Starring acclaimed Indian actor Shashank Arora, GETAR HERO transforms the mythology of the American cowboy inside the chaos, color, and relentless energy of Mumbai. Following its acclaimed premiere at Tribeca Film Festival, the short has now qualified for the 99th Academy Awards®.
From the filmmaking duo Sneddy, the creative partnership of Teddy Stern and Sneha Mehta, GETAR HERO is a visually striking and emotionally charged film that reimagines the classic Western through the lens of modern-day Mumbai.
The story follows a down-on-his-luck cowboy who arrives in Bombay only to discover his guitar and wallet have been stolen. With his future hanging by a thread, he plunges into the city’s neon-lit streets in a desperate race to recover what he has lost.
Starring internationally acclaimed Indian actor Shashank Arora (Superboys of Malegaon, Made in Heaven, Titli), alongside Manoj Sharma and Rajesh Balwani, the film uses the visual language and mythology of the Western and blends it with the musicality of Bollywood cinema.
“What is a Western without the West?” ask the filmmakers. “Getar Hero reimagines the cowboy myth through the lens of Mumbai, where survival depends less on rugged individualism and more on collective endurance; less on independence, and more on interdependence.”
Directed by Teddy Stern, produced by Sneha Mehta, and written by both (as Sneddy), the film grew out of a deeply personal period of reflection on masculinity, identity, and performance.
“I was thinking a lot about what it means to be a man,” says Stern. “So, we put a cowboy in Mumbai. He’s not a traditional hero. He’s a guy in the wrong movie, wearing the wrong outfit, trying to survive.”
Sneddy has spent more than a decade creating branded and narrative work across the United States and India, including Destination: Bollywood (the first Indian reality competition series in North America) for Hulu and commercial work with Bollywood superstar Ranbir Kapoor.
We here at BollySpice loved the film so check out the review here. We also had a fabulous chat with Sneddy about the film so, check that out too!
