Bollywood film actress Anjana Sukhani is set to boost the small Sandalwood film industry based in Kannada. Her debut opposite Golden Star Ganesh, Maleyali Jotheyali, hits the screens this weekend. Anjana’s birthday is also on December 10th so it’s going to be a celebration weekend for her. The Jaipur-born actress, who appeared in Golmaal Returns and Salaam-e-Ishq has settled down well in the industry and looks set to stay. “There have been times when I have scouted Mumbai for a restaurant that serves South Indian food,” she says, “I seem to have settled down well with the spices and the place pretty quickly.”
Anjana had heard about Ganesh’s superstar status before joining the movie cast, but was astonished when she met it in real life. “I’d heard about the massive fan following Ganesh has,” she concedes, “When we were shooting, for example, I saw the crowds of people trying to get a look at him. I hope to be here to see how the audience reacts to the film when their hero appears.”
Anjana’s motives in moving south are the opportunities for more substantial roles than the glamour-bound stereotypes normally to be found in Bollywood. However, she is full of praise for the Hindi Tum Milo To Sahi, which also stars Dimple Kapadia and Tanisha Mukherjee. To be released in January, it describes a woman’s love across three generations. “When you are in your 60s, you want companionship,” Anjana explains, “In your middle age, you are caught between your personal and professional life and in your college days, you have so many crushes and go through a roller-coaster ride through various wild emotions.”
