“Dancing gives you the license to break free!” – Meiyang Chang

He sings, he hosts, he acts and now Meiyang Chang dances! We heard his fabulous voice on the third season of Indian Idol. We watched him host the show for season four. He then went on to make his debut as an actor in the film Badmaash Company and his performance was given great reviews. Now each week Meiyang can be seen trying, stretching, learning and moving to the beat on the popular dance show Jhalak Dikhla Jaa. In between rehearsals and taping of the show Meiyang sat down and answered our questions about his first experience ever learning to dance, performing in front of the esteemed judges and what his fans support means to him.

What convinced you to take up the challenge of being on Jhalak Dikhla Jaa?

I have immense awe and respect for good dancing. Life in a boarding school denied me the opportunity to join dance classes and thereafter work didn’t permit it either. Jhalak is learning while you work, so I couldn’t have asked for a better solution. By the way, this is my first attempt at dancing, EVER!

You said in a very initial episode that you know Remo is the toughest to please, do you think he’s warmed up to you guys?

Remo is not a strict, acerbic judge. Rather, his encouraging demeanor and smile calm me down. The pressure lies in wanting to impress him as he’s the most knowledgeable about the technicalities of an act and I know that if he’s impressed then I can breathe easy. Madhuri and Malaika might look at the aesthetics of a dance, but Remo looks at it with microscopic vision!
