16jun_gadar15 years ago to the date, history was made in Bollywood with the release of the political drama Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. On June 15, 2001 the Sunny Deol – Amisha Patel starrer was released and the fan frenzy of the film surpassed everyone’s expectations.

This film, based on the India-Pakistan partition, went on to become a cult film in Bollywood. Gadar not only opened to an unprecedented response but eventually created hysteria nationwide! But truth be told, it was not a smooth ride for makers of the movie as at one point distributors had refused to pay the quoted amount for the film’s distribution. However after a lot of struggle the movie’s high on emotion storyline coupled with Sunny Deol’s spine chilling performance made this movie a runaway hit at the box office. Gadar became the highest grossing film of all time even breaking the long held records of Hum Aapke Hain Kaun.

Not just the numbers, this film moved audiences to the core. The theatres erupted with anger and joy along with Sunny’s character in the movie. The tension and emotion was palpable whenever the movie was screened. Those who witnessed the atmosphere inside the theatre have confessed that the feeling cannot be replicated ever again!

Here’s to celebrating 15 glorious years of Gadar!
