Sonam Kapoor was elated when she found out that courtesy of her L’Oreal contract, she would be walking down the red carpet with the likes of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and her counterparts at the Cannes Film Festival. Not only would she join Bachchan, but Penelope Cruz, Naomi Lenoir, Andie MacDowell, Beyonce Knowles, Laetitia Casta, Kerry Washington, Milla Jovovich, Michelle Yeoh, Eva Longoria and Scarlett Johansson—making her the youngest girl to join the “L’Oreal Dream Team.” However, all of a sudden, plans changed and Sonam was advised by L’Oreal, to skip out on the festival this year.
According to The Times of India, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was extremely peeved when she heard that Sonam would be coming along and made it clear that this should not happen. Many reports also claim that Ash had made it very clear to L’Oreal that while she was the international face for the cosmetic firm, Sonam would be the Indian face and thus would not be required at Cannes. Others also went on to claim that Ash did not want Sonam to “steal her thunder.” After realizing that Ash was clearly adamant, L’Oreal decided to let Sonam stay away from Cannes on this occasion which meant she would not walk the carpet with Penelope Cruz for the premiere of Broken Promises either.
While Sonam remained unavailable to comment, her spokesperson went on to state, “Sonam’s not travelling to Cannes…the brand should know best. She’s been asked not to go.”
