The King is Back! Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Boman Irani, Om Puri, Kunal Kapoor and Lara Dutta, Don 2 has been getting rave reviews. Even here at BollySpice we gave it 4 stars saying, “Don 2 is a genre that has rarely been successfully implemented in Bollywood. It’s slick, explosive and finely crafted with action sequences hardly ever seen before on the Indian screen. It’s one of those rare sequels that’s better than its predecessor in almost every respect.” Not only has Don 2 raked in critical and audience praise, the film is also going hot at the box office the world over. In India alone, the opening weekend total was 48 crore and it is well on its way to hitting the 100 crore mark.
Overseas, the film is doing just as well. We told you earlier this week that in the UK, Don 2 entered the Top Ten, which is pretty cool. The film opened early there on the 21st and by Friday it had already taken in US $527,000. In the Middle East, the film grossed US$ 930,000 and in Australia and New Zealand the total reached US $136,000.
In the US, Don 2 had the biggest Bollywood opening of the year in the North America market. The opening 4-day total was $2.1 million, making it bigger than Ra.One’s 5-day opening weekend. In the first 4 days it will surpass the lifetime gross of Salman Khan’s Bodyguard in the US. Playing in 161 theaters across the U.S. and Canada, the Farhan Ahktar directed hit averaged a stellar $12,566 per theater which nearly matched the $12,794 average of the number one film in America, Tom Cruise’s own action sequel Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Don 2 continues to see strong weekday crowds and is on track to become one of the top five all-time Bollywood blockbusters in North American box office history.
Looks like Don is on his way to super-hit status and is King of the box office again.
