What happens when a charming Prince, a feisty commoner find themselves in one unexpected love story? Chaos that unravels into a rollercoaster of romance, comedy, and a whole lot of drama! When their worlds collide, things get messy, emotional, and seriously entertaining! The Royals features the stunning new on-screen jodi of Bhumi Pednekar and Ishaan Khatter, who shine in their rom-com era. This exciting series will be on Netflix on May 9.
When Aviraaj Singh, the polo-playing, pleasure-seeking, party prince, heir to the royal throne of Morpur, meets high-functioning, tightly wound, ace CEO Sophia Kanmani Shekhar, sparks and insults fly as they reluctantly come together to save his royally dysfunctional family from financial ruin and to save her own leading startup of luxury homestays in India from shark investment bankers. Two worlds, when Rajkumar’s (prince) polished world collides with Aam Kumari’s (commoner) grit, sparks fly, egos clash, and romance blooms for this unlikely match.
Bhumi Pednekar says, “Playing Sophia felt like stepping into a world that’s both aspirational and deeply relatable. She’s fierce, ambitious, and emotionally honest — qualities I’ve always been drawn to. I’m glad I could collaborate with Netflix and Pritish Nandy Communications for The Royals and extremely grateful that they brought this series to life — I hope people have as much fun watching it as we did making it.”
Ishaan Khatter adds, “To share the screen with such legendary and accomplished actors has been inspiring and a joy. This marks my second collaboration with Netflix globally and my first with Netflix India, and it has been an adventure yet again. The Royals is a fresh, modern-day rom-com — zany, unpredictable, and packed with surprises. I can’t wait for audiences to dive into the world of Morpur and binge it all! There’s a lot of love, drama, humour — something for everyone. Maharaja Aviraaj is the most frustratingly charming character I’ve essayed, and I hope the audience enjoys watching him as much as I enjoyed playing the role.”
Directed by Priyanka Ghose and Nupur Asthana, written by Neha Veena Sharma, and produced under the banner of Pritish Nandy Communications, The Royals is the brainchild of Rangita Pritish Nandy and Ishita Pritish Nandy also features Zeenat Aman, Sakshi Tanwar, Nora Fatehi, Dino Morea, Milind Soman, Chunky Panday, Vihaan Samat, Kavya Trehan, Sumukhi Suresh, Udit Arora, Lisa Mishra and Luke Kenny.
Creators Rangita and Ishita Pritish Nandy shared: “The Royals, being our very first with Netflix, had to be just the right blend of coming-of-age-India, Gen Z storytelling, and feisty fun! There is the inevitable romance of old royalty, monarchs without crowns, and the incredible drive of today’s startup warriors for whom crowns hold zero shine. Sparks and insults will fly when these two worlds clash, and that has been great fun for us to create and produce!”
Adding, “With The Royals, we’ve mounted a romance that whips together the old-world charm of palaces and Indian royalty with glass-walled boardrooms and modern reality—where love is anything but easy. The series is about two people from completely different worlds, each fighting their own battles, constantly at odds, yet irresistibly drawn to each other in ways they never expected—remember how you never want the good one but always chase after the one you know is trouble?—that’s The Royals for you. As they clash, challenge, storm, and rage against each other to prove their worth, they must also discover whether their love can survive the chaos that’s them. Expect drama, humour, and a whole lot of fire!”
The fantastic Jodi of Bhumi and Ishaan definitely spark and flame in this opposites attracts story.
