Bollywood dreamgirl Deepal Shaw is pleased with the way her releases are stacking up in her favour. “I am getting to play some fantastic roles,” she says, “In Right Ya Wrong, I am a de-glam lady cop caught between Irrfan Khan and Sunny Deol; in Vikalp, I am a software engineer who hails from Kolhapur and moves to Mumbai. I also have another film Tum Se with Irrfan Khan which is about how love can create hassles in people’s lives.”

More commonly known as the singer Baby Doll after her first album, her sexy videos are often shown on MTV India and consist largely of Autotune Hindi remixes. After appearing as a prostitute in Chamku, she realises she ran the risk of being stereotyped and is working hard to undermine that image. “In Kalyug, I had some scenes where I played a typical village girl,” she says, “I have a long way to go yet. Having played a porn star in my Bollywood debut, I got stereotyped thereafter.”

Deepal was involved in the unusual crossover film Karma, Confessions and Holi, produced by Rober DeNiro’s daughter – what made her get involved in that? “It was very early in my career to do a film like this but after all an actor needs to show his or her talent,” she explains, “So, even if the film were in Chinese or French I would have done it. I want to rule the world so what better way than to do different cinema with different audiences?”
