Global Indian Music Academy Awards – Nominations Announced!

The nominations for the 4th Star Global Indian Music Academy Awards (GIMA) 2013 have been announced! This event is an effort by Wizcraft International Entertainment to felicitate Indian music. The jury comprises of some of the best artistes of the field and this jury decides the nominees.

Beginning with film-music based nominations, Barfi! leads this category with seven nominations and is followed by Talaash, Student of the Year, Ishaqzaade, Cocktail and Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Vishal-Shekhar have received 4 nominations this year for Student of the Year and the song ‘Radha’. Singing sensation Shreya Ghoshal has also received 4 nominations, three for best duet and one for best playback singer.

Music director Pritam has been nominated for six awards. The different categories are best background score, best music arranger and programmer, two nominations for best music director, best music album for Cocktail and Barfi! and best film song.

Shalmali Kholgade has been nominated in four categories, namely best music debut and best playback singer (female) for the popular song ‘Pareshaan’ from Ishaqzaade. The best lyricist nominations in the film-music category go to Javed Akhtar for ‘Jee le zara’ and ‘Jiya lage na’, Irshad Kamil for ‘Tumhi ho bandhu’ and Gulzar for ‘Saans’.

Coming to the non-film music genre, some famous songs from the album Coke Studio @ MTV Season 2 like ‘Husna’, ‘Madari’, ‘Sathi Salaam’ and ‘Dum Dum’ have been nominated in categories like best fusion album, best folk album and best indie song. This year also sees a new category called the electronic dance music track category. Disc jockey Arjun Vagale and electronic music artist Madhav Shorey have earned nominations in this category.

Infamous musicians like Pandit Shivkumar Sharma and Ustad Zakir Hussain are nominees in the best hindustani classical instrumental album category. Anup Jalota is popular in the devotional music genre has been nominated in the best devotional album category. The category of best ghazals has popular nominees like Ustad Ghulam Ali, Ustad Rashid Khan, Hariharan, Talat Aziz and the late Jagjit Singh.
