The magic of Bollywood has been celebrated in a myriad of ways in a myriad of formats: from movies within movies, international movies with a Bolly-flavor, soundtracks, concerts, lavish musicals, beautiful art, as well as many, many books; we love them all. At Bollyspice, we, especially Stacey, love to shine the spotlight on unique projects that bring Bollywood to the world at large.  Recently, she came across a celebration of Bollywood in the form of a children’s picture book. Written and illustrated by Avani Dwivedi, My Bollywood Dream is a brilliant immersive story of a young girl’s trip to the cinema with her family. This charming book brings you into the world of Mumbai and Bollywood films with a mixture of vivid and whimsical illustrations and a captivating storyline. It is perfect for kids, but adults will love it as well!

Once I read and fell in love with My Bollywood Dream, I wanted to discuss the story with Avani Dwivedi, and happily, she agreed to an interview. During our fun and fascinating conversation, Ms. Dwivedi delves into her drawing and writing process, discusses the Bollywood Easter eggs she included in the brilliant book, and of course, her love letter to Bollywood, the book itself,  My Bollywood Dream

Check it out!

My Bollywood Dream, the School Library Journal Best Book of the Year, is published by Walker Books and Candlewick Press. As they travel, the girl captures the sights and sounds of the city with her camera and imagines a movie unfolding before her eyes. And when they reach the screening, the room is electric – it’s time to dance!
