Arshad Warsi and Maria Goretti have reportedly split up after nine years of marriage and two children. Differences appear to have developed between them due to Arshad’s hectic work schedule. “I think I’m fairly good as a father,” Arshad says, “My kids just love me, but as a husband, I think I tend to take Maria for granted.”
Arshad hit the big time in the role of Circuit in the movies Munabbhai MBBS and Lago Raho Munabbhai, for which he won a Best Comedian Award. He has been busy of late in movies such as Hulchul, Salaam Namaste, Golmaal, Dhamaal, Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal, Sunday and Krazzy 4. He will reprise the role of Circuit early next year in Munabbhai Chale America.
Maria Goretti, named after the Christian saint, was a star VJ and actress until she married Arshad and settled in the role of homemaker. The pair first met in 1991. As Arshad put it in happier days, “I was invited to Malhar to judge a dance competition where I noticed this lovely girl with a cute smile from St. Andrew’s College, who was also participating in the competition and I fell in love with her. But if I have my facts right, it wasn’t love at first sight,” he says.
Maria picks up the story, “After the show Arshad came up to me and asked me if I would like to join his dance troupe, but I refused,” she says, “Three months later I met him again through a common friend and we gradually became friends. He even convinced me to join his dance troupe.”
Love is a vociferous beast – once you’ve gained it, you have to keep feeding it, falling in love over and over again. Once you neglect it, it soon fades to grey.
