This past weekend saw the release of two big movies, Bhool Bhulaiya and Laga Chunari Mein Daag. Both films released simultaneously in India and overseas and in both markets BB topped LCMD at the box office, with both films doing well overseas especially in the UK and US.
Bhool Bhulaiya was number 1 at the box office in India and had a very good opening,70% in some places, with the tally of total ticket sales still to be made. Overseas, it debuted at number 7 on the UK charts, which is the biggest opening ever for a Bollywood film. During the first weekend, it grossed an outstanding 293,905 pounds. In the US it did very well as well with a 3 day box office total of $512,000. BB made approximately Rs. 6.5 crore in the first 3 days outside of India.
Laaga Chunari Mein Daag did not fare as well in India, opening at number 2 and many trade analysts feel it does not look like it will live up to the producers expectations. In fact some theaters are reporting only a 30-40% opening. However, overseas it fared better. In the UK, it did very well with $501,714 collected in ticket sales. In the US it did fairly well with $320,987 with a total of Rs 4.75 crore in the overseas market.
In India, both films are expected to pick up in the coming weeks, especially LCMD and with no major film scheduled to release this week it will be interesting to see if they both get the title of average, hit or super hit.
