Having already won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, the critically acclaimed Slumdog Millionaire has now been honored with 3 awards at the British Independent Film Awards. Not only did it win the coveted prize of Best Film, Danny Boyle was named best director and Dev Patel, the star of the film was named the Most Promising Newcomer.
Danny Boyle said it was weird to win the award after the recent tragedy in Mumbai but told Empire “It’ll be very nice to text all the people we worked with in Mumbai and give them something to smile about in the morning. [The city] has a spirit that this film celebrates and despite what’s happened, it’s a city that’s moving towards happiness.”
The film also has lots of Oscar buzz and there are even rumbles it will get nominated at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards.
Boyle jokingly said, “I thought with awards season we’d only ever be at the back of the room waving. It’s very nice to be at the front.”
