (the other being Baby, Gabbar Is Back and Piku), Tanu Weds Manu Returns has managed quite a few records, including highest weekend, biggest Monday, best cumulative weekdays as well as quickest march towards the 100 crore mark globally.

Says Krishika Lulla, “People expect certain kind of films from me and I need to justify my association with the final product. For me, content is everything. Especially real cinema is something that I enjoy most, and Tanu Weds Manu Returns is one such film. I like to make such kind of films and I hope to keep the trend on and continue to win audience trust and confidence.”

Madhavan is of course ecstatic as his three year break from the big screen has brought in dividends. When contacted, he said, “I am not at all surprised with the film’s super-success. There are some films that give you that confidence during the shooting itself, and Tanu Weds Manu Returns was one such affair.”

So what are the plans from here? “Well, it has been such an amazing franchise. I do hope that there is Part 3 as well,” he smiles.

 We hope so as well.
