There is no force more powerful than a mother’s love, and no journey more relentless than the one she undertakes to protect her child. This September 3, Netflix brings audiences Gandhari – an emotionally charged action-thriller led by Taapsee Pannu that explores the extraordinary lengths one woman will go to when everything she loves is at stake.
Set against the atmospheric backdrop of a fictitious town Joypurra, Gandhari is a story of unwavering belief, quiet resilience and unflinching courage. At its heart lies Bani, a mother whose devotion is tested at every turn, compelling her to confront unimaginable challenges with conviction and sacrifice. Marking one of Taapsee Pannu’s most physically demanding roles yet, the film combines extensive action with a deeply human core.
Written and produced by Kanika Dhillon and directed by Devashish Makhija, Gandhari brings together an acclaimed ensemble cast featuring Ishwak Singh, Chhaya Kadam, Swastika Mukherjee, Mita Vashisht and Jatin Sarna, who bring the intensity and emotional complexity to Bani’s journey. As she gets closer to finding her daughter, Bani finds herself navigating a dangerous world where every encounter holds a new threat, and the ensemble adds to the tension and unpredictability of her relentless pursuit.
The film also reunites Netflix with Kanika Dhillon and Taapsee Pannu following the success of Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba.
Taapsee earlier shared, “With Gandhari, we’re venturing into new emotional depths, and I’m thrilled to explore this intense character. I did action 9 years ago, and I’ve been waiting for a script that would bring me back to it and challenge me in new ways. After playing a spy, I was searching for something deeper, and Gandhari, with its powerful story of a mother driven by revenge, felt like the perfect fit.”
Kanika Dhillon, Writer & Producer, said, “With Gandhari, we wanted to tell the story of a woman who refuses to be defined by her circumstances. Bani’s journey is raw, relentless and deeply personal, and that is what drew me to her from the very beginning. Reuniting with Taapsee once again has been incredibly special — there is a deep creative trust and understanding that we have built over the years, and watching her bring Bani to life with such commitment and intensity was truly rewarding. Collaborating with Devashish and an exceptional cast made this journey all the more fulfilling. Our partnership with Netflix has once again given us the opportunity to bring this story to life on the scale and canvas it deserves, and I’m incredibly excited for audiences to discover Gandhari on September 3.”
Ruchikaa Kapoor Sheikh, Director, Original Films, Netflix India, shared, “Gandhari is a bold, emotionally charged action thriller that turns a mother’s love into a force- fierce, instinctive and impossible to ignore. We are delighted to reunite with Taapsee Pannu and Kanika Dhillon, building on a creative partnership we deeply value and carrying it into a strikingly different space with Devashish Makhija at the helm. It has been a rewarding year so far for us at Netflix, and with Gandhari we strive to continue to focus on telling rooted, authentic and entertaining stories.”
Brimming with intense action, powerful performances and a story that holds nothing back, Gandhari premieres September 3, only on Netflix.
