Piers Handling, CEO and Director of the Toronto International Film Festival, and Cameron Bailey, Artistic Director of the Toronto International Film Festival, announced the first round of titles premiering in the Galas and Special Presentations programmes of the 39th Toronto International Film Festival in a press conference yesterday. Though Cameron Bailey assured that further announcements of both Bollywood and other Indian films would be coming, one much-anticipated film, Mary Kom, starring National Award winning actor Priyanka Chopra, was announced amongst the list of Special Presentations at TIFF2014.
The Sanjay Leela Bhansali-produced, Omung Kumar-directed biopic of Manipuri boxer Mary Kom – who counts an Olympic Bronze Medal amongst her prizes – is a story of incredible triumph, and the film will be seen as a World Premiere at this year’s festival, meaning, that under TIFF’s new policy of demanding World Premiere status for any film shown in the first four days of the festival, we can anticipate that Mary Kom will find its place on the TIFF2014 programme sometime between September 4th and September 8th. Given that Viacom 18 is releasing the film in theatres on September 5th, we can only speculate that the film will find itself screening *very* early at TIFF2014.
The film’s trailer was released following on the TIFF2014 announcement. Check it out!
