Colour Yellow Productions’ Tumbbad is one of the most remarkable sleeper hits in Indian cinema, evolving into an epic over time. Upon its initial release, audiences walked in expecting a typical horror-thriller vibe, only to be immersed in a world they had never imagined, solidifying the film as one of Aanand L Rai’s most iconic productions. Known for bringing heartfelt stories from India’s heartland to the forefront, Colour Yellow Productions ventured into new territory with Tumbbad, redefining its approach to horror scripts. This film was special, marking a shift for the production house in exploring the genre in a fresh, innovative way.

Tumbbad’ is receiving an overwhelming response from the audience ever since it re-released in theatres. Expressing his gratitude over the film’s successful theatrical re-run, Aanand L Rai said that the response to the film’s re-release is proof that “every story get its share of love”. He recalled that when the film made it to the theatres for the first time, he knew that the audiences will love it, but he regretted that the film didn’t get the kind of reception he had expected. However, things changed when the Sohum Shah-starrer released in theatres for the second time.

“There was a slight phase where we felt, we had made fewer films in the last 1-1.5 years, so we thought this was a very correct opportunity to bring ‘Tumbbad’. And the response is very overwhelming and lovely,” said Aanand while revealing the reason behind the decision to re-release the film.

The film, starring Sohum Shah, was re-released in theatres September 13, giving both longtime fans and new viewers a chance to experience its unique blend of folklore and horror in cinemas. ‘Tumbbad’ was perhaps one of the first few horror films that blended Indian folklore beautifully with the horror world. Apart from compelling storytelling and incredible performances, the film’s VFX played a pivotal role, drawing audiences into its haunting world.

Reflecting on Tumbbad’s re-release, Aanand L. Rai shared, “Tumbbad was more than just a film for us—it was a journey into uncharted territory. The curiosity and the questions about a possible Tumbbad 2 even today, speaks volumes about its impact. We’re incredibly proud of Tumbbad. This is undoubtedly one of Colour Yellow Productions’ proudest ventures, and also another step in its journey of experimenting with genres.”

Rai is also basking in the success of his latest production, Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba. A sequel to the pulpy thriller Haseen Dillruba, this film went on to shatter viewership records due to the buzz surrounding it. With the addition of ‘Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba’, Colour Yellow Productions has once again proved its commitment to bringing genre-defining cinema to audiences. With Tumbbad returning to the big screen on September 13, advance booking for the film is now open. Looking ahead, Aanand L Rai and Colour Yellow Productions are gearing up for their next releases, which include ‘Nakhrewaalii’ and ‘Tere Ishk Mein’.
