While the daring theme surprised the public initially, audiences have fallen in love with the Amitabh-Tabu starrer Cheeni Kum directed by R. Balki.
After a slow start in India, the film has picked up tremendously, especially in the cities. Overseas, the film has taken a wonderful opening, topping the multistarrer Shootout at Lokhandwala. Now this comes as a massive surprise!
Naturally, the four-day weekend helped. In the United Kingdom, Cheeni Kum debuted at #9 and grossed Rs. 1.16 crores on 31 screens. Meanwhile, SOAL ranked at #14 with Rs. 61.93 lacs on 19 screens.
In particular, the North American collections were fantastic for a film minus a Yash Raj tag, SRK or a reputed director. Cheeni Kum opened at #22 here, grossing Rs. 1.40 crores. This was far ahead of SOAL at #31 with Rs. 64 lacs.
After overtaking strong opposition, it looks like the film should emerge a winner in the Overseas territory!
