Fans of Akshay Kumar were in for a real treat this weekend when the superstar posted a shirtless selfie on a social networking site. Needless to say, Khiladi Kumar looks ripped and oozed machoness. This was also the actor’s first selfie ever.

The international icon had tweeted:

Akshay Kumar is known as India’s undisputed fittest actor and has always promoted natural ways of achieving a healthy lifestyle and physical prowess.

His passion for fitness and martial arts is well known. The international icon was formerly a professional martial arts trainer in Bangkok before turning to acting. Akshay Kumar is not only a qualified Martial Arts Instructor but has risen in recent years to the prestigious accolade ofShihan — teachers’ teacher. Alongside his countless action films, Akshay has amassed a wide array of martial arts qualifications including asixth degree black belt in Karate and a black belt in Taekwondo. Even when not training for a specific film, Akshay keeps himself physically fit, with his exercises often starting as early as 5am.

The actor recently leveraged his sporting expertise in order to help women learn how to better defend themselves, with the launch of a Martial Arts Institute for women in Mumbai. The institute is set to provide three month long, free of charge, self-defense courses.

A gritty and tense thriller about the relationship between two brothers gone awry, “Brothers” is an official remake of the 2011 Hollywood film‘Warriors’. It stars Akshay Kumar, Sidharth Malhotra and Jacqueline Fernandez in lead roles, and features veteran actor Jackie Shroff in a pivotal role. The film is directed by Karan Malhotra of Agneepath fame and is produced by Karan Johar, under his Dharma Productions banner. In the film, Akshay will be seen playing Sidharth’s older brother —  who are both martial arts fighters — seeking victory in the ring.

Akshay Kumar had taken on the training of his co-star Sidharth Malhotra. The pair reportedly worked relentlessly on a gruelling fitness regime, both requiring highly controlled diets, prolonged martial arts training sessions and weight lifting. Whilst working together, their goals were reportedly very different, with Sidharth needing to gain considerable muscle mass in a short space of time, whilst Akshay had to lose 10-12 kilos for his role, suggesting that Akshay’s character will have a far sleeker and trimmed look than more recent action films we’ve seen Akshay in.

Brothers releases internationally on Friday 14th August 2015
