On Monday 4th June BBC Asian Network will celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee by dedicating the whole day to Asian female talent from the world of music, film and TV.
From Breakfast with Raj & Pablo, through to the Friction show, listeners will hear music from women only as we showcase the vocals of Lata Mangeshkar, Alka Yagnik, Shreya Ghoshal, Runa Laila, Noor Jahan, Shazia Manzoor, Hadiqa Kiani, Miss Pooja and many more.
Raj & Pablo kick things off on the Breakfast show as they re-live interviews with Bollywood star Kareena Kapoor and British Actress Nina Wadia. From 10am, Rupal looks back at the greats of Bollywood music and screen by playing music from the BBC archives. Girl power continues with Shay from 1pm on ‘Queens on the Asian Network’, where she flies solo without Sunny for the day to play two hours of live music from talents including Sunidhi Chauhan, Alka Yagnik, and Harshdeep Kaur. At 3pm Waqas sits in for Noreen with acoustic tracks recorded especially for ‘Queen’s on the Asian Network’ celebrations from Kiran Dhanoa, Alyssia, and Kee. From 6.30pm, Gagan gives listeners the opportunity to request their favourite female tracks in Play As You Go and Zarina Khan goes on to celebrate the best of female Pakistani artists past and present on the Mirpuri Show from 9pm. Friction winds up the day by reminiscing about all the female talent he’s introduced to the scene in BBC Introducing, as well as providing listeners with an exclusive Maida Vale live session from Tasha Tah.
This special day is in addition to the station’s ‘Summer of Stars’ campaign. From May to September, the BBC Asian Network is presenting a range of exclusive programming including specialised meet the stars events, comedy, drama and dedicated programmes, where listeners can hear from voices such as sports personality Shahid Afridi and comedy sensation Meera Syal.
