Fresh from her critical success in Delhi-6, Divya Dutta is enjoying working on Haat – The Weekly Bazaar. She was recently asked to perform an item number for the movie in front of a real village audience rather than in a studio setting. At first nervous, she soon warmed to the experience. “We were shooting in this village in Rajasthan and my director told me the number would be out in the open with villagers watching me,” Divya takes up the story, “Initially I was awkward and my steps went wrong but as I started dancing and gyrating with the typical thumkaas I heard wolf whistles and this encouraged me. I realized that the villagers were enjoying it so I went ahead without any hitches. It was indeed a once in a life time experience.”
After winning awards with SRK’s Veer Zaara, Divya’s career is finally beginning to take-off with recent acclaimed performances in The Last Lear, Welcome to Sajjanpur and of course Delhi-6. Next on the horizon for her is Paroksh with top Bengali actress Rituparna Sengupta; then the much-anticipated Hissss with Mallika Sherawat and Irrfan Khan, in which she has a long lip-locking scene with Irrfan; Abba Ka Kuan with Minissha Lamba and Boman Irani, and Chargesheet with Jackie Shroff, Riya Sen and the evergreen Dev Anand. A very interesting movie masala!
Finally, on the horizon, is Monica, in which she has a lesbian scene with Kitu Gadwani. Did she feel nervous about doing the scene? “I had never met Kitu earlier,” she explains, “We both were a bit awkward, but things became fine as we both trusted our director. We are both serious actors and every role we take up, we look to do it responsibly.”
