With Fashion all the rage at the moment, following both the success of the Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut, Mughda Godse movie and the rapid growth of the industry in India – now the fourth biggest fashion industry in the world, we’re likely to see Bollywood artists increasingly involved in crossovers with the industry – as we saw recently at the Lakme Fashion Week. I predict it won’t be long before some Bollywood stars are sponsoring their own fashion lines and houses.
Top Bollywood choreographer and director Farah Khan has also taken the plunge by coordinating the Triumph lingerie fashion show in Mumbai. It was Farah’s first venture into fashion shows for twenty years. “I used to choreograph fashion shows some 18-20 years ago but that was at college level,” she explains. “So I thought it would be a nice change. This show is really pulling out the stocks, I think it could probably be the costliest show ever held in India.”
A number of the Bollywood fashionista were present including Karan Johar, Preity Zinta and Sushmita Sen. “We wish that India would have more shows like this and I wish that Farah Khan would direct more of these because she is so flamboyant,” said Sushmita.
Farah of course is feted for her magnificent direction of Om Shanti Om and she also did the choreography in Karan Johar’s Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, as well as the Anglo-Indian movies Monsoon Wedding and Vanity Fair. She recently conducted a masterclass on Bollywood in London. Perhaps most important of all, however – she gave birth to triplets in February of this year – son Czar and daughters Diva and Anya.
