Subhash K Jha looks back with director Divya Khosla on the 2016 romance Sanam Re, which starred Pulkit Samrat, Yami Gautam, Urvashi Rautela and Rishi Kapoor.

How do you look back on your directorial debut?
I’m extremely thankful for all the love the audience has given to Sanam Re. The film struck a chord with the audience, and we had a great response at the theatres and over the years, I think people have really watched it on satellite.

So you are pleased enough to plan a sequel?
I have gotten a lot of response, people coming to me telling me to make Sanam Re 2 and they have loved the film and even say things like that they felt so cool watching it. It was such a film because the film was shot entirely in the snow, so they felt really cold watching the film, and they felt as if they themselves were there.

But surely there was more than the snow that appealed to the audience?
The story resonated with them. It was a love story, and it had a lot of depth in it. The love story actually starts during childhood and then how, at times, you are separated by distance, but when there is pure love, then the universe will always make sure that you meet again, and there’s a lot that is planned by the higher consciousness, the higher soul.

You seem very attached to Sanam Re?
I’m thankful for all the love and the way it resonated with the audience. But as a director, I actually still feel that I should have edited it better; that is, of course, a thought which still remains with me when I think of Sanam Re. I feel I should have done a better job editing the film. I’m a very critical person when I look at my work. I’m never satisfied with my work I always want to better it; improve it. I keep finding faults in it. But that is how I am, and that’s why I feel I should have edited it a little better.

Will Sanam Re be re-released like Sanam Teri Kasam?
I’ve been getting calls from theater owners to re-release it, and there has been a little amount of pressure for that. But if I have to re-release it, I’ll have to sit on the edit, and I’m really not in that state of mind right now because I’m working as an actor. You know, I’m not in that headspace right now to sit on the edit again, but yeah, there is that pressure on me right now for the re-release.
